Cool. The new views work on every forum/list with my nice new MacBook Pro. However, the new views seem to be written such that, on Safari at least, the option to view the previous page does not work as you would normally expect to do. It seems to require a double click on the left arrow and I haven't figured out how to go the previous page using track pad gestures.

Please regard this as a request to continue to provide & maintain the old style views.

The 'new view' option gives me nothing on some lists (e.g. the Gails mailing list) except the first post in a thread. I'm using Firefox 2.0.013 on WinXP. This thread I'm posting in now works fine with new views.

It was a good call to keep the option to see old views, many thanks.

Yes, you can . In "Edit this forum", there is a tab "Customize appearance". There you can select a predefined style (color, fonts etc), or you can copy and use the predefined CSS as a base to modify it to set your own styles.

Note that if you have a website, then the easiest way to make your forum fit with your site is to embed it into your site. The help article is here: http://www.nabble.com/help/Answer.jtp?id=36

After you embed it, you can use the "Customize appearance" feature to further tweak your embedded forum appearances.

Hi there. I'm brand new to Nabble (I think I just sent this as an email to the Nabble admin; sorry about that...) and I have lots of questions. I'll just start by asking one, though: Are we able to create our own skins for our forums, rather than using the predefined skins?

We will have this feature in our next version. We expect to release the new version in about a month or sooner.

Yes, we will allow that in the next version.

But I looked your forum http://www.springfieldhomesguide.com/agent_questions.asp - seems to me, you should place the forum description (your graphical header and the html below it) into your embedding page - you can put all that html in your embedding page and place them above the nabble embedding js code. This will put the header above the Nabble block. It will look nicer, but I agree, it will be even better if you can hide the Nabble name.

Yes, but again, in the next version. We will have a lot of new things in the next version.

This will be a no for now. To do this accurately, we will have to keep track of what posts are visited by each user, which for us will amount to a lot of tracking. Do you know any forum that does this kind of precise tracking? Right now, we simply reply on the browser to change the color of the visited links. It works for people who access a forum from a main computer, but not if you have multiple computers. Sorry, we may do it in future but not now.

One other thing now that I'm thinking about it. With embedding, the "Forum Name:*" = Title can be redundant as well. Perhaps the ability to resize it, or an option to not show it.
-Edward

Thanks for the input. We will keep the current view, but we will make it simpler. We will also provide a standard phpBB/vBulltin view, just because a lot of people are used to it. We can also add another view - the view you asked in your other post. The forum owner can select a default view for his forum, and the users can select his own individual view as well. The forum view options should be available in a month or so.

With the standard phpBB view, we will also provide a link at the top to "show all threads" - this will allow users who are stuck in phpBB view to view all threads from all subforums immediately.

Good point. The two links are for the breadcrumb trail. So, if you navigate to a child forum, you will see the full bread crumb trail. But I do agree with you that the two links are redundant. Also, it seems that the links don't need to show in the top forum page.

So, how do you like the breadcrumb trail to be?

Nabble should work fine with IE7. What error did you see? Also, can you try clear cache and see if you still get the same error?

I think the designs for the second one are good for categories, but I don't think they should replace forums (well, it might be cool to have this so that all forums also had category views, and just get rid of the category/forum distinction). So, in essence, I guess maybe I do like the original new idea.

I'm not too keen on the Google groups style. I kind of like most things about the Nabble layout; mostly, I just think it needs some aesthetic adjustments (and I think the new views help for the actual posts, but the forum screen is still the same style, except for colors and such, if you change them).

The Nabble team is trying make design changes to the forum front page. We'd love to hear what you think.

Our questions are:

1. The current forum front page shows both the forum structure and the list of threads, for example, here, and here. Do you like this current design? If you don't, how would you like to change it?

2. phpBB and vBulletin separate the forum structure from the thread list, for exmaple, phpBB, vBulletin. With this design, when you go to a parent forum, you only see the list of child forums, and you need click another link to see the threads. Do you like this design?

3. GoogleGroups shows some threads from each child forum, for example, here. How do you like this design?

We'd appreciate your thoughts.

This is to allow duplicate forum names. Forum names no longer have to be unique.

Hi Cordilow,

Cordilow wrote:

I will leave this question to another member of the Nabble team, because there are some details that reside out of my scope.

Cordilow wrote:

Anyway, I like the skins. I've noticed something with Darkness, though. Some of the words in my manual stylesheet stay black and they don't show up. They're surrounded with h3 and b tags, I think. They show up in the mode where you edit the forum, though. Everything else seems to work fine, so far. Go to this URL to see what I'm talking about:
http://www.nabble.com/Creative-Works-f14604.html
Up at the top, and down on the bottom, the invisible words are there. You can select all to see them.

Also, I'm curious if child forums can be made to inherit the same skin as the parent. It is nice, though, that if you view the threads of child forums from the parent, they show up with the theme.

EDIT: I see the child forums do inherit the skins! This is nice. I guess it just takes a few minutes for it to start working or something.

We are glad that you liked the new styles.
Also, you can fix the H3 problems in your skin by adding the following piece of CSS to your style:

h3 { color: #eeeeee; }

You should also wrap the bottom text with <p> and </p>.
Please try that and let us know if it worked.

We will deliver more predefined (canned) styles soon.
Thanks for choosing Nabble.

Careless users may post to the wrong forum, or ignore the forum hierarchy, causing theirs posts to appear in wrong places. Forum creators can now move these threads to any forum.

If you are the forum creater, log on, and you will see "Move thread to another forum" link in all thread pages. You should be aware of the following:

You can create child forums within your forum and catalog threads by moving them into appropriate child forums.

You can create a trash forum to move trash threads into it. Or, simply use Nabble's Trash forum

Only two people can move a thread: the forum creator, and the author who started the thread. If you move somebody's thread into a forum created by somebody else, then you cannot move it again.

The author who started a thread can always move the thread anywhere he wants. He may move it back into your forum if he objects your move, so please be careful and be polite.
