>> Hi Robert and thanks.
>>
>> Actually I already had a quick look around magnifiers code and need to
>> explore it's features more. One thought is as it's pascal source it is
>> not an ideal base.
>>
>> The real need is to know how hard it is to implement a good solution.
>> Zoom Text thinks it is hardwork but they are the leader and it's paid
>> for product so has to be 'perfect'. Look for Zoom text on
>> http://projectcerbera.com/blog/2008/05/sight-city#day07
>>
>> > a few months back Simon Judge has had this idea which you may find
>> > inspirational also
>> >
>> > http://www.oatsoft.org/Forge/development-ideas/post200805299332729915
>>
> No, but I heard a talk by a Microsoft Accessibility bloke who implies that
> Vista/UI Automation should make it trivial... He could have been, er,
> constructively truthful though....

hmm, well it lets you track the user focus and UI state for those
programs that play ball and expose themselves (hehe).
You still need to magnify the screen unless you provide another
non-literal representation which might work (hmm again).

> How about the NVDA guys?

As Mick and James have no sight at all they felt unable to manage such
a project and NVDA doesn't use a screen buffer so they didn't really
think they could help much
To: accessibility@...

Accessibility 2.0: a million flowers bloom

Download the podcasts, transcripts and summaries of Accessibility 2.0
presentations!

Many thanks to all our contributors and everyone who attended the event.

We finally have the podcasts of the conference fully transcribed! With
approximately seven hours of footage it's taken quite a while for our
busy team to prepare – but as I'm sure you'd agree we didn't want them
to go up without being fully accessible.

You can also subscribe direct to the podcasts with this link -
http://www.abilitynet.org.uk/feeds/rss_accessibility2.xml

What's happened since the conference

Bringing together passionate experts in a field where there are few
cut and dry rules can lead to heated discussion. Since the conference
has led to several interesting developments:

A heated exchange between Jeremy Keith and Mike Isofarro Davies has
resulted in ongoing debate about the accessibility of Microformats,
hopefully it will lead to an accessible solution
What are the accessibility concerns with microformats? the BBC's
Jonathan Hassel explains
Christian Heilmann developed EasyYouTube, a YouTube player for people
with learning disabilities as a direct response to Antonia Hyde's
presentation on Rich Media for people with learning disabilities
Christian gets fantastic feedback - EasyYouTube also works with screen
readers and schoolkids use it to access YouTube
Following on from this success Chris developed EasySlideShare and EasyFlickr
Christian has taken the idea further by organising Scripting Enabled -
an accessibility hack day

We plan to host Accessibility 2.0 again in Spring 2009. Please email
us at accessibility@... if you would like to receive
updates.

Thanks, Robin.

Someone might not join the IRC meeting. I'm happy about talking the
meeting minutes to share with you. If I miss something important, you
can correct me.

Jeff

Attendee: WillieWalker, FlaPer87, frafu, slee, daviddb, JeffCai etc.

FlaPer87 introduced the current state of MourseTrap.

- With a lot of code refactoring, MouseTrap can reduce its CPU usage
about a 80%. (OpenCV framework)

- Three Main Movement Methods
Screen Method：http://mousetrap.flaper87.org/trac/wiki/ScreenMethod
Hold Method: http://mousetrap.flaper87.org/trac/wiki/Hold_Method
Drag and Drop Method: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaod5Llh-iE

The scripting handler was created to allow others to express their
imagination and create the methods as they would like:
http://mousetrap.flaper87.org/trac/wiki/CreateMapperProfile

- Willie can only try one mode in the preferences. He ends up with
"Attribute Error: 'module' object has no attribute 'reqMovement'. This
is a bug.

- FlaPer87 said OLPC (One laptop per child) was interested in MouseTrap.

- FlaPer87 suggested that Screen Method could be used combining with
other A11Y applications， but Will said it was too sensitive.

Although Firefox works to integrate with system themes, there are
sometimes issues. Occasionally, UI elements may not me readable when a
reverse color theme is used.

Here's an example: if a foreground or text color of black is hardcoded
into a theme, and the background color adapts to a white on black, the
element will end up as black on black.

