Hi Vikas,

MDR is an implementation of JMI. However, the project seems to be no
longer maintained. I'd suggest looking at the (also Java-based) EMF
framework (www.eclipse.org/emf) for a better alternative that is
supported by a vibrant community.

NB. Although it may at first appear that EMF is bound to Eclipse, the
EMF jars can be also used in plain standalone Java applications.

Good point. Well, in that case, might as well see if anyone is
interested in a migration path we've developed over at Eigenbase...

The project is called Enki, and is fairly close to a transparent
drop-in replacement for runtime usage of MDR, but based on Hibernate
for the persistence (something which was discussed on this list quite a
while back). Model-driven code generation is used to create pojos
which implement the JMI interfaces. It still depends on the original
MDR codebase for a few aspects such as XMI export/import.

Design docs are coming together here:

No sf.net release has been made yet, but the source code is available
at perforce.eigenbase.org:

Given that Sun has dropped MDR from NetBeans, it seems likely that
hosting of the Javadoc (and sources?) is living on borrowed time. (It
would be considerate of them to reply though).

How can I install MDR on NetBeans IDE 6.0.1?

I have had this problem in the past. In fact I reproduced it just now on my Mac. If I perform a CVS checkout to a local drive, the problem does NOT occur, but if I use a Firewire-attached disk, it happens
several times:

cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot rename file .new.qa_result to qa_results_old_ep.sql: No such file or directory

or it might say "cannot rename file CVS/Entries.Backup to CVS/Entries: File exists".

If you are already using a local disk, just repeat the check out command, and it will restart where it left off (or atleast it does for me).

I think it has something to do with a timing issue between the client, and server, but don't know exactly what or why ... HTH

Looks like a problem on your computer. Try to rename the file manually.
Is it possible? If not try to find out why?

I really can't help you with this. I have no idea what could be wrong on
your system. I don't use the the OS you use.

Attribute assignment validation

Hi,

I need to do some checking on some attributes i assigned to my mof
classes. For example, i have a class named Project. I created a datatype
named Date with an alias stereotype for Primitives.Long. Project has an
attribute of this type.

I want to implement something that whenever i set an attribute of type
Date, like:

ProjectClass pClass = metaPackage.getProject();
Project p = pClass.createProject();
p.setDate(1);

i can validate the value i am assigning (in this case i should raise an
exception, since 1 is not a valid date).

I know i can implement the method setDate in ProjectImpl, but i want to
know if i can generalize it to the dataType and not the attribute in the
class.

I read something about some methods:
protected void _interceptPreSet(String featureName, Object newValue) {
}
protected void _interceptPostSet(boolean fail) {
}

But i don't know if this solves my problem, in fact, i don't know how
to use this infomation at all.

Any hints?

Custom JMI implementation

Hi,
I've been reading the document on how to customize JMI implementation.
I ran the example of the ModelElement class but I'm not sure that this
will solve my initial problem.
I designed an UML metamodel in ArgoUML and then transformed it to MOF
metamodel. My resulting mof package is called ProjectPackage. I want to
add some contraint checkings to this package whenever i call the
refVerifyConstraints(boolean) method, for example, checking that every
class in my mof package has an atribute called "name".

My ProjectPackage generated jmi class is in the package
org.netbeans.jmi.project

This is how i tried to implement it, so that i can check contraints,
according to what i read in the document:

import org.netbeans.jmi.project.*;
import org.netbeans.mdr.storagemodel.*;

Where the "project" extent is where i loaded my mof metamodel, it
brings me the autogenerated JMI implementation, and never references my
class (i now this because i debugged it with some breakpoints).
Is what i am trying to do possible? Is the way i am trying to do it
wrong?

Hello,

The UML2MOF ATL transformation has a rule to translate constraints
from UML to MOF.
See: http://www.eclipse.org/m2m/atl/atlTransformations/#UML2MOF

In case this transformation does not completely fit your need, you may
improve it. This should be simpler than changing the UML2MOF tool
written in Java.

The MOF version supported by MDR does support constraints (see section
3.4.26 in the MOF 1.4 spec,
http://www.omg.org/docs/formal/02-04-03.pdf) but the NetBeans UML2MOF
transformation does not support the translation from constraints
attached to UML Classifiers to constraints attached to MOF
Classifiers. It should be possible to build such a translation but I
don't know of any existing one.

it seems you are making some MOF-metamodel of your own.
This metamodel should be expressed in MOF terms. As there was no MOF
tool available in old days to do this directly, but many UML tools were
available, uml2mof tool was developed to simplify creation of 'MOF
metamodel' in the way, that it can be designed in UML as 'UML model'
using some very restricted sub-set of UML and then this 'UML Model' can
be using 'uml2mof' converted into 'MOF metamodel'.
All UML features not 'mappable' to MOF are ignored.
I believe that 'MOF metamodel' cannot contain constraints. therefore all
constraints from UML are ignored by 'uml2mof' tool.
Check documentation for 'uml2mof' how to prepare you UML Model to be
fully convertible to MOF-metamodel.

