> padded roll cage on it

Rather reminds me of an illustration in an old issue of National Lampoon, entitled "Dog Fishing in America", in which the sportsmen were trolling for poodles from the back of a vintage Cadillac convertible.

> they discovered that the basic metal up there is not
> sufficient to support enthusiasm.

What a lovely turn of phrase...

And speaking of turns, we could certainly use a turn in the weather about now. Considering we're only 11 days away from the summer solstice in the north, it's rather appallingly chilly and wet out. With luck, we'll get up to about 12°C today, a damned sight less than what's happening down there in the antipodes, which is supposedly heading into "winter". It's not fair, I tell you, and certainly not conducive to tromping about in the woods with forty pounds of photo gear. I'm only a young lad of 58, yet fogey-ish words such as "humbug" are increasingly popping into my vocabulary with every passing day of crappy weather.

Still, whenever I'm feeling down, I'm comforted by the thought, "At least I'm not in Ottawa..."
which he links Uncle Dick with the word "brute". Surely after all these
years the crossbow-and-guide dog incident can be put behind us. I did pay to
have the pelt tanned and that should have been the end of it.

And the incident in the camera shop - I mean, really. A lot of
Nikon D-300's ship with wet tea bags in their mirror boxes, and I'm sure
they are all the better for it. Customers can be so petty....

Of course modifying vehicles for legitimate purposes, like fox
shooting and such, is perfectly legitimate, as long as one does not intend
to use them on public roads. You can accommodate two spotlight operators and
2 shooters on the back of a '69 Dodge ute if you weld a padded roll cage on
it and with a bit of ingenuity you can leave enough room for a ammo box and
a medium size esky. A skinning rack is a luxury.

I am jealous of those photographers who do have vehicles high enough
and sturdy enough to mount shooting platforms on the roof. I have seen it
tried successfully on Toyota Landcruisers and old Land Rovers but when
someone tried to weld a platform on the top of a Bongo van some years ago
they discovered that the basic metal up there is not sufficient to support
enthusiasm.
>
> Dave! Long time no see!
>
> Do you think approaching the better half with the theory that 16x20 will
> *simplify* things would work? After all, there will be no scanning, and
> no enlarging necessary (nor likely possible), so it actually cuts the

Gasp! It's Uncle Dick! I'd feared you lost in the great Wombat
explosion of 2004.

> Remember the Mighty Shen Hao?

Indeed I do. I believe you acquired that collossus before the rest of
the world became aware of their minimalist, bargain-priced "miniature"
field cameras. The sight of it all set up was something to behold --
truly inspriing. Can we have some more photos of it and the studio
these days? And are you still using Tit-X, or have you moved on to
something in the panchromatic field, or (startling shades of modernity)
colour?

> with a spanking new 180mm Tessar and a synchronising circuit

Wouldn't that be quite a wide-angle on your machine?

The new venture in the camera store should have many side-benefits,
especially the opportunity to obtain film at something nearer wholesale
prices, I should think. Then there's the opportunity to regale the
young'uns with tales of high adventure, of stories of derring-do in the
darkroom, and valour in the field of exposure. It's all a ploy, of
course, to lure amenable female photography students into your studio
for some languid snaps, but a photographer does what a photographer
must...
> 4x5,5x7, 8x10, or even bigger?

I'm happily shlepping a Toyo 45A into the field these days. I used to
drag an old Calumet CC400 around, which was --ahem-- challenging. As I'm
in a fairly small city, finding any sort of used large format gear was
quite difficult until fairly recently, so I was ecstatic when the very
camera I lusted after popped up one day about three years ago. Now, the
faithful old Calumet sits in its case, quietly resting until I need it
for somethat that requires pretzel-like contortions. So far, that hasn't
come up since the Toyo, as 95% of the time I'm in the forest, shooting
tree stumps and such.

Dear Friends,

It is delightful to read that you are all still mostly alive. I
note Nephew Dave's message about field photography in Alberta and sympathise
with him - my family long ago refused to carry heavy loads for me. Threats
and pleas were to no avail - they had neither fear nor a better side that
could be exploited. So I determined to set my photography in a studio and
deal with nothing that could not be rolled around a smooth floor.

Remember the Mighty Shen Hao? It has been equipped with a spanking
new 180mm Tessar and a synchronising circuit and now forms the centrepiece
of a period setup. I'm afraid the lighting is still modern flash, but it is
modified in such a way as to suggest a big bank of tungsten lights.

The subjects this year have been dancers pictured in the manner of
the 1920's specialist - Alfred Cheney Johnson. It is a wonderful excuse to
open up the aperture and blend out the backdrop, though I seem to be
acquiring more and more 20's set props. But you try to get cloche hats -
they all disappeared!

Since the last time we communicated I have satisfied a long-felt
curiosity about the Linhof Technika. I bought one, reconditioned it ( cut my
own cams!) and worked with it for a year before selling it. It was just too
heavy for what it did - I got the same results with my Crown Graphic at half
the weight. The complexity of the mechanism was wonderful but worrying - I
am much more comfortable with the monorail Linhofs.

I can report that my retirement from practise has been beneficial -
I went out and took a full-time job as a salesman in a camera store. My
specialty is the large format and darkroom area - but I am also learning the
digital business and enjoying the experience. I must admit to having been
bored and anxious about the next decade, but with the new interest I look
forward to work.

