> I was called into the Personnel Directors' office today and
> told I was being let go after 21 years with my company. Looks
> like I'll be diving into my closets and drawers to unload a
> bunch of OM gear. I don't think it will fetch very high
> not to have really perused your Photowalk pics to a degree to
> comment on them. We had one here in Louisville also. I posted
cheap and popular. Excellent weed control at around 100mm/4" depth as
it forms a 'wet pack' on the soil surface. Reduces the need for
watering too. Most popular are strongly coloured types like large red
gum chips which take a long time to rot. Softwoods are a little
acidic except for paths. Rough eucalypt mulch works well but has to
be replaced annually. It feed the soil but some nitrogen supplement
is required to balance the decomposition.
<I know arborists around here get quite a hefty fee for any tree
<felling/removal. First hand, I know.

In this part of NW England there is certainly a trade in wood
chippings made from felled trees or the results of pruning. Getting
a big pine pruned/shaped last year cost us and our neighbours real
money but the leader of the team of arboriculturists spent much of
his time on his mobile/cell phone buying and selling
chips. Everything cut off (up to about 6 inch diameter) from 'our'
tree went into his industrial scale chipper and the output was blown
into his lorry. Apparently the market for high quality sorted wood
> Got rid of an old rotten center cedar near the house this summer. $400
> and we cleaned up the mess. Nothing of value in the logs so I'll use it
> for firewood when we need a quick hot fire to take the chill off, like
> this morning.
>
> Working height of the bucket is only 65' so the top 20' came down in one
> piece. No picture as I was working the rope. The rest came down in short
> sections.
> This is how I feel about most of the HDR images I see. Very few people
> are able to just use the effect to subtly widen the dynamic range.
> Most go way overboard, and the images scream: look, I am good at
They're built from about 8 exposures 1 stop apart. I think they're
pretty close to what I could see with my eye but the camera couldn't.
On exposures where the sky showed a modest amount of color the
foreground was almost completely black. When the foreground had some
detail the sky was completely blown.

I like the way PhotoShop HDR works now that I understand it. The
resultant 32 bit image has so much range that you can only view it in
brightness "slices" since there's no way for the monitor to reproduce it
let alone a print.
I agree with Moose that the earliest 4T bodies were champagne, they were
intended for the US market. Champagne bodies marked 4Ti might be early
non-US market models, or might be later models from any market. I can't
comment on the relative wear characteristics of champagne and black
versions, but I can say from experience that it's mighty hard to get paint
to adhere to titanium. I suspect that the 3Ti (I have never seen a
bad-looking 3Ti) did not use paint, but powder coating.

As to serial numbers, you have to take care, as the base plates are so
easily switched between bodies, so the base plate from a late model
champagne 4Ti could find its way onto an early 4T body. Equally, the body
outer panels were available as parts, so a 4T(i) of any vintage could find
itself with a new identity. If the serial number begins with a "2", I would
suspect the base plate is such a replacement part.

The restorative effect of a re-body can be impressive. For example, compare
<www.hemy.me.uk/Miscellany/Before.jpg> with
<www.hemy.me.uk/Miscellany/After.jpg>

A better indicator of the age of a 4T body is the small painted code inside
the cassette chamber, which indicates the assembly plant and month (if
memory serves). Now, where did I put the decoding table....
> Of the four I have, the Champagne has the highest serial number. I realize
that might not mean anything, but it is a data point to the contrary.
>
Sorry if I am wrong. I was under the impression that the champagne bodies
were the earliest. Also, the eSIF says "Currently the OM-4Ti is only
available in black. Originally it was made in 'champagne' (which was not a
chrome finish or bare titanium, but painted titanium)."
>
>> - The color is a paint that doesn't adhere to the titanium as well as the
black paint on an OM-4. The black on OM-4Ti also isn't as robust as the old
paint on brass, but better than the champagne, which chips and flakes too
easily.
>>
>
> My champagne has had the most use and looks the best of the four I have.
In my opinion, the champagne finish holds up better than the black.
>
Again, based on what I've heard and seen. When I was looking for a 4T(i), it
seemed all the champagne bodies on the 'Bay had serious paint issues. As I
recall, I picked up the same idea from posts here back then. The only one I
have is black, and the paint doesn't seem to be as tough as the black on
brass of the OM-4.
> http://www.olympus.co.jp/jp/fun/wallpaper/camera/dl.cfm?id=117&type_id=4&la=en <http://www.olympus.co.jp/jp/fun/wallpaper/camera/dl.cfm?id=117&type_id=4&la=en>
>
Nice catch!
> It shows the wideangle lenses that were available for our beloved OMs back in the good ol' days,
That depends on when the good old days were. The F2 wide angles, 50/2
and 90/2 macros and 100/2 are all relatively late lenses, from the
perspective of one who started with an OM-1 in about 1974. They all have
55mm filter threads.

