MacPorts, formerly called DarwinPorts, is a free/open source software project to simplify installation of other free/open source software on the Mac OS X and Darwin operating systems.
It allows the installation of a number of packages by simply entering the command port install packagename in the Terminal, which will then download, compile and install the requested software, while also installing any required dependencies automatically.
>> If you set "buildnicevalue" in ${prefix}/etc/macports/
>> macports.conf, MacPorts runs the build phase through the "nice"
>> command so that "port" runs at a lower priority and doesn't steal
>> cycles from other processor-intensive tasks you might have running.
>>
>> Would there be any advantage (or rather any disadvantage) to
>> making the other phases, in particular the configure phase, nice
>> as well?
>
> AFAIK the nice command has been broken for a very long time. Just
> bring up Activity Monitor and check it out. You will fine the %CPU
> used by "nice" processes is always zero (unless you are using a
> really old OS).

The buildnicevalue definitely has the intended effect for me, during
the build phase. When I use buildnicevalue, I can see this in my CPU
meter in the menubar (MenuMeters), and I can feel an increase in
system responsiveness. I am using Tiger.

So my question is whether it would help anything to also run the
configure phase nicely, not just the build phase.

There are ports for which the buildnicevalue will not take effect --
specifically ports that replace build.cmd with something that
contains a space.
added the port in February 2008, and Rainer Mueller (raimue at
macports dot org) updated it in January 2009. You could ask them if
they have any guidance. But since they are not listed as the
maintainer, perhaps they are not able to answer such questions. If
you would like to investigate what needs to be done to fix it (talk
with the authors of the software, or their support list if they have
one), please feel free to report back your findings so that the port
can be improved. If you can supply a patch to fix the port, or to add
separate ports for the plugins, if that's appropriate, even better.
If you would like to be the port's maintainer, let us know.
>> case. I installed MacPorts yesterday and used it to install
>> claws-mail from ports.
>>
>> Everything went well with the install, and I can launch claws-mail
>> and
>> view messages, etc.
>>
>> However, only a few plugins appear to be built. I don't have plugins
>> for gtkhtml2-viewer or attach_reminder, for example.
>>
>> There is not a separate port for the plugins that I can see. And
>> there is no maintainer listed on the ports.
>>
>> I'm hoping someone can help me with this.
>> HTH,
>> Rainer
>
> Thanks for the idea, I've tried this approach. Unfortunately it
> seems to have
> no effect on the path that mod_php actually sees. I'm not sure if
> it's an apache
> security thing or something else.
>
> Is there any chance anyone would know why this wouldn't work?
>
> SetEnv PATH $PATH:/opt/local/bin

I do not know. Perhaps Apache does not pass the PATH to mod_php. You
should probably ask in a PHP support forum if you want to pursue this.

When I used to write web pages that used binaries which could be in
different locations, I would use constants, e.g. in a config file:

<?php
define('IDENTIFY', '/opt/local/bin/identify');
?>

Then in the code where I wanted to run identify:

<?php
require_once 'config.php';
exec(IDENTIFY . ' 2>&1', $output, $error_code);
?>

This way there's only one place (the config file) where you have to
change the paths and not hunt all over your code.

In addition, you can write the config file in such a way that it
adapts itself to the machine it's running on:

<?php
if (defined('PRODUCTION_SERVER') && PRODUCTION_SERVER) {
        define('IDENTIFY', '/usr/local/bin/identify';
} else if (defined('DEVELOPMENT_SERVER') && DEVELOPMENT_SERVER) {
        define('IDENTIFY', '/opt/local/bin/identify';
} else {
        trigger_error('Unknown server; please modify config file');
}
?>

PRODUCTION_SERVER and DEVELOPMENT_SERVER can be defined in each
server's auto-prepend file; see:

http://www.php.net/ini.core#ini.auto-prepend-file

_______________________________________________
---------------------------------+------------------------------------------
I just installed macports 1.7.0 on a fresh macbook with the sole purpose
to be able to use rdesktop. I had the hardest time getting it to compile.

