Hello,
i'm trying to develop an external application that uses the Open X-Change HTTP-API. For first, i want to list the root-directories of a user like this:

http://localhost/ajax/login?action=login&name=MyUser&password=MyPass

=> JSON result: {"session":"f70ad4bd50295a60e5f8b4b0ca175146","random":"1218643885724"}

Does anybody know where's the failure? Do i understand the "OX-HE-Authentication-Sessionhandling.pdf" right or is
that a wrong way to use the HTTP API?
> Here is the relevant section of the logs:

well, this just says what you already know: that PAM and saslauthd
cannot talk to slapd on localhost. what it does not say, is why,
because you're looking at the wrong logfile.

if you want to know why slapd is not running (or crashing) you'd need
to look at it's logfile, usually something like /var/log/slapd. if
that does not exist and you can't find any lines containing the string
'slapd' in any other file in /var/log, you'd possibly need to enable
slapd logging, e.g. by adding this line to /etc/syslog.conf:
local4.* -/var/log/slapd
then create the logfile (`touch /var/log/slapd` as root) and then
reload the syslog service.

for this to work you'd also have to make sure /etc/openldap/slapd.conf
does *not* contain a line with "loglevel 0" (the default is 256, which
should be fine, so if there is no line with 'loglevel' you're good as
well). for more on logging see `man slapd.conf`.

note that none of this is really specific to OX and just plain
sysadmin work and LDAP diagnostics. once you have a log file and there
is stuff written to it, you're likely to see some bdb errors which you
then could ask at the openldap-software mailing list about (be sure to
google for the error message first). be prepared for them to tell you
to read the bdb documentation ;)

> We are using OX5 build 5637 (hymalia) on a SLES9 box.

If you still have a valid support contract for this (and this still is
a supported release) forget everything I said above and get the
support you've paid for, from the vendor (Open-Xchange Inc.).
See http://www.open-xchange.com/en/services/support

best regards,

Recently, we've started to see frequent out of memory errors in Tomcat --
> * which IMAP server is suggested? Currently, (with a commercial OX5
> install) I'm on cyrus, and while it works I'm personally not that happy
> with it (needs too much babysitting, backup/restore is a pain.) Is one of
> the others good enough to replace it? courier? dovecot? (Most important
> integration with OX is obviously also important.)

I think there was mention of Cyrus and Dovecot in the wiki but I can't
be bothered to look it up right now.

Also with these requirements (IMAP ACLs, Sieve support) I guess only
Cyrus will play (Dovecot might partially work, with the
http://wiki.dovecot.org/ACL and http://wiki.dovecot.org/LDA/Sieve
plugins), but I can't be sure since the Courier page only has this on
supported features (the courier wiki is even worse):

"* Courier-IMAP implements many popular IMAP protocol extensions that
provide value-added functionality with most popular IMAP clients. "

So pick the one which has the features you need, in the colour you

Hi,

I recently discovere the OX6 Debian packaging -- great!

Questions:
* the default install (as per the wiki walkthrough) runs on MySQL. Is
PostgreSQL still supported?

* which IMAP server is suggested? Currently, (with a commercial OX5
integration with OX is obviously also important.)

* Data migration: Any documentation around on how to move our existing
database (OX5, PostgreSQL and user database in LDAP) to the new set up (I'd
expect the schema has changed...)

* SyncML: we currently sync (very buggy, though :-( to several Treo 650
and Nokia E61. How far is SyncML (free or commercial) support for OX6?

thanks in advance
> It's not possible to search in our mailinglists, but you can search in our
> forums:

Well, there's google or gmane (and possibly others):

http://www.google.com/search?q=%2Bsite%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.open-xchange.org%2Fpipermail%2Fuser%2F

http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.cms.open-xchange.user/

Also you could download mailman's archives from
http://www.open-xchange.org/pipermail/user/
and read them locally or move them to some IMAP server.
But it's probably not worth the hassle.

@Christian:
There's not too much relevant stuff (e.g. with regard to recent OX
versions/Hyperion) in these archives anyway.