Mozilla needs someone to go through these bugs and prioritize them. It
would of course be great to get fixes as well, but the bottom line is if
prioritization is done we can push for fixes from the front end team.

Are there any volunteers willing to go through the bugs and help with
triage?

Here's the meta bug -- all the individual bugs are listed as
dependencies in it:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=343205

If you're interested but need more guidance, feel free to ask. We're

Hi Tom, thanks for that and I've passed you comments on to the GNOME
(Linux desktop) developers working in this area so they know there are
users just waiting for a low cost usable solution.

The action is picking up in this area, with MouseTrap being worked on
for Head Tracking with webcams and ultimately eyegaze. A headpointer
user is working hard to ensure alternative pointer devices are fully
supported (e.g dwell click). GOK, the on screen keyboard now has
another maintainer so we can hope to see inprovements there too. In
addition the login system is being reworked to include accessibility
with alternative input as well as screen readers.

With your background as a electronics engineer, designer of solutions
and as a user it would be great to have your input and it's a great
chance to help create the solutions *you* want. You might like to join
the GNOME accessibility lists (low traffic and a friendly bunch). See
> expensive. I have been forced to use substandard solutions such as a
>
> Hi Andrew,
>
> Yes it's all very confusing and my decisions change from day to day.
>
> At the moment I am at a total loss as to what to do. I want to wait for
> something that works close to 100% for me but not for the expense of a
> car!
> Other people need funding for all types of things so I'd never feel
> right
> about getting funding for something like the MyTobii. But on the other
> hand
> my computer activities are getting more limited, and I guess being able
> to
> be independent and active online has been always important to me and I
> believe the eyegaze would help greatly in that way.
>
> Thanks for your input.
>
> support this often difficult process. As of now Quick Glance doesn't
> offer
> this same range of options suitable for assessing children. But as you
> suggest it is a very difficult time to make financial commitments to
> eye
> control technologies, given the range of options emerging, the range of
> prices and the knowledge that, as with all emerging technologies past
> and
> present, things are always very fluid. We are going through the same
> agonies as you are in terms of making firm recommendations to parents
> and
> schools.
>
> So good luck again and let us know what you decide to do and how you
> Hi Steve,
> Sorry for my slow reply. Last week I tried Camera Mouse
> 2008 and PcBility Mouse. Are there others out there?
>
> Yesterday I was lucky enough to have a go of EyeTech
> Digital's latest model of their Quick Glance system. It's
> much better than their last model. I'm torn to wait
> for further improvements or to buy.
>
> Cheers Jacqui
> question - does any oif this work on linux?
>
> I'm mike, 34, cerebral palsy is moderate/ i can type etc. but I am
> really interested in open source and augmentative communication as I
> cant understand the logic (in the US) of students getting dynavox
> machines but only being allowed to use them at school. I'd like to
> focus my master's degree on this subject. I'm not a coder, (scripter -
> yes, coder, no so much) but i get design stuff and see big picture
> stuff. I'm going to a summer camp with a bunch of friends who are
> non-verbal and I want to see if i can set up either my laptop (or the
> spare i was given) to run ubuntu and maybe wine and see if i can get
> some stuff working. The folks who be helping me test the stuff are
> mostly folks with severe CP, and can totallly give consent to helping
> out. Is there a methodology I should try and use, etc????
>
> much more to add but I am dealing with some horrid pain and meds are
> kinda kicking my butt at the moment.
> Hi Michael, design skills are really important too (I'll even admit
> that as a coder :-))
>
> It would be fantastic to have real users testing and giving feedback
> and I know the Linux GNOME accessibility and Mozilla accessibility
> communities would love to have you join. At GNOME in particular we
> starting to get some energy around alternative input so it would be
> fantastic to have you providing design, ideas and testing etc. I can
> point you in the right direction if you like.
>
> So I'm not quite sure of your question. Are you asking if the some of
> windows programs we mention on OATS work on wine on Linux? Or are you
> talking about the GNOME accessibility tools (Orca, MouseKeys,
> MouseTrap, GOK, Dasher and apps like FIrefox)?
> Hi Mike,
>
> Great to have you involved.
>
> As far as I know GazeTalk is windows only. It might work on Wine, it
