The presentation schedule at our general monthly meetings for 2009 is open.
If you, or someone you know, would like to speak, please contact me
directly. We just require a blurb about the talk and an optional bio.

Of course, meetings are always the 4th Tuesday of the month.

Michael,

Not only do you have to take benefits into consideration but you also have to take taxes into consideration so yes while you might actually bring in 120k per year you are not making that much. If you are working under a 1099 you can bet on 33% (approx) going to taxes then you have to pay for health, medical, dental, office supplies etc. I would be surprised if you came out with $70,000 as income. Keep in mind that you also have to pay utility bills such as cable, electricity, phone, these are all office related expenses.

33% of 124k is approx 41k going to taxes so I could see where Chris would get this figure. I am sure he is accounting for more than just the benefits etc.

As someone noted in the comments section below where Chris called 60/hr fifty K with benefits. 60 per hour is approx 120K if you work the full year at that rate. So unless benefits cost 70K he is way off.

I'm with David Mintz, on this one and, at best, this posting argument
strikes me as a preference, rather than an absolute. Granted, it may be a
community preference here, and if so, should be heeded, but it seems silly
to argue in terms of "right" and "wrong."

Reasonable people may also differ on how much context or content is
relevant.

I notice an off-thread subject line here, too. Should this be scolded, too?

This one website is the only reference you need, as you need to spend
every other second of your time practicing and rehearsing. The best
presentations always come from people that have done a *lot* of
presentations, which is not a coincidence; and it never gets easy for
them, they just learn a lot of smart rules and incorporate them into
their style.

Presentation Zen is a great place to read up on the different ways you
give a presentation, what works, and what doesn't.

Or, you could just go get Keynote and a black mock turtleneck (giggle)

Heh - yeah - this list seems to have spider webs on it.

Not to give you a useless answer, but from what I've seen, experience is the
best teacher for giving presentations. There are of course tons of books on
the subject, but I really don't know about them.

I think one thing to always remember when giving a presentation, is to focus
on specifics. I find that people sometimes try to cover too much, and it
can lead to a rushed and confusing talk.

The best presentations I've attended, are the ones that cover specific
points - there's always the opportunity to give a second part to the
presentation.

Well, this list seems dead, but I figured I would ask here since it
seems appropriate.

So, does anyone have any favorite tips/websites on doing presentations?

I've never really gone outside of talking to technical specifications of
projects/answering questions related to them. Not hosting an entire
presentation. But I expect that for the first few meetings at least,
there won't be much interest from others in running a presentation - so
it's time to learn a new skill.
