Green and Gold weekend at the local ski hill reminded me that there is
more to a mountain than terrain.
You woulda thunk that it was a slow Saturday in mid January. Parking
lot was half full. People milling about the office, the Baseobx, and
especially the trails. Hikers going up and riding down, or riding and
and hiking down, or hiking or riding each way. Logo gear selling like
hotcakes in the revamped General Store -- call it a gift shop if you
want, but the cash register speaks for itself.
Foliage was at it's peak. Views were colorful and expansive. Wind
shouted that Winter was close behind.
Snow, however, was in short supply: best we could find was a couple of
dozen fist-sized clumps at the top of Catamount Bowl, suggesting that
it was the aftermath of some hikers footprints. Vickie has a nice
photo of one such clump next to a blooming buttercup. Seasons in
transition.
And of course, saw many of the old gang. SKiVTlers and normal folk
alike. The Mountain Community that sets Mad River apart from lesser
resorts. People come to Mad River for he terrain, but they stay for
this.