I've received a recent complaint from a user regarding the font size "very small" for
emails, but not for the inbox list which is in normal size. When he
changes to normal size under options - preferences - layout, it changes
for that session when he redisplays an email, but reverts next session. He
also notes that if he goes back to options - preferences - layout during the
same session, it has not remembered his setting - going back to "very small".

I am using OX5 SP4 on SLES9.

Any ideas? Is there anything I can tweak in the server settings?
> Hy, i was making some tests around a replicated OX with slony.
> All work just fine, except for one thing, after many test my replica
> database get corrupted, it's there any way to re sync databases
> without re generating all the data..

Having no idea what slony is all about I guess this is nothing OX can
help you with. OX has no function for database replication so this is
probably a question to the slony folks?
> > >
> > > Are Hyperion and Hymalia both GPL or just Hyperion? If so, is there
> > > source for both?
> >
> > as long as i know,
> >
> > short response: both are not full GPL
>
> Exactly.
>
> > long response: historically hymalia was only GPL but it seems some parts are
> > now CC-ed (creative commons) in the frontend. hyperion is dual GPL/CC from
> > the beginning
>
> Exactly.
>
> > > From what I have read it looks like Hyperion is GPL and scales better
> > > than Hymalia.
>
> > since hyperion is for the hosting market it's supposed to be "lightweight",
> > and it's. but the architecture is not as modular (at least in the current
> > version) as the "old" hymalia (fewer components & more integration, no more
> > standalone tomcat, no more ldap, ....)
>
> The architecture of hyperion much more modular like hymalia. The fact, that
> there's currenlty no ldap integration does not mean, that it is not modular.
>
> You cannot say something is not modular, just because it is missing modules!

okay, this is why I added "at least in the current version" in my comment.
from a "real world" pov, missing modules or no modularity is quite the same. but i agree, in the long run the plateform of
OX6 is going to be much better than the old ones. but hey, this is not for the next week.

> There's currently a lot of components and examples on the way for hyperion.
> The server is not completely modular (in the development HEAD) and the
> admin/provisioning part already is (in the current stable branch).
> We are using OSGi to achieve this modularity. Hymalia does not have any such
> modularity at all - except for the gui, which allows to integrate own web
> modules -. With Hyperion, not only the server is modular.
>
> The current Hyperion stable gui has support for Netvibes UWA
> (http://www.open-xchange.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hyperion_UWA).
>
> The next generation is going to have even more features like themability.
>
> http://www.open-xchange.com/wiki/indexphp?title=Gui_Theming_Description
believe me, i'm WAY more enthousiast with your new release than with the old ox5. in many aspects
(simplicity, focus on web UI, stability, ...). I just say that now it's a work in progress for the modularity part.

for the backend (mysql, ox engine), it will probably scale as the web server load balancer and mysql database do ( but i don't have
experiences in very big deploiement) but the problem we are facing with our current customers is the bandwith needed to download all the gui files.
this is why i made such comment about the gui/badwith. Even if the backend is going well with 5K users, real worl deploiement is more like
"50 users doing their logon sequence at 09 AM from their house" and THAT will kill your SDSL 2Mbits for some minutes.

do you have something on the way to reduce this or any advices ?
> standalone tomcat, no more ldap, ....)

The architecture of hyperion much more modular like hymalia. The fact, that
there's currenlty no ldap integration does not mean, that it is not modular.

You cannot say something is not modular, just because it is missing modules!

The next generation is going to have even more features like themability.

http://www.open-xchange.com/wiki/index.php?title=Gui_Theming_Description

> and as such it will probably be more complex to scale it well to very big
> deploiement (perhaps more than 1000 users), but the backend performs well
> for 100+ users and the frontend is just a matter of bandwith.

1000 concurrent is of course way below what Hyperion was designed for.

See
> So, as I read this, OX may not be installed on a private corp website
> by an IT consultant without paying for the full version.
I'm working in a company, installing OX6 in the context of IT services/consultancy.