First of all, rdesktop is missing a dependency for pkgconfig. Because the
output of bootstrap is suppressed, the only error I got was:

{{{
configure: error: Selected sound system is not available.
}}}

Secondly, in order to load pkg.m4 I had to set the following environment
variable:

{{{
ACLOCAL='aclocal -I /opt/local/share/aclocal'
}}}

otherwise configure would complain like this:

{{{
configure: WARNING: pkg-config not available, cannot check for ao
configure: WARNING: pkg-config not available, cannot check for alsa
configure: WARNING: pkg-config not available, cannot check for samplerate
configure: error: Selected sound system is not available.
}}}
> sudo port -f activate perl5.8

Do NOT do that! Using -f can also hide other problems. It's much better
------------------------------+---------------------------------------------

Comment(by mta@…):

> This may still be related to dbus. I activated dbus 1.2.4_2 and
reverted the gnucash launch script back to the vanilla version. If I run
'gnucash' from the command line I get the error dialog from gnucash about
not being able to find default values. If I try 'dbus-launch gnucash'
*or* 'dbus-launch --sh-syntax' I get the following error...
>
> Failed to start message bus: In D-Bus address, character '+' should have
been escaped
> EOF in dbus-launch reading address from bus daemon

This message occurs if you build dbus as yourself instead of using sudo
(you must use sudo to install it, but not necessarily to build it
depending on how you've built macports itself). The config file for dbus
gets the value for DBUS_TEST_SOCKET_DIR from TMPDIR if it is defined. On
Leopard TMPDIR has a value like

/var/folders/XO/XOAhu-l42RWX5U+kNPkZqU+++TI/-Tmp-/

This doesn't work because dbus doesn't like the "+" characters in it.
Besides it really should be using a global temp directory for its sockets
rather than your private one. This is not a problem if you use sudo to
build dbus since sudo doesn't pass TMPDIR to the command it executes.
I've fixed this and attached a Portfile with a patch to use /tmp for its
sockets. This patch also adds a +verbose variant that enables more
debugging output (under control of the DBUS_VERBOSE environment variable).
> Hello all,
>
> I have two problems.
>
> 1) I installed the new perl 5.8.9 and now a port I used to install (one of
> my own - sympa) says it won't install because DB_File is not found. Was
> that included in perl 5.8.8?

        Yes, it was (.../lib/perl5/5.8.8./darwin-thread-multi-2level/DB_File.pm)
and its not part of 5.8.9 (so far as the macport install goes). Hmm, not sure
why its not installing DB_File, I suspect its not finding the Berkeley DB stuff.
There is a variant for adding Berkeley DB support (builds db4.7), testing...
Bah, db47 fails to configure w/o tclConfig.sh (see #17922). Fixing locally
and continuing on... Well, it configured to use DB_File, I'll check on the
build later to make sure it works, but you could try adding +db (after db47
fix gets committed).

>
> 2) Then I tried to port DB_File and I get:
>
> blah, blah, blah ....
> Writing
> /opt/local/var/macports/build/_Users_<my-dir>_mports_perl_p5-db_file/work/destroot/opt/local/lib/perl5/5.8.9/darwin-2level/auto/DB_File/.packlist
> DEBUG: Executing proc-post-org.macports.destroot-destroot-0
> Error: Target org.macports.destroot returned: no such file or directory
>
> The thing is that .packlist exists in the destroot directory, so I don't
> know what file or directory it is claiming does not exist. The MP 1.7
> release and HEAD behave the same. Any ideas?
>

        Any reason you can't use NDBM_File instead? (that's the DB/DBM module I have
installed via macports for perl5.8 5.8.9)
The db47 port enables tcl (in the configure phase) but does not require
tcl as a dependency. Thus if tcl is not installed via macports, db47
configure fails as it cannot find ${prefix}/lib/tclConfig.sh

Suggested fix: move the --enable-tcl and related configure options into a
variant.
----------------------------------+-----------------------------------------
When I did an update of ports and vpnc 0.5.3 installed I started having
the following behaviour:

/etc/resolv.conf is updated properly to reflect DNS servres on corporate
network

I can use dig or nslookup to successfully query the addresses of servers
by name.

I can not resolve names of systems on the corporate network using a web
browser, ping, email client or anything else.

Name resolution continues to work for hosts on the internet; kind of like
the dns servers for my internet connection are still being used, although
the resolv.conf does not reflect that.

