Ander is the official (e.g. paid) maintainer. I'm only a contributor.
He's currently busy working on OEM projects just now tho' and I felt it
was important to get moving with Xorg developments in cooker to help
upstream more with tests and bug reports and also to get more testing in
cooker prior to 2009.1.

I've fiddled a bit with the X stuff in the past and while I'm not an
expert by any means, I do try and keep up to date with the latest
happenings and follow the relevant development lists etc.

AFAIK there hasn't been a public thread.

If it's still as I proposed, there will now be a /restricted media
alongside /main, /contrib and /non-free on (some of) the public
repositories. However, you won't be able to actually get in it with an
anonymous login; you'll have to use an authorized login (your
my.mandriva account) and either have a Powerpack subscription or have
purchased a Powerpack. Those people will be able to access the
repository, which will contain the Powerpack-only commercial packages
(in /restricted/release ) and updates for them
(in /restricted/updates ). This will replace the old club.commercial
repository .

That's how I proposed it, anyway.

Actually it was added in 0.5.19-3mdv which I uploaded a few hours
earlier. See that changelog:

- restore elisa-core's dependency on python-setuptools (upstream bug
#303938)

Elisa does, at present, truly depend on python-setuptools, even with
python-pkg-resources split out. Upstream is treating it as a bug, so it
will likely be fixed for 0.5.21. But it's not wrong.

Yeah I get a warning every boot but it doesn't remove it. But then I do
have:
{
keep: 1
strict-arch: 1
}

In my urpmi.conf... I suspect the keep is preventing this problem for me.

When I update the package to "Provide: synaptics" it should solve the
problem anyway...

I checked and I don't have dkms-drm installed, unfortunately.

I just submitted bug 46139 regarding this with my xorg log file attached.

I did also notice that when I install the x11-drivers-input-synaptics
driver, it conflicts with the synaptics package and removes it. On reboot
something decides to remove the x11 package and put the synaptics package
back on, which means my trackpad doesn't work after a reboot.

yeah, I've just read it. I've read also the blog post from Peter
Hutterer: "evdev, xorg.conf, hal and other FUD"

However I'm not convinced, especially when :
1. i18n info were not supposed to be in HAL ( as a policy ), and now
we end up putting the keyboard layout
2. There's no alternative to HAL presently to store this setting
3. The issue with DM is not fixed, and whereas we, Mandriva users,
have the chance to have a tool like XFdrake, the other one will have a
hard time to cope with this
4. setxkbmap is supposed to be depreciated in the future
5. input devices layout on devices unplug/hotplug is not managed yet too.

However I don't care. Do whatever X dev want, and just let me a way to
configure my keyboard.

xorg mailing list, you'll see that they are still very aware of non-hal
systems, so rest assured this is not a worry.

Disable HAL support in Xorg, not in the distribution.

However IMHO 2 is the right way : Xorg should fallback to another
mecanism if HAL or evdev are not working/installed.

Thanks for the advice. My cooker installation is quite old now
(maybe 3 years) but all packages are up-to-date. I am sure I have
the latest fontconfig, but not sure of the font paths (and
/etc/fonts content). I'll have a look tonight.
Maybe I need to run make fontconfig again ? Would that help ?

My cooker is on XFS, re installed 3 days ago, but I cannot get the keyboard and mouse to work. Could this be related to xfs?

I think you should verify/install x11-driver-input-evdev rpm (there is a thread in mailing list about it), that is not for the moment required by X server.

Thanks for the advice. My cooker installation is quite old now (maybe 3 years) but all packages are up-to-date. I am sure I have the latest fontconfig, but not sure of the font paths (and /etc/fonts content). I'll have a look tonight.
Maybe I need to run make fontconfig again ? Would that help ?

My cooker is on XFS, re installed 3 days ago, but I cannot get the keyboard and mouse to work. Could this be related to xfs?

No problems, thanks Stephane and Adam, I guess I'll just have to

continue using rpmdrake to apply the updates so that I can continually
deselect firefox, and thunderbird if it gets updated, until the problem
gets rectified.

However, drakx11 does not generate any Section Files in my xorg.xonf file. Is this normal?

Indeed.

Tools need updated... I can possibly add a post script to x11-server
package to use info in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard to write out that file...
not sure if this is the correct place to fix it so we'll see what tv and
the other drak* ninjas have to say :)

Yes, I don't think we've enabled xfs by default for a while now too.

That is useful, but we need to have it fixed prior to that stage as the
login manager also could need non-us characters...

We have two options:
1. Update harddrake to write a custom FDI file as noted in another thread.
2. Patch xorg to allow a config in the xorg.conf for auto-detected
input devices (and patch harddrake to write that value).

I think Paulo is proposing the 2nd solution to upstream so it's probably
worth waiting to see the outcome.
