One of our readers posed this question recently to the LPR editors:

"Hi There,
Just wondering if anyone knows which Nat perfumery course is best to take which covers tincturing, isolates and fixation in depth?? (If one exists!!)
I have just had a reply from the Grasse Institute on their Nat perfumery course in Sept- (advising if they cover these things) - they said "no - this is a basic course" .
It would be great to know what training anyone felt was most helpful.
I have had a year of aromatherapy -( which was good training for e.o. safety, and familiarisation with the smell of each oil, and I have alot to learn about labelling regs, perfume formulation, better fixation than 3 hours, isolates, the list goes on and I'm going in circles, each time I find a formula I like, I read that some ingredients are being restricted further),
Lisa's article on perfumery education - on your page is excellent, and so is the tincturing info on your site. I would love to hear from anyone who has done a Grasse nat perf course, I'm also looking at Profumo's classes, (held in english in October), and anything that Tony Burfield has coming up.
Thanks for the great website -
Sandi Anderson"

We'd like to invite this reader into the forum so her question can be discussed, and possibly answered.

I *like* both terms, botanical perfumery sounds nice but as someone mentioned it doesn't always mean all natural just no animal, might be better to say natural botanical.
Natural is what I'm used to using and I use animal stuff like beeswax, honey, propolis and africa stone tincture (which is basically tinctured poop) and I ambergris, sort of like a person that only eats natural foods and likes their bit of wild salmon and sea trout too.
I often think when I here the term natural perfumer that it implies that maybe they were born that way...a natural perfumer ....
I sort of liken it to the difference between only using natural sounds to make a song as opposed to using electronic or a mix of both.
http://www.whitewitch.ie
"The world is too dangerous for anything but truth, too small for anything but love" William Sloane Coffin

From forum: Perfuming Basics

Yeah, there are certain factions who would have you believe they are the same thing ~ clearly, they are not. Try calling a vegan 'vegetarian' and see what happens.

The simplest explanation I heard was from Roxana Villa at the Luckyscent event with niche perfumer Andy Tauer down in LA ~ she calls herself a botanical perfumer because 'natural perfumery can mean a lot of things' <some which are not 'natural'>.

Not distinguishing between the two terms allow a lot of flies through the door.
I'm Ruth Ruane, from Ireland.
I'm a busy mother of 7 kids and I am editor of Nature's Nexus and own White Witch and a graphic design business called Loewen media (very small). I also have a new website called allnaturalperfumery.com.
At the moment it's in blog form but that's the best for getting hits.
I love natural perfumery and am an addict. I love the materials.
I love the internat and am also an addict.
I am also a joomla addict (cms used to build NN) very addictive.
I am going to go now. Myself and my 6 year old have planned to go picking gorse flowers to infuse in oil and tincture. Will take some pics.