I have observed this broken behaviour with 0.5.2 and 0.5.3; I downgraded
to 0.5.1 and am working properly again

Could anyone commit these ports:

It seems some additional variants can be added to djvulibre port:
        - QuickLook plugin
        - Spotlight plugin
The problem is that the main makefile doesn't handle the additional
project. I don't know how to modify phases to build them all.
-----------------------------------+----------------------------------------
To use AqBanking within a Cocoa application without having MacPorts
installed we need a variant for building AqBanking with enabled local
installation mode. In this mode AqBanking searches its data, locale and
sysconfig locally / relatively to the application:

{{{
Summary
----------------------------------------------------

To link AqBanking statically we need static libraries in addition to the

Hello all,

I have two problems.

1) I installed the new perl 5.8.9 and now a port I used to install (one of
my own - sympa) says it won't install because DB_File is not found. Was
that included in perl 5.8.8?

2) Then I tried to port DB_File and I get:

blah, blah, blah ....
Writing
/opt/local/var/macports/build/_Users_<my-dir>_mports_perl_p5-db_file/work/destroot/opt/local/lib/perl5/5.8.9/darwin-2level/auto/DB_File/.packlist
DEBUG: Executing proc-post-org.macports.destroot-destroot-0
Error: Target org.macports.destroot returned: no such file or directory

The thing is that .packlist exists in the destroot directory, so I don't
know what file or directory it is claiming does not exist. The MP 1.7
release and HEAD behave the same. Any ideas?

Comment:

more or less... yeah... the problem was that you likely had xorg-libX11
installed on your system when you installed the gtk2 update and then ran
into bug #17558

The randr warning is more of a notification than anything else... it just
causes gimp to not get told about RANDR events (like your scren size
changing).

The dependencies should be changed to port: dependencies, but ALL ports in
MacPorts need to have that done at the exact same time, and all need to be
revision bumped. See macports-dev for my post a few days ago about this.

Comment(by mlk@…):

OK. I'm attaching just the 'diff -u' of the Portfile. Changing the SDK
is done there as a 'reinplace', and hence can be easily removed or
changed. Using the 10.5u SDK means that the resulting code will execute
only on a computer running 10.5 or newer; using 10.4u SDK means that the
resulting code will execute only on a computer running 10.4 or newer.
There are sometimes features in a newer SDK which make it attractive to
use; I do not know if this is the case for tuntaposx, but it certainly
can't hurt.
---------------------------------+------------------------------------------
I just upgraded gtk2 from gtk2 @2.14.5_0+darwin_8+x11 to gtk2
@2.14.7_0+darwin_8+x11 on 10.4.11, XCode 2.5 using MacPorts trunk.

The build completed successfully but when running a gtk2 based application
(gimp in this case), the program died with the now
well known
{{{
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host ???D
XIO: fatal IO error 0 (Unknown error: 0) on X server ":0.0"
}}}
error that is described in #17558.

After reviewing the ports dependencies, I manually installed the
following ports which were not required nor installed for the previous
version of the port
{{{
% port installed xorg-libXrandr xorg-libXcursor xorg-libXinerama
The following ports are currently installed:
   xorg-libXcursor @1.1.9_0 (active)
   xorg-libXinerama @1.0.3_0 (active)
   xorg-libXrandr @1.2.3_0 (active)
}}}
and then rebuilt the port.

The resulting gtk2 allowed gimp to run properly although the program emits
the following non-fatal warning periodically
{{{
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0"
}}}
when using the default 10.4.11 X11.app server.

Note that I am not using the +system_x11 variant.

Looks like this is the result of the lib style of dependency
for these libraries coupled with the fact that gtk2 is apparently the only
port that expresses a dependency upon them and they exist
in the default Tiger X11 implementation.
{{{
% port dependents xorg-libXrandr xorg-libXcursor xorg-libXinerama
gtk2 depends on xorg-libXrandr
gtk2 depends on xorg-libXcursor
gtk2 depends on xorg-libXinerama
}}}
The lib dependencies allow the Tiger X11 libraries to satisfy
the dependency even though the rest of the X11 libraries come
from ${prefix}/lib.

Perhaps the dependencies should be changed to port style in
the default +x11 case (use xorg) and changed to lib style only
for the +system_x11 case (use Tiger X11).

Assigning to Jeremy as this looks like
something in his area of
expertise with cc to maintainer