All the original lenses except the 50/1.4 were slower, smaller, lighter
and almost all with 49mm threads.
> Of the four I have, the Champagne has the highest serial number. I realize that might not mean anything, but it is a data point to the contrary.
>
Sorry if I am wrong. I was under the impression that the champagne
bodies were the earliest. Also, the eSIF says "Currently the OM-4Ti is
only available in black. Originally it was made in 'champagne' (which
was not a chrome finish or bare titanium, but painted titanium)."
>
>> - The color is a paint that doesn't adhere to the titanium as well as the black paint on an OM-4. The black on OM-4Ti also isn't as robust as the old paint on brass, but better than the champagne, which chips and flakes too easily.
>>
>
> My champagne has had the most use and looks the best of the four I have. In my opinion, the champagne finish holds up better than the black.
>
Again, based on what I've heard and seen. When I was looking for a
4T(i), it seemed all the champagne bodies on the 'Bay had serious paint
issues. As I recall, I picked up the same idea from posts here back
then. The only one I have is black, and the paint doesn't seem to be as
tough as the black on brass of the OM-4.
> Onderwerp: [OM] Opinion and shameless plug
>
>
>
> Having a little change jangling in my pocket and being in
> Chicago, I made it to Calumet Photo. There, I managed to
> score an FS2 Grid Screen and a replacement eyecup for my E-1.
> The eyecup is somewhat an improvement over the stock one,
> but the grid screen was the big deal for me.
>
> Now, please understand that I'm one to like my finder screens
> to be totally blank with nothing on them--no lines,
> focus-aids, etc. So why did I buy the grid screen?
>
> Crooked horizons.
>
> This has been my reoccuring curse with the 4/3 format.
> Without the longer image base, I find it harder to keep my
> horizons level. Much harder. Too the point where I've
> almost chucked my camera over a bridge more than once. Well,
> maybe the grid will help, eh?
>
> I'm quite pleased with the grid screen. The lines are finely
> etched and honestly are not nearly as interruptive as I
> thought they would be. Quite bearable, really.
>
> Anyway, to the shameless plug: They still have a few more in
> stock and the price was something like $27. If you could,
> please visit www.zone-10.comand click on the advertisement
> for Calumet. The commission ain't much, but every dime is
> helpful. Thank you.

Hi list,

I was just browsing the wonderful Olympus wallpapers set available on the
olympus.co.jp site, when something strange caught my attention in this pic:

[
http://www.olympus.co.jp/jp/fun/wallpaper/camera/dl.cfm?id=117&type_id=4&la=en]

It shows the wideangle lenses that were available for our beloved OMs back
in the good ol' days, all of them well known BUT ONE.

Take a look at the lens in the middle of the bottom row: it is supposed to
be a 35mm f/2 as you can read on its front ring, but indeed it has not the
shape and size we are used to, as the front barrel is smaller and
differently shaped from the common one, and it seems to have a 49mm filter
size, too.

Its serial number reads (if my eyes can judge correctly) 10000x (maybe x=5?)
although it's not a silver nosed, so it seems to be one of the very first
coming out of its respective production run.

At first I thought it was a photoshopped image based on the 35mm f/2.8 shown
elsewhere, although I can't imagine that the guys at Olympus didn't have a
35mm f/2 in hand when shooting the pic, but a closer inspection at what can
be seen inside the lens shows it to be different from its f/2.8 counterpart
and indeed reminding of the *real* 35mm f/2.

Maybe another forgotten lens prototype in the same line as the 24-40mm f/4
that surfaced months ago.

Surely someone will soon put one of them for sale on evilbay... :)

Thought this should sound interesting for some of you folks in here!

Ciao,

Fabio