That was a question i asked before going this way to OX guys and in this context (providing consultancy services around OX) is considered "no commercial" by them.

extract from: http://www.open-xchange.com/header/community_area/community_ip_licenses.html

"""
IMPORTANT: The definition of 'Noncommercial' is still being debated and defined within the Creative Commons community.
Open-Xchange interprets Noncommercial to mean all INTERNAL individual, not-for-profit and for-profit use. EXTERNAL individual,
not-for-profit and for-profit use such a resale, rent and lease as well as inclusion of the digital content in an advertising model is
considered COMMERCIAL use and prohibited under our interpretation of the license. We view the performance of professional services as a
NONCOMMERCIAL INTERNAL use of the digital content and it is allowed. For additional information, please visit our Creative Commons FAQ.
""""

the important point is here:
>
> Are Hyperion and Hymalia both GPL or just Hyperion? If so, is there source
> for both?

Hymalia is the base for the OX5 product, which is in maintenance-only mode
now.

Hyperion is the successor of Hymalia and the base of our current products (OX
HE, OX EE) and of course it is also what we call our Community Edition.

Unlike with OX5, almost the complete code is licensed under GPL.

The exception, the web gui is licensed under
Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 Generic.
That's the same license, that is also used by the http://www.opensource.org/
homepage.
The reason for this license is, that we developed this gui together with our
customers and partners, who did quite some investments into it. Even though
they payed us to develop the code, we are still able to open the source to the
public, just with the "limitation" of the CC license, see

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/

You are free:

to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work

to Remix — to adapt the work

Under the following conditions:

Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the
author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse
you or your use of the work).

      Attribute this work:
What does "Attribute this work" mean?
The page you came from contained embedded licensing metadata, including
how the creator wishes to be attributed for re-use. You can use the HTML
here to cite the work. Doing so will also include metadata on your page
so that others can find the original work as well.

Noncommercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.

Share Alike. If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may
distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to
      this one.

> From what I have read it looks like Hyperion is GPL and scales better than
> Hymalia.

Exactly.

> My goal is to install everything from source but I only want a fully GPL'ed
> version.

What is your reason to insist on GPL?

--
since hyperion is for the hosting market it's supposed to be "lightweight", and it's. but the architecture is not as modular (at least in the current version) as
the "old" hymalia (fewer components & more integration, no more standalone tomcat, no more ldap, ....) and as such it will probably be more complex
to scale it well to very big deploiement (perhaps more than 1000 users), but the backend performs well for 100+ users and the frontend is just a matter of bandwith.

i will be interested if someone has more informations on how well these scale in real world (and big) deploiement.

Hello,

to whom it may concern, I developed a web-based application to find and
remove duplicated appointments in Open-Xchange. We are using it since
last year and it works like a charm. I decided to release it as open
source, because someone of you might be assailed by duplicates as well
and is looking for an easy solution to get rid of them.

Here is short description:

- ---------
DRFOX (Duplicate Remover For Open-Xchange) is web-based application,
which provides an opportunity to find and remove duplicated appointments
in Open-Xchange™ which primarily caused by misapplication or failures
during the synchronization process with fat clients like Microsoft
Outlook or Palm Desktop. Hence DRFOX ensures that the duplicates will
also be removed in these fat clients and connected mobile devices as well.
Every user of the groupware is able to login to DRFOX, however they will
be distinguished between user and administrator. A user is only able to
remove duplicates in his own and shared calendars. In the case of shared
calendars the user has either restricted or unrestricted rights like
specified in Open-Xchange. Administrators are in addition able to search
for users and remove their duplicates, whereas they will not have any
restrictions.

DRFOX has been tested on Open-Xchange server versions ranging from
0.8.0-6 to 0.8.2 but it should work on versions up to current 0.8.8-0 as
well.
(Please drop me an email, if it works properly on 0.8.8-0.)

DRFOX does not work on Express Editon and Hosting Edtion, it is
considered to work on Community Edition / OX Server 5 based releases only.
- ---------

You can download DRFOX at http://sourceforge.net/projects/drfox/

Regards,

Migrating from OSS Version 0.8.2.1-1 to commercial OX5?

Hi,

we have a customer who is currently running the open source version of
OX, and will probably want to switch to the commercial version (outlook
connector, plus access to support if needed, as well as supported
upgrades etc.) - is there anything that I would need to watch out for
when migrating their data? I guess the main points are:

- LDAP schema
- PostGreSQL schema
- Cyrus & its data structures

Any caveats here?

Tnx, -garry