> doesn't
> send text to other programs. I quite like it and have got the
> configuration
> program from the authors to allow (slight) fiddling with the layout...
>
> It would be good to have more input into Linux accessibility - it is
> something a few (?) of us would like to do more but are kinda tied from
> trying more by the practicalities of our jobs (i.e. schools/clients
> having
> Windows!)... Things will hopefully change though over time. I,
> personally,
> am very interested in an open, Linux or browser based, AAC system... (-
> ;
>
> Cheers.
>
> P.S. This is a good basic guide I think:
> > Hi Michael, design skills are really important too (I'll even admit
> > It would be fantastic to have real users testing and giving feedback
> > and I know the Linux GNOME accessibility and Mozilla accessibility
> > communities would love to have you join. At GNOME in particular we
> > starting to get some energy around alternative input so it would be
> > fantastic to have you providing design, ideas and testing etc. I can
> > point you in the right direction if you like.
> >
> > So I'm not quite sure of your question. Are you asking if the some of
> > windows programs we mention on OATS work on wine on Linux? Or are you
> > talking about the GNOME accessibility tools (Orca, MouseKeys,
> > MouseTrap, GOK, Dasher and apps like FIrefox)?
> >> question - does any oif this work on linux?
> >> I'm mike, 34, cerebral palsy is moderate/ i can type etc. but I am
> >> really interested in open source and augmentative communication as I
> >> cant understand the logic (in the US) of students getting dynavox
> >> machines but only being allowed to use them at school. I'd like to
> >> focus my master's degree on this subject. I'm not a coder, (scripter
> >> - yes, coder, no so much) but i get design stuff and see big picture
> >> stuff. I'm going to a summer camp with a bunch of friends who are
> >> non-verbal and I want to see if i can set up either my laptop (or
> the
> >> spare i was given) to run ubuntu and maybe wine and see if i can get
> >> some stuff working. The folks who be helping me test the stuff are
> >> mostly folks with severe CP, and can totallly give consent to
> helping
> >> out. Is there a methodology I should try and use, etc????
> >>
> >> much more to add but I am dealing with some horrid pain and meds are
> >> kinda kicking my butt at the moment.
> This seems worth cross posting...
> papi provides an application-side python wrapper to ATK and MSAA and
> so compliments pyatspi which is for AT-side.
>
> In fact I as MSAA is fairly symmetrical it might be of interest for
> ATs as well (can anyone verify that?).
>
>
> Hi,
>
> I'm sorry for spamming those three lists, but I thought this might be
> interesting for the one or other developer on those. I just released
> Papi 0.0.6, a python wrapper around ATK and (introducing with this
> release) now MSAA (IA2 will come by time, too).
>
> Papi enables developers to spend (nearly) any python application
> accessibility support without the need to install third party toolkits,
> such as PyGTK or wxWidgets.
>
> Interested developers are recommended to take a look at it. You can
> download it from [0]. As it is a more or less pure wrapper around the
> mentioned toolkits, there is nearly no documentation for now. That will
> change (hopefully) soon.
>
> A future version (possibly 0.0.7) will also contain a python wrapper
> around those toolkits, so that you just have to subclass and fill a
> handful of interfaces in order to have platform-independent
> accessibility support.

I want to wait for something that works close to 100% for me but not for the expense of a car! Other people need funding for all types of things so I'd never feel right about getting funding for something like the MyTobii. But on the other hand my computer activities are getting more limited, and I guess being able to be independent and active online has been always important to me and I believe the eyegaze would help greatly in that way.

Thanks for your input.

Jacqui

glad you got on better with the latest version of quick glance. I thought you might. As I said to you in my last email, for our client group (mainly children) Tobii remains the gold standard cos of its excellence in re-calibration options and imaginative and user -sensitive resources to support this often difficult process. As of now Quick Glance doesn't offer this same range of options suitable for assessing children. But as you suggest it is a very difficult time to make financial commitments to eye control technologies, given the range of options emerging, the range of prices and the knowledge that, as with all emerging technologies past and present, things are always very fluid. We are going through the same agonies as you are in terms of making firm recommendations to parents and schools.

So good luck again and let us know what you decide to do and how you get on subsequently.