Unfortunately the darkroom training system that nurtured high school
students in our state is breaking down - there are still plenty of newcomers
to photography but they approach it dry - it is only in advanced classes
that they get their fingers wet. I am constantly amazed at how hard some of
the basic concepts we seem to take for granted have proven to be for some of
the students - at least I get to de-mystify some of this in the store. In
exchange I find some of the barriers to digital work are easier to scale
than I thought so it works both ways.

The one constant in all this seems to be the desire for the
consumers of photography and its equipment to assume that they can get it
all for cheap - if it is a friend. I have been engaged in a small commercial
war to educate them that they get me at the dinner table for free but they
must pay for my time in the studio. I suspect it might also be the same for
any profession and many trades.
>>> Most of us have a 4x5 enlarger, well we had A 4x5 enlarger, then
>>> like those that rescue racing dogs and old horses, we started
>>> "rescuing" other enlargers when their owners cast them aside to go
>>> over to the dark side. And like those that rescue racing dogs, the
>>> enlargers started to breed. New ones showed up unannounced while
>>> old friends withered and died and their bones scatter across the
>>> basement...
>>>
>>> Okay that went a bit far.
>>>
>>> Most of us have 4x5 enlargers, some have 5x7 and 8x10 enlargers,
>>> And I suspect few of us have migrated to a scanner in stead of an
>>>> Hello
>>>>
>>>> My name is Tom Kumagai and I am a new LF photographer. :D (amateur,
>>>> of course)
>>>>
>>>> I have been photographing nearly 30 years (since 10 yr old) and I
>>>> carry at least one camera every day the most of my life.
>>>> I buy 100ft bulk-load Tri-X every three months or so, and I don't
>>>> even count how many 120 T-Max rolls I use per month
>>>> (I am an IT engineer and work late too). Yes, and yes, I am
>>>> addicted to photography.
>>>>
>>>> I found a nice Nagaoka Woody 4x5 folder at an used camera shop
>>>> named Lemon, in Ginza Tokyo, only for 35,000 yen
>>>> recently, just fell in love with it and needless to say, I brought
>>>> home with me. My point of interest in LF cameras is its ability
>>>> to control perspectives and I do kind of prefer monorails for that
>>>> purpose, but a 4x5, even with limited movements,
>>>> being this compact and light-weight is really nice to have. I also
>>>> bought myself a standard 150 Fujinon, 6 film holders,
>>>> and a box of Neopan Acros.
>>>>
>>>> For a monorail, maybe I will get either Sinar or Toyo, used, and
>>>> add a monorail-to-linhof converter board,etc.
>>>>
>>>> I do darkroom myself, I do monochrome almost exclusively, I don't
>>>> have 4x5 tank (though somehow I have a 2x3 tank...)
>>>> so i will be using trays for film development for a while.
>>>>
>>>> By the way, how do you people print? My small darkroom cannot allow
>>>> me to upgrade my enlarger (up to 6x7, made by Fuji,
>>>> and it's a nice one too...). You all have a 4x5 enlarger?
>>>>
>>>> Cheers
>>>>
>>>> Tom
>>
>>
>>
>> Welcome Les and Tom, I'm glad to see some activity on this list
>> after about a full year!
>> I shoot several sizes but in sheet film mostly 4x5 and
>> occasionally 8x10. I have an Omega D2V which will go up to 4x5. I've
>> been planning to make an adaptor to allow using my 8x10 Agfa camera as
>> an enlarger, I can do it without modifying the camera itself I think.
>> I am not familiar with the Nagaoka camera but there is much
>> similarity in view cameras. Most of the differences are in the number
>> and extent of movements available. Old ones are IMO as good as new
>> ones unless you are doing very critical studio work where duplicating
>> set-ups accurately is necessary. That stuff is mostly done digitally
>> now anyway.
>> Fuji lenses are excellent although not very well known outside of
>> television.
>> Six holders is enough to start with. I don't know how many 4x5
>> holders I have, I think I was collecting them for a while.
>> I have two 4x5 view cameras, an Agfa/Ansco Universal View, actually
>> a 5x7 camera with a factory 4x5 back on it. I also have the 5x7 back.
>> I also have 4x5 backs for both of my 8x10 cameras, four Speed Graphics
>> and a Graflex Super-D. Also a Calumet CC-400, a nice monorail camera
>> that will do anything the more expensive ones will do but has no
>> glamour whatever.
>> I was introduced to 4x5 and Speed Graphics by a highschool teacher
>> who was also a press photographer. He taught me a lot of tricks
>> including how to use a Graphic as a weapon!
>> I process in either trays or print drums. I have an old Nikor tank
>> for 4x5 and use that, its quite good.
>> I contact print anything larger than 4x5.
>> I also have adaptors and holders for 5x7 but haven't shoot any so far.
>> Acros is very good film. I mostly use T-Max or Plus-X although I've
>> used other films in the past. I shot of lot of Agfa APX-100 when it
>> was available. Good stuff, I miss it.
>> I mostly shoot B&W but occasionally shoot color although that is
>> usually 35mm or 120.
>>
>> I hope we can stir up some more action here, I thought the list was
>> dead:-(
