Outlook / Notes Killer? So is there really no F/OSS Outlook or Lotus Notes clone? I know
there's a couple of web based projects but haven't seen a native app out there. Anybody know of one? Sounds like a good way for a couple of python programmers to not have to find real jobs. Thoughts? I just saw on slashdot that notes is cross platform now for $100 a seat. Seems high to me. - Eric C. the one who only wants to play for a living. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

It depends on if you're just talking about a mail client with an address book and calendar, or if you are talking about sharing that address book and calendar with a group of people. Evolution or Thunderbird+Sunbird will do the first part. They can do the second part if you have the right backend bits, but it was not very usable when I looked a few years back. If it's the second bit you're asking about, the question is really what is the F/OSS replacement for Exchange/Lotus Domino. -b -- copyright infringement is your best entertainment value. <_generation x_> -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

I recall using Kontact and all the related applications back on SuSE 9 at one point for a similar task. There are many options, with various features, in various stages of maturity. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_collaborative_software Kolab is mature and offers a good collaboration platform and we plan to implement it at work. http://www.kolab.org/ -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list Discuss@... http://lists.blu.org/mailman/listinfo/discuss |

It's working out great for them. Not only can they share their calendars if so desired, they can also access their calendars from off site (on their home computers, laptops etc...) quite easily as well. The only problem with this setup is that when using the Google extension, the "tasks" function is unavailable. It's been up and running for a while now and seems very stable for them. As an aside, they are using Ubuntu 7.10 on all of their desktops (6) and (1) laptop with Crossover Linux running IE6 for a very few required state websites that are Internet Explorer only. Their server is currently running OpenSUSE (soon to be Ubuntu 8.04 LTS).
