I believe georss.org would be better served by MediaWiki.

The Drupal site is atrophying .. there are layout and content errors all over. It's not obvious how to fix these problems, it's hard to manage. Editing rights are restricted, limiting participation. Best practices, recommendations, lists of sites using GeoRSS .. none of these things are available in the current site cause it's too much of a headache to maintain. The site does not reflect a living community .. and we want GeoRSS to live and thrive!

MediaWiki is employed by Microformats, OpenStreetMap and OpenSearch successfully. MediaWiki can be styled to look less like Wikipedia [http://www.opensearch.org/Home] .. though I think it's helpful for visitors to see that the site is a wiki and they can contribute.

If there are certain pages which shouldn't be edited (the core spec) we can easily place restrictive editing access on those pages.

I realize that by putting idea forward, if you all agree, I may be volunteering to get this done. I have no problem installing and configuring MediaWiki, and do some initial porting over of the current site .. but the help of everyone here to get the new site in shape would be crucial.

Mikel

+1. I had no idea georss.org was a wiki until Andrew told me.

I am an observer on this list and only responding because I have
experience with both Media Wiki and Drupal.

My media Wiki site example:

<http://ebxmlrr.sourceforge.net/wiki>

My Drupal example:

<http://www.wellfleetsoftware.com>

I have found it much easier to administer Drupal than Media wiki. I
guess it is whatever one is familiar with.
Also I know for a fact that Drupal is "orders of magnitude" more feature
packed than MediaWiki. Your drupal issues
are site-specific can be fixed easily by someone familar with Drupal. So
my suggestion would be to find that someone rather than switch
to Media wiki. Note you can make your site as open as you want. However,
I suggets not allowing non-registered users to edit because my mediawiki
site was spammed badly one. Fortunately we had backups.

HTH.

I agree with Farrukh. It's mainly just a matter of someone adopting
the site. I'm willing to do it. Especially if we move the hosting to
OGC. All of OGC's web sites are in Drupal, so there's a lot of
expertise to take advantage of.

Sure .. that's my main hope that the site gets some love. If drupal minded folks can make the site feel alive, then I'm happy.
