Query Analyzer - Performance Tuning Info

All,

MySQL is coming out with a new query analyzer and it's currently in
beta/trial mode. It will be a commercial product, but the following link
contains some very generally useful information on optimizing MySQL - or the
"black art" as it's often called.

I'll be playing around with it as time permits, as well as reviewing the
information provided at the above link. I'm interested in discussing
people's thoughts and experiences in performance tuning, as this is

Hi!

My experience with MySQL is based on Windoze, but I cannot think of any
obvious reason why Linux should be different. After making a regular backup
(as backup backup) I often only copy the data directory, then install MySQL on
a different box and replace the empty MySQL data directory with the one I
copied. That not only brings the databases and tables over without problems,
but also the MySQL user accounts and their privileges (afaik a plain backup
does not do that). The only thing I need to do is recreate the scheduled
backup task. The new MySQL install has no idea that the databases moved at
some point.
That worked for me every single time so far. My databases are very simple with
a handful of tables, no sprocs or stuff like that. I can't see why that could
make a difference, but since I haven't tried it I cannot tell you anything
about it. Just make sure that you don't copy the application files over. Been
there, done that, MySQL doesn't like it - not that I can blame it for that.
And the typical disclaimer: YMMV.

I know this sounds silly, but a Linux backup was done without the MySQL files being dumped. My task, if I choose to accept it (Mission Impossible theme music playing) :-) is to retrieve the files which contain the MySQL database from the Linux backup and restore them into another Linux system so that the database and tables can once again be accessed by the application that uses them. When the backup was performed no transactions were being performed to the MySQL database at the time.

How should I proceed to do this safely? Can I merely copy these files to a fresh Linux install with MySQL and be fine, or should something else be done? Which files and directories should and shouldn't be copied that pertain to restoring this MySQL database and tables?

I used it on a few servers and it gave some nice suggestions.
Definitely faster than going through each variable, remembering what
it does, and figuring out if it needs to be adjusted. It does want
you to have an innodb buffer pool that matches the size of your data
which is obviously nice, but I don't think it's always necessary.
There may be a few other areas where you have to use your own
judgement. It's also worth running, making changes, running again,
and repeating. For some settings (like query cache size), it will
keep suggesting an incremental increase until you get it to the right
value.

Yeah... I think you're right on that. FYI, if you get really
frustrated with the MySQL fulltext searching, check out http://www.sphinxsearch.com/
. The latest version is pretty awesome. It does require compiling an
extra server app and using a php api to talk to it. You create a
config file which tells it how to grab the data for your indexes from
MySQL. Then you periodically run a command to update the index. You
won't believe how fast and more contextually relevant it is compared
to the MyISAM Fulltext index though...

You probably got it by now... but you need the "IN BOOLEAN MODE"
modifier:

I did this simple test:

create table profile ( clients text, fulltext idx_fulltext (clients) )
engine = myisam;

insert into table values ('Diane Arbus
Ansel Adams
International Center of Photography
Weegee');

select * from profile where match(clients) against ('arbus' in boolean
mode);

My row was returned. To order by relevance:

select * from profile where match(clients) against ('arbus' in boolean
mode) order by match(clients) against ('arbus');

fulltext search problem

I have a table "profile" with fields affiliations, exhibitions,
workshops, biography, clients, skills, other (along with others).

This table has a fulltext index over these seven fields.

This is test data so there is only one row. The clients field in this
row contains this data:
Diane Arbus
Ansel Adams
International Center of Photography
Weegee

There is no problem displaying the data. But I can't search
successfully. This query:
SELECT * FROM profile
WHERE MATCH( affiliations, exhibitions, workshops, biography, clients,
skills, other )
AGAINST ( 'arbus' )
returns an empty result set.

I've done this elsewhere, but in this case I can't figure out why it
isn't working. I tried a simpler fulltext index on just clients, but
that didn't work either. Does anybody see what I'm doing wrong?

MySQL Count

Hi!

I want to count all the rows in a table. The table is called book and is
stored in the database books and the column isbn is the primary key. Based on
what everyone on the database claims, this should be the query that returns
the amount of rows in the table book:
SELECT COUNT (isbn) FROM books.book;

But when executing this the MySQL Query Browser gives me the error message "No
database selected!". I also tried
SELECT COUNT (*) FROM books.book;
but that gives me a syntax error at "*)...".

I tried several other variations that also did not generate any results. I do
not execute any other queries across the entire table before and I don't
really want to send some dummy SELECT * statement just to count the affected rows.

Any idea what MySQL has against using COUNT?

Thanks a lot, Adrian. That's a great post. The following paragraph
was pretty helpful:

"Finally, if you intend to prevent any writes on slaves but still
allow users to create temporary tables on slaves (quite helpful for
reporting and the like), you need to be careful about the interaction
between temporary table privileges and regular table privileges. Read
more about privileges in the MySQL manual. My simple advice is this:
create a separate database that only exists on the slave and only
grant temporary table privileges in that database. Creating the
database only on the slave ensures nobody uses it on the master (if it
even exists on the master, you already have potential problems).
Revoking temporary table privileges except in that database keeps
replicated tables safe from modifications."

That's essentially what I'm doing, but it looks like doing it in a
separate database would be the best method... I just need to change my
reporting table updates to work with selecting from one database and
inserting in another.

extra summary tables.  The error that caused replication to stop
didn't mention any of these new tables... but my sysadmin is
suspicious that the change in db structure could have been part of the
reason replication broke.  It's my understanding that it's ok to add
extra tables on a slave... that mysql replication isn't smart enough
to care about that... it basically just replays queries from the
master's binary log.  I've been searching the internet and mysql
online documentation and haven't been able to find a statement
supporting either argument.

Can anyone help me clear this up?

Triggers + MySQL Proxy

Hi,

I have a question re: triggers. I know it is highly advised not to
use UDFs to call external apps w/ triggers but is there any hackery
that can be accomplished using MySQL Proxy to perform any type of real
time system calls on INSERT / UPDATE? Im trying to find more
information where a scheduled cron (select / perform job X) can
possibly be replaced w/ something MySQL directly handles, if that
makes sense.

Thanks -- however, I tried all of those and they didn't work.

I also changed the query to:

UPDATE user1 u1, user2 u2
SET u1.login = u2.login, u1.password = u2.password
WHERE u1.username = u2.username

and variations on that theme, but still nothing worked.

The current version of MySQL that I am forced to work with is: 3.23

I don't know what version I was using four months ago. But whatever
it was, it worked then, but not now. I'm clueless as to why it
doesn't work now, but I worked out a way around it by using a LEFT
JOIN. Besides, it did more.

UPDATE `user` u1, user2 u2
SET u1.login = u2.login, u1.password = u2.password
WHERE u1.username = u2.username

And finally this:

Ellen et al:

I know this is an old post, but a new twist surfaced.

The above code worked great four months ago, but now the code fails
and reports this:

You have an error in your SQL syntax near 'u1, user2 u2 SET
u1.login=u2.login, u1.password=u2.password WHERE u1.username=u2' at
line 1

It's the same code, what happened? Any ideas?

Would safe_mode ON cause this type of problem?
