Best all-in price depends on how many you buy and where you are.

For small quantities, online buying adds shipping which can be WAY more than local tax (if any), and so in that case the best price may be a local photo store, IF you can find a local photo store that stock the particular Kodachrome you're looking for.

I say the PARTICULAR Kodachrome you're looking for because you mentioned the Professional price. The Professional is typically a few dollars above the regular, but the ratio may change from place to place. Also, the Professional is not available everywhere (many local or smaller stores may not stock it).

I also assume you're looking for fresh film. (You can find film from the last few years, either advertised as stored in a freezer, or advertised to have test rolls shot and verified, on eBay for WAY less than fresh rolls anywhere today. Just search eBay for Kodachrome 64. Adorama also sometimes sells either slightly outdated or at least short-dated KR for slightly less sometimes, but not right now or lately.)

By the way, I would not recommend buying Adorama through Amazon for this very reason: When Adorama has short-dated film for sale, that's what Amazon shows as the ONLY film they have, without mentioning that it's short-dated! (Amazon seems to just automatically pick whichever lowest-priced KR listsing Adorama has at the time, so when Adorama lists short-dated KR that's what Amazon picks up, but Amazon doesn't revise the description in that case!)

Right nowk Adorama and B&H are price-matched at $8.50 for KR and $12.95 for PKR. (I seem to recall that PKR was $11.99 or something like that only a couple weeks ago, back when KR was out of stock at both.)

Calumet has $9.99 for KR but "only" $13.49 for PKR. (So you see the ratio between the prices can vary.)

(Since last month's shortage, J&R has the worst price on KR, at $11.99, and has no PKR at all.)

Dwayne's printable order form (they have no online ordering) shows $8.42 for KR. So technically that's the lowest. However:

What can vary among all of these is shipping charges.

In particular, Dwayne's although it has the best price for KR (by 8 cents) price before-shipping, has a shipping price structure which is likely to work out to more than either B&H or Adorama. (B&H and Adorama, when you order directly from them as opposed to Adorama through Amazon, have a variety of shipping options, while Dwayne's has only two.) Dwyane's shipping, IMHO, makes the most sense if you are already ordering processing through them (thus paying the "first roll" charge for that) and then are ordering film at the same time.

For large quantities, then, the best all-in price depends on finding the "sweet spot" around the range of quantities you're seeking (and in any case order in large enough quantities that the shipping average out to much less than it does for small quantities).

... As to whether there's any advantage of buying Professional ONLINE (AFAIK Professional differs from regular Kodachrome only in how it was stored, but can that storage precision be nullified by slow ground shipping across the country?), and when is there advantage to buying Professional in the first place, perhaps someone else has some insight on that?

the last I checked.

I think I had better stock up just in case. Who has the best price
in the USA? Last time i bought a roll it
was on Amazon and it came from Adorama. 36 exp of professional 64 is
listed as $12.95 today. Is this a good price?

Bad Kodachrome news

The fact that the processing cost is included in Europe comes from
the old times where the Kodachrome processing was a Kodak monopoly.
The laws in the USA forced Kodak to abandon the processing monopoly,
and to enable (by supplying information and chemicals) other
companies to offer processing services.
This kind of law enforcement did not exist in Europe at the time
and Kodak could keep the processing in house......As a matter of
fact, many processing Kodak labs were in activity at the golded
age... One in every major european country....
Obviously the situation today is much different.....

As far as I am aware it is NOT illegal here in the US.

When I was "in retail" roughly 30 yrs ago we sold Kodachrome with and
without processing included. The "processing included" type was sold in a
slightly larger box -- larger, because it contained a Kodak mailer along
with the film.

The anti-trust case which prohibited Kodak from selling Kodachrome ONLY
"with-processing" was in the 1950s as I recall.

BTW, back in those golden years, you could take your Kodak mailer, drop it
off at any Kodak dealer (presuming said dealer had a Kodak processing
route driver pickup), and the dealer would drop it into his pouch, which
he would place in the lockbox outside the store, from where it would be
picked up by the route driver with the *normal* over-the-counter
processing orders, taken to Kodak (in this region, slide film went in a
separate pouch, and was taken to Findlay, Ohio).

At the lab, it would be processed, and then sent via mail to the
customer's address as found on the mailer's label.

Neat, easy, *inexpensive*.

There was nothing in it for the dealer -- he made nothing when it came
over the counter, and he made nothing when it was processed, since it went
directly back to the customer -- a customer he'd likely never see again,
since most such people were travelers and vacationers looking to send
their film off for processing rather than lug it around with them
(subjecting it to heat, light, etc.) until they returned home. This way,
it'd be safer for the film, and, it'd be waiting for them when they
returned.

However, I am informed that this is no longer possible. Apparently either
Kodak or the dealers decided it's not in their interest to offer this
*fantastic* CUSTOMER service. There was nothing in it for anyone other
than GOODWILL and the promotion of photography in general.

In other words, the "a rising tide lifts all ships" theory had been
discarded in favor of "Ol' Faithful" AKA "I got mine, FU, Jack!"

Sad, really.

Back then, many of the people "in the trade" were IN the trade because
they loved photography. There wasn't a helluvalotta money to be made,
but, it was a fun job -- being around "photo stuff" all day, chatting up
strangers about the gear, the art, the craft... many of which became
"regulars" (I for a while put a coffeepot on my counter... probably should
have installed a cracker barrel too).

Now, in the "post"-ME-generation ("post" in scare-quotes since we're not
*really* out of it yet, even though as a culture we're as "out of it" as
humanly imaginable), stuff in which "there's no percentage in it for ME"
just ain't gonna happen. There'll be a plastic smile and perfunctory
handshake from every dealer, just so long as the other hand has free reach
into your wallet. Otherwise, "don't waste my time, buddy -- time is
money, take a hike."

