MIPS kernel snapshots - 2.6.27-rc6

I've built some kernel snapshots for mips and mipsel based on
2.6.27-rc6.  Please test them on your favourite MIPS machine
and report success or failures to this list.

You can find the kernel packages at
http://newpeople.debian.org/~tbm/mips/kernel/r12234/

I couldn't upgrade my -rc4 install because one file is shared across these
packages: /lib/firmware/keyspan_pda/keyspan_pda.fw

sh-3.2$ sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.27-rc6-r5k-ip32_2.6.27~rc6-1~experimental.1_mips.deb
[sudo] password for giuseppe:
Selezionato il pacchetto linux-image-2.6.27-rc6-r5k-ip32, che non lo era.
(Lettura del database ... 113245 file e directory attualmente installati.)
Spacchetto linux-image-2.6.27-rc6-r5k-ip32 (da linux-image-2.6.27-rc6-r5k-ip32_2.6.27~rc6-1~experimental.1_mips.deb) ...
Done.
dpkg: errore processando linux-image-2.6.27-rc6-r5k-ip32_2.6.27~rc6-1~experimental.1_mips.deb (--install):
tentata sovrascrittura di `/lib/firmware/keyspan_pda/keyspan_pda.fw', che si trova anche nel pacchetto linux-image-2.6.27-rc4-r5k-ip32
Sono occorsi degli errori processando:
 linux-image-2.6.27-rc6-r5k-ip32_2.6.27~rc6-1~experimental.1_mips.deb
sh-3.2$

Now I removed the old one and installed the rc6. I will test it for a few days.

Bye,
Giuseppe

Not a success on my Cobalt Qube 2.

Kernel boots, launch init, but then the box hard locks when starting
hald. No error message on the console - it just stops responding.

I've tested the other 2.6.27-rcx and I've got the same behavior with
all of them.

Note that I've got a pci usb controller add in card in the Qube PCI slot:

00:0a.0 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 43)
00:0a.1 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB (rev 43)
00:0a.2 USB Controller: NEC Corporation USB 2.0 (rev 04)

Note also that the Qube2 is perfectly stable with:
linux-image-2.6.25-2-r5k-cobalt          2.6.25-7

I've not tested it yet with 2.6.26. I'll do that over the weekend and
let you know.

Can you try if removing the PCI card helps?

That would be great since we will ship lenny with 2.6.26.

Yeah, I noticed this as well.  waldi, I guess that firmware needs to
be removed or something?

Already done for plain images.

For k-p not fixable from this point.

Nope, even with the PCI card removed, it still hangs when loading hald
during boot. Note that if I boot with init=/bin/sh, I can then log in
on the console but after some time the box hangs as well.

I'm afraid it is not much better. I tried
linux-image-2.6.26-1-r5k-cobalt_2.6.26-5_mipsel.deb, which at least
let me log in with ssh (so hald is not hanging) but commands like top,
less, more, aptitude, ... hangs (but I can stop them with control-c),
while more basic (tty wise) command like cat - something wrong with
the console layer? But after some (random ?) time it will hang as
well.

Sounds more like hardware to me, but you're saying that 2.6.25-7 is
perfectly stable, right?

Yoichi/Thomas, any idea what might have broken Qube2 between 2.6.25
and 2.6.26?

Okay, good to know.  It's actually on my TODO list to move arm (and
possibly mips) away from k-p.  I hope I'll get to it soon.

Yep, with 2.6.25-7 I have not experienced a single problem.

First day testing: network is ok, scsi ok, usb not working correctly (as
previous versions), framebuffer ok, X ok, serial line OK, cdrom with is9660
ok.

I tried the newly audio device. It is working quite well with XMMS but I
couldn't play and audio CD, maybe because of the drive? The error I get
while testing the device using XMMS test procedure for plugin "CD Audio
player" is:

hmm, I've just checked git.kernel.org and 2.6.26 has the tulip MWI
fix applied, while 2.6.25 doesn't. So if this patch is not applied
to the 2.6.25 debian kernels, it might be worth a try to revert that
patch.

does XMMS use audio extraction or simple play commands ? If it uses play
commands, this will never work, because the audio output of the cdrom
drive isn't connected to the mixer. Does grip or another audio
extraction program produce the same error ?

Xmms plugin for playing audio CD have two options: "Analog" and "Extract
digital audio". Of course the first one doesn't work, while the second one
give ther error I already wrote about.

grip does read the disc, query cddb and display the track titles. When I
select a track to play, it does start playing, it display the clock going,
but I cannot hear any sound. Paying with its volume cursor change nothing.

If I try to extract data using grip, once I depress the "extract only"
button, I see the progress bar stalled at 0.00%. Nothing happens.

Bye,
Giuseppe

Good point.  Although we had the tulip MWI fix in the Debian kernel
since forever, our version is quite different to the one that went into
2.6.26.

Sébastien, can you please try the package at
http://merkel.debian.org/~tbm/tmp/cobalt/linux-image-2.6.26-1-r5k-cobalt_2.6.26-5test_mipsel.deb
This doesn't include the tulip MWI fix from 2.6.26.

Thomas, the patch we had in 2.6.25 and earlier is attached.

## DP: TULIP_MWI fix for Cobalt
## DP: Patch author: Peter Horton <pdh@...>
## DP: Upstream status: submitted to netdev

This patch works around the MWI bug on the DC21143 rev 65 Tulip by ensuring
that the receive buffers don't end on a cache line boundary (as documented
in the errata).

This patch is required for the MIPs based Cobalt Qube/RaQ as supporting the
extra PCI commands seems to reduce the chance of a hard lockup between the
Tulip and the PCI bridge.

It seems much better! I didn't crash yet. I'll let it run over the day
and report back this evening if it's still running OK.

Would it be possible to get a build of 2.6.27-rc6 without the tulip
MWI fix included? It might solve my hald hanging problem.

Thanks,
Seb.

See http://merkel.debian.org/~tbm/tmp/cobalt/

The r4k-ip22 image seems fine on my (headless) Indy.
