Hello,
first of all thanks for a great program!

I was pleasantly surprised to find the MailArchiver plugin.
However, it seems that it is archiving just everything in one or more
folder.
Would it be possible to have a cut-off date e.g. everything older than
Jan.1st 2008?
I'm doing yearly archives (currently manually) because it is very rare
that I need mails older than 2 years.

Cheers,
Bernd

As a work-around, use the quick-search tool to select the messages you
want ("ag 300", for example) to archive, copy or move them to another
folder, and then archive it.

Should be possible since the available information is present and used
in another part of the plugin. I will see if I can implement it in time
for the next release.

Hi Michael,

that would be great!
Would it be possible to have an 'archive and delete' options?

How about a more general "archive selected" option instead?  That would
avoid duplicating the age selection code that's already there; it would
also allow other criteria for archiving, for free.

One thing important for me would be to preserve the folder structure.
I spend considerable time to move messages to various folders.
Right now I produce a copy of the database containing only messages
older than x days; I compress and store it safely.
Then I delete messages older x days from the current database.
If necessary (maybe once or twice per year) I decompress the archive
and make a text search for whatever I'm looking for (grep -r 'search
words' * works best for me).

Thinking about it, would it be difficult to define such an archive
database in the configuration and then have a 'archive search' options
just searching the specified archive db?

Regards,
Bernd

Added this feature and also added the feature to have the archiver
delete messages which are included in the archive.

Get it from cvs if you would like to test it.

Be advised though, that choosing to delete messages after archiving is
a destructive action so you should only test it on folders/messages for
which you have made a proper backup. I have not been able to discover
any bugs but there is no way of knowing for sure if this is a valid
statement:-)

Hello,

I can't compile the plugin but get errors like:
/usr/include/claws-mail/gtk/gtksctree.h:23: error: expected
specifier-qualifier-list before ‘GtkCTree’

This seems to be glib and/or gtk2 related.
 glib: 2.16.6
 gtk:  2.12.11-3

What can I do to convince the compiler?

Bernd

You need Claws Mail >= 3.6.0.

Hello Michael,

I spent most of yesterday to build 3.6.0 Debian packages.
The archiver plugin is working and I managed to archive some thousands
of mails from 2006.

There are a few minor things I noticed:

I entered the target file name without using the selection button.
That caused Claws to crash - probably because the file could not be
created at the root (noticed that the selecten button returns the
complete path: e.g. /home/myname/mailarchive

The target filename is taken 'as is'. Would it be possible to add an
extension matching the compression chosen?

If the date is entered in an incorrect format the program seems to
crash as well.

Mail deletion is slow (almost 1 sec per mail) and if you have selected
the same directory it will update the message view after each deletion
of a mail.
Not sure whether this can be helped.
It is not really critically assuming that people don't archive their
mail all every day.

Besides that thanks for a very useful plugin,

Kind regards,
Bernd

BTW, the Claws Mail 3.6.1 packages are in 'experimental' due to the upcoming
debian release freeze, however you should be able to grab the Claws Mail (and
libetpan) packages from 'experimental' with only deps from sid.

It is pretty hard since there are no common definition for naming. Eg.
x.tar.gz or x.tgz, x.tar.bz2 or x.tar.bzip2. And then again, what if
the user really wants to adopt a different naming scheme?

Check. I am aware of this annoyance. The reason is that after a file is
deleted the window is reordered (applying sorting, action and rules). I
will have to figure out how to manually suppress all this while
deleting messages.

You are welcome. And keep testing since the only way to improve to
perfectness is to have as many users as possible test stuff and report
back to the developers. Together we stand, divided we fall!:-)