The behavior is by design.

constraints in UML to MOF

Hi,

I'm trying to define some ocl constraints in my UML metamodel (i'm
using ArgoUML tool).
I have a relational package which contains two classes: Table and
Column and a transactional package which contains Entity and Attribute.
I want to define a constraint so that the mdr tests (when verifying
constraints) whether if the column i match to an attribute correspond to
the entity that i associated to the table. The thing is, i was able to
define some contraints, but the tool uml2mof won't recognize them when i
voncert my uml metamodel to a mof metamodel.
What am i doing wrong? Is it posible to do this? Do I need to define
stereotypes or something like that?

xmi java model from *.java

Dear all,

I am beginner in Netbeans. I want to use it to generate a xmi java model from *.java files. I found a message at the user mailing list relating to this ( http://mdr.netbeans.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=users&msgNo=3427). I got a question from it; is it mandatory develop a parsing tool?, I read Netbeans provides java parsing infraestructure.

However I don't know enough, I wrote a simple netbeans java project to manage my goal. The main class contains:

        File fakeFile = new File("Fake.java");
        FileObject fakeFO = FileUtil.createData(fakeFile);
        ClasspathInfo cpInfo = ClasspathInfo.create(fakeFO);
        JavaSource javaSource = JavaSource.create(cpInfo, fakeFO);
        XMIWriterFactory.getDefault().createXMIWriter().write(...)

But it is not successful, I got a lot of errors.

Please let me know what I did wrong, Is there any example to do this?

I had installed 5.5.1 version of Netbeans, but when I'm trying to update the MDR from netbeans alpha center, it is not connecting to the server.

Thanks John. I came to the same conclusion in the mean time. The Ant
manual warns that if you define multiple alternatives, the one that gets
chosen is indeterminate due to JVM mechanics, but I suspect they just
changed the order they search for things in between 1.6.5 and 1.7.

Since MDRAnt comprises just a handful of classes and only one of them needed

It hasn't been fixed in CVS, because that was my starting point. I'll look
into filing a bug report (although MDR appears so dead I'm not sure it'll
have any effect).

I ran into a similar problem. It turns out that the MdrTask class does
something funny: for each task type it knows about, it registers it
redundantly, e.g.:

This used to be OK before ant 1.7, but ant 1.7 gets confused when it
sees both.

I forgot to log a bug for this; I wonder if it's been fixed in CVS yet.
I didn't feel like rebuilding MDR from the latest sources (especially
since the old build we're using has been rock-solid), so I hacked it by
editing the .class file with a hex editor and renaming the createXXX
methods to kreateXXX. That "fixed" it.

Has anyone been successful in using the mdrant task with Apache Ant 1.7? It
silently fails to create output when run with Ant 1.7 either from the
command line or under Eclipse. (Eclipse 3.3 which is about to be released
is bundling Ant 1.7.)

Everything works fine with Ant 1.6.5, but I suspect that there's some
incompatibility in the Ant Task integration between 1.6.5 and 1.7. Any
clues from anyone? Or better yet, a version that works with Ant 1.7?

It seems that you are accessing "derived" attribute, marked as "derived"
in metamodel.
Derived attributes and associations must be implemented explicitely
using mechanism described on "mdr" documentation pages as "custom
implementation of methods" or under similar name.

I am trying to use MDR to create and modify Java models. I have MOF metamodel. I have generated interfaces. I loaded the metamodel into MDRepository. I have instance of model, where I can use factories to create new items in model. Hi Chris,
I have not tried your specific flavor of file from EA, but know of
problems with TaggedValue in their UML 1.3 format - which I created a
XSL stylesheet to fix.
I suspect that here the problem might be different since at UML 1.4 any
ModelElement can contain taggedValues. So the problem might be that
UML:TaggedValue is nested directly underneath an element such a Class
without an intermediate UML:ModelElement.taggedValue element
representing the association.
If you cannot send your actual model try a very basic model with Tags
saved in the same format and send me that (I don't have EA myself so
cannot try).

From experience I think you'll hit a few more problems with EA files
even once you have surmounted this one. I can probably help too having
trodden this route before in order to integrate such UML tools with my
company's own MOF-based repository.

found the issue. looks likely to be either related to an outstanding
bug I have with EA or a new one.

seems in some cases, they are dropping a UML:TaggedValue element
directly inside an UML:Association element without the
UML:ModelElement.taggedValue element.

I know for ArgoUML we don't (yet) hook the NetBeans error logger, so MDR is
going to be spitting this info out on the console. You'll need to start
ArgoUML from the command line to see it.
