Nikon D3 and shaved 10.5mm -- PTGui or something else?

Hi all,

Hugin is having some difficulty stitching the "Full-frame fisheye" 6+1
that I've captured with my D3 and shaved 10.5mm. I searched the
archives, and it looks like most people who reported success are using
PTGui.

If you have a similar setup, are you using PTGui? Has anyone had
success with other applications like Hugin?

Thanks,
DR

Especially with monopod sequences I find that a shaved 10.5mm (on 5D)
usually requires some "guidance" with PTGui. Guidance in the form of
setting fov to 200 degrees and "a" to -0.17 no matter what the
initial "alignment" produced settings are and then using these as fixed
values in the Advanced optimizer. Then I optimise b, c (and roll,
pitch, yaw values), eliminate the excessive error control points, and
then when the errors get down to an average of less than one I optimise
fov and "a" as well. Or sometimes I dont bother and leave fov and "a"
fixed throughout.
If I shoot a careful calibration sequence with lots of control point
targets and let PTGui do all the optimisation then I usually get "a"
of -0.17, b and c almost zero and fov between 198 and 200 depending on
my cropping circle. But with loosely shot sequences PtGui begins by
deciding the fov is 185 or 230 or something. Usually the former. Ymmv.

Surely you can manage with less than 6 shots around.  The hfov in
portrait orientation will be around 140-150 degrees, so 3 or 4 shots
ought to be enough  There's no reason why you should not stitch the
images successfully with Hugin.  Check that the control points are well
spread along the overlaps rather than being bunched in the middle.
Assign some manually if necessary.

I don't know if it will make much difference, but the lens
type "Circular fisheye" together with a crop circle is probably
preferred.  However, whereas PTGui will use the fov of the full crop
circle (~200), Hugin will still use the fov across the width of the
image frame, the same as for a full-frame image.
