Hello,

Milestone 3 of NetBeans 6.0 (Dev) is now available for download at http://qa.netbeans.org/q-builds/index_trunk.html

NetBeans 6.0 M3 contains few improvements:
* Ant output window now features Stop and Re-run buttons
* Windows Vista look and feel is fully supported if you run NetBeans 6.0 on latest available build of Java SE 6.0
* Run configurations is now avaialable also for Java SE projects.

Pictures tell you more about these features, check:  http://wiki.netbeans.info/wiki/view/NewAndNoteWorthy
Overall report for M3 is available as well http://wiki.netbeans.info/wiki/view/Milestone3Report

Are the 5.5 features moved into the 6.0 trunk yet, or
will that not happen until 5.5 release?

Wade:

The indication at NB day in Seattle was that the EE stuff in 5.5 would
not be introduced into 6.0 until after 5.5 goes gold (next month).
Nevertheless, some nice features are sneaking into the 6.0 daily
builds -- particularly, I think, if you're running a recent build of
jdk 6.

The milestone 3 doesn't include EE 5.5 functionality yet. We plan to
merge these features in Milestone 4.

are you sure that these are only features in a milestone build ?
how much milestone you will produce before netbeans 6 final version ?
we heard many thing about improvement and redesign of Netbeans 6 editor
and code completor , but at least until last milestone nothing changed
from a user point of view.
does any of those capabilities (specially speed and smartness of code
completer) has been added yet ?
for example ability that make it possible for code completer just to
show assign able items and many more ...

Thanks

Yes, these are the main new features in M3.

We don't know yet because 6.0 planning just started.

No it was not added at this moment. New Editor capabilities are being developed and stabilized on a branch and will be added soon
into NetBeans 6.0. As this will be a big change we want to make sure it is stable and all developers will be able to adopt it. This
will not happen before 5.5 is out. Other changes planned are merging Java EE 5 support into 6.0, this is going to happen also soon.

I know M3 was not the big step in a sense of new features added and we want to make better in a future.

If you mean merging Java EE 5 support this is going to happen soon, around 5.5 release time frame. Hopefully it will be in M4.

I have been playing around with the daily builds for a while now, and I do love
the new "run configuration" feature. I also like the new layout for the JUnit
output window.

One thing that I have noticed: when running NB with JDK 6 NetBeans sometimes
simply vanishes. No entry in messages.log no log file in the JDK bin directory
(which I usually see, when the JVM simply terminates).

Has anyone else seen this? I cannot reproduce it, and I'm wondering if this is a
JDK 6 problem, a NetBeans problem or a problem between the two (I have never
seen my own apps simply "vanish" with JDK 6)

Regards
Thomas

Thomas:

I've been using the 6.0 daily builds for a couple of months now on
jdk6 (64 bit) and I have never seen this phenomenon!  In fact, the
NB6.0 / jdk 6 combo is more stable than the NB5 /jdk5 combo in my
environment.

If it's a jdk problem you should be getting an error log in your home
directory with a name like hs_err_pidxxxxxx.log.  If you're not
getting any logs it's not a jdk problem probably.

Hi Chuck,

I do get an hs_err_pidxxx.log in the JDK directory. But as this *only* happens
with NB, it might well be a NB problem (most probably a combination of both).

In the meantime I filed an issue for this, just to make sure it will not be
overlooked. I guess the NB guys will forward that to the JDK guys if it turns
out to be, that it can only be fixed in the JDK

Cheers
Thomas

We had a problem like this which was eventually diagnosed as resulting
from a faulty DIMM in the machine.  All other Netbeans related crashes
either produce exception messages in the NetBeans logs or a virtual
machine error log as Chuck mentioned, in my experience.

Hi Thomas:

Well, I do get the impression that NB pushes the jdk envelope!  :)