Really sad.

But, I'm a fossil.

Processing also used to be included in the upfront
price in Canada too, until about 6 years ago or so. I
don't remember what the reason was for changing the
practice, ore even if one was given by Kodak at the
time but I do remember that at the time the change was
made, it represented a price increase because the
total cost of film and processing was greater than the
per roll was previously.

Quite aside from what it would or wouldn't do for sales of Kodachrome,
buying a law is really expensive. I can't see Kodak being willing to
spend that much money for _any_ film at this point, if they even had
the money.

I believe the Antitrust laws are an Act of Congress as opposed to being Constitutional, therefore this policy could be reversed by Congress. I had suggested this previously on this group, but no one here believed that bundling the processing would help save Kodachrome.

As any cable company (or Bill Gates) could tell you, antitrust law in
the US is more about companies paying up to keep members of Congress
in the style to which they have become accustomed than anything to do
with reality.

As I understand it, Kodak once did have the same policy in the US, and
it was ruled illegal under US anti-trust law.

Having processing included up-front in the price of the film is a Kodak-only European tradition exclusively for Kodachrome. I suspect it is beneficial to Kodak since it has remained in place. There is no customer pressure that upholds the policy.

In the US, this regime would probably be deemed illegal as it represents a coupling of the purchase of film and processing.

It is of course extra bad for you when you end up with film you never used for which you also paid for the unused processing.

Here in the US, unless perhaps you live near a Walmart, a roll of Kodachrome costs about $9 plus tax, close to $10 all-in, in local stores (remember, in Europe tax in included), or about the same online with shipping if you order a few rolls at a time, and processing direct from Dwayne's costs $9 for the processing and $4 for the shipping back of ONE ROLL AT A TIME. (Yes, shipping for additional rolls shipped AT THE SAME TIME is just $0.50 extra, but that doesn't help Kodak if their packaged mailer system doesn't disincentivize people from mailing each roll in for processing separately.)

Add that up: $10+$9+$4=$23 ALREADY. (And that doesn't count the cost of me shipping it to Dwayne's which is still another dollar or so if I use first class, plus whatever my cost of shipment packaging is.)

Therein's the problem of selling film with processing included in a world where processing is not longer local, and where shipping costs (even probably just to Switzerland) are skyrocketing up You can't price the processing differently depending on how many rolls you send in together (to have sent back together) if you sell rolls one a time with the processing included for each roll separate from the processing included for the next roll.

So I'm wondering if Kodak in Europe isn't simply bringing the cost of the film+processing there in line with the exising cost in the US (in the worst case of one roll at a time)?

Btw, WHY is processing included in the cost of the roll? Is this a European requirement, or just European tradition? (I ask this because it seems to me the only way Kodak could avoid rasing the prices as much would be to unbundle the two, and allow customers to choose more efficient bulk processing options.)

One user even received 340 rolls while others confirmed having received 120, 80 and 50 rolls this year alone. So maybe Kodak decided to let us pay for Dwayne's lab bad processing ourselves, but I wonder if this is the only reason for the immense price raise.

Most likely the Kodachrome slide trade hobby amongst aviation enthusiasts will decrease, resulting in a lower volume of used Kodachrome films. I know the train slide collecting branch uses Kodachrome as well, and I wonder what they will do. Does anyone know of any other specific areas and hobbies that use Kodachrome in higher volume ?

First of all, please try to remember to retitle your replies back to the original subject. (Looking up an email way later is not as easy if it simply says "Re: Kodachrome Digest, Vol whatever, Issue whatever".) Thanks.

Back to the subject at hand:

Since the email thread (below) about this, Adorama and Calumet also went out of stock, and J&R showed in-stock but jacked up the price to $5.50 more than B&H or Adorama (and, in fact, more than K64 Professional, which was still in stock at both those places for just $3.50 more than regular K64!). (I can't tell if Dwayne's ever went out of stock because you can't order online there.)

Finally on Sunday I signed up for an email to be sent when B&H had it back in stock. And Tuesday I got that email.

On Tuesday evening, B&H showed stock again but Adorama didn't yet. Today, however, B&H, Adorama, and Calumet all show stock.

Meanwhile, I did order 21 rolls (that seems to be the "sweet point" for shipping charges) from B&H late Tuesday night, and they arrived today, and I can report that they're labeled 02/2010 1559.

(In the meantime, I depleted the meager K64 inventory at two to three local SoCal stores -- I say two to three because one of them was a transfer of inventory from another branch across town, and I requested a specific quantity and didn't find out how many they had in stock at that other branch, so I can't tell if I depleted that branch as well as the one I was placing the transfer order from.

By the way, one local store clerk knew enough to ask me if I knew that I had to send it to Kansas for developing. :)

Anyway, apparently K64 has not been discontinued, but did they reduce the amount they make beyond the reduction in demand?

in.  That way the scanned image can be verified against the Kodak standard. 
Silverfast does this automatically in most of their versions, the AI, I think is
the one I have
 used in the past. The K3199910.Q60 is the one I use.

Insanely enough, this seems to be the model favored by various entities in
the photography world -- *flee* from a legacy niche market, and jump into
a mass commodity market in which the *existing* players -- many of which
are mega-players -- are barely squeaking by.

Yes that's what it is. You used to be able to buy Vision film in 35mm cartridges. I believe it had round instead of square sprocket holes. In any case there were labs that could print slides from the Vision film. RGB was one of them. I'm not sure there are any left. I'm just wondering if Kodak's going to try to do the same thing with this film, which could obsolete E6 and K14.

"Vision" is the name of EK motion picture film that has won an Oscar. Evidently they have motion picture camera, intermediate, and final print versions of this film technology - and now a still camera film.
