OpenSUSE 11.0 locks upI've been trying to install OpenSUSE 11.0 on my ThinkPad R31 model
2656-6FU and have noticed it frequently locks up solid, requiring a power down to reboot. Has anyone else experienced this? This computer worked fine 10.3 and earlier versions. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- The linux-thinkpad mailing list home page is at: http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/mailman/listinfo/linux-thinkpad |

I just switched from Debian to Ubuntu on my X60, including a kernel upgrade from 2.6.22 to 2.6.25, and started seeing lockups exactly like you describe. Of course there are lots of ways for the kernel to freeze so it's hard to say if we're running into the same bug or not, but it's possible there's something nasty hiding in the latest upstream kernel that these new distros are just picking up on... (I've so far only see lockups while the ethernet port was in use -- how about you?) -- Nathaniel -- Electrons find their paths in subtle ways. -- The linux-thinkpad mailing list home page is at: http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/mailman/listinfo/linux-thinkpad |

Re: OpenSUSE 11.0 locks upHi
i think i may have experienced a similar thing (Nathaniel's mention of the networking thing prompted me) on my T61. i run debian testing with a custom vanilla kernel - its happened since 2.6.22.x kernels i think. (i also think i've reported this on this list to no avail some months ago). i currently have 2.6.25.7. this has happened a fair bit in the past. at times when i expect it to happen, i have switched to a terminal and the most consistent part of the dump has been around the following: smp.c:209 thats about all i have. after experimenting though, i have found that having the wireless on with a network cable also plugged in was a sure way to replicate the problem. this doesn't happen everywhere but ALWAYS from home where my machine recognises my access point (this is the only 'guess' of what might be happening that i can come up with). it just dies. the other thing i notice is the caps-lock button flashing. i have no solution except to set the wireless switch to off when connected via cable from noticed trouble spots. Re: OpenSUSE 11.0 locks upI use both distros at the production level. I prefer Debian but like
suse. The only reason I mention Debian and Ubuntu is that they tend to be more compatible with newer/Laptop hardware IMO. If you really want to show off, you do it with gentoo stage one or slackware and forget the package management altogether. Its all the same kernel. Chris.. I can't recall any frequent lockups on openSUSE for a very long time. 11.0 works flawlessly here on two Thinkpads (T42 and T61), using the "-default" kernel. I have 11.0 running on a A30 - works fine. except the Netgear WG511 WLAN card was a pain, as SuSE did not deliver the firmware drivers (ubuntu did!) After I had the firmware installed, WPA encryption works. Hibernate and Suspend works, when using the "nv" video driver. The binary-only "nvidia" driver does cause the system to freeze upon resume (black screen). I don't use any of the cards above.
