Hi Carsten,

Just tested revolve curve some more, and I get a problem when using a
non-straight curve: it only results in a cylinder (see attached file).

I've also tested the ruled surface, very cool!

Cheers,

> named array system as a whole is very impressive. Hopefully it will be
> possible to use a similar system in the conversion to CUDA.
>
As it happens, I just ran into an interesting issue, one that will
affect MergeMesh. I started working on replacements for the legacy
blobby operator modifiers (i.e. BlobbyAdd, BlobbySubtract, etc) which
accept multiple inputs and implement imulti_mesh_sink. Because this is
basically a special-case of merging multiple meshes, it has to deal with
meshes that have differing sets of named arrays. In the MergeMesh
implementation we are copying the first input's named arrays, then using
named_array_copier on the remaining inputs, but this will not produce
valid results. Assume you have two input meshes, each with 10 points.
The first mesh has vertex arrays A and B, while the second mesh has
vertex arrays B and C. After running MergeMesh, the output will contain
vertex array A containing 10 values and vertex array B containing 20
values - boom!

I see two reasonable alternatives in this scenario - either the merged
mesh contains the union of all its input arrays, or the intersection.
The first case assumes that a sensible "default" value can be assigned
when an output array is missing its input counterpart, something that
generally isn't true. I favor the latter approach for its simplicity,
and because I generally dislike creating data out of thin air. To
handle this approach I am working on mechanisms to generate named_arrays
by cloning a set of named_arrays instead of just one, and relaxing the
named_array_copier semantics to handle array mismatches quietly (since
it won't be an error condition to use named_array_copier on named_arrays
that don't have the same sets of arrays).

Cheers,
Tim

I was looking at all the changes and new functions and realized that I
need to find some time to do a lot of new icons, however we seem to be
hitting a complexity limit that is undermining to purpose of having
icons, particularly when dealing with variants of a function (e.g.
file export/import). One obvious fix is to have larger icons, where
the scale is set in user preferences, or we could have the icons zoom
larger on roll-over. Another is to have have a single file I/O object
that then has access to the different plugins so that you select it's
I/O type from a dynamic list, this would then be reflected in the
instance's name. You could allow a lot of other plugins to be grouped
in the same way, e.g. transform, mesh modifier etc. The above methods
are not mutually exclusive either.

Any other ideas about how to deal with the issue?

I did a commit earlier this day which now handles the picewise path curves from the svg file and now they are just one line each. I spent the whole weekend doing test on the knot vector because it's not just like implementing nurbsconnectcurve because that way it wouldn't preserve the actual topology of the path. Well finally I came up with an idea of how to make it work and implemented it, I've been having a bug with one of my svg test drawings and I'm kinda trying to figure it out now but it works pretty much the same as before just with the single curve instead of a piece-wise curve. I was just writting to let you know where was I and that I'm still alive :-)

> 64bit installation at my disposal.

After fixing a small compilation error (in SVN), I am still getting an
incorrect mesh. There are probably some non-converted arrays left. I'll see
if I can hun them down :)

> Is there a way to force the size of k3d::uint_t to 64bits without too much
> trouble for testing?

I wouldn't bother with this, that's what the dashboard is there for.

> Then on a side note - the failing test CUDASubdivideEdges.py is due to the
> difference in numeric precision between the CUDA and CPU versions - I have
> had a look at the MeshDiff plugin (a very quick one), but have not been
> able to adjust the threshold to allow the test to pass - will have another
> look at it as soon as possible.

I think the proper way to solve that now, assuming there are no topological
differences, is to add a new testmesh in the tests/meshes directory, named
mesh.modifier.SubdivideEdges.reference.2.k3d

This second mesh should be generated with the CUDA plugin. The testing system
will then try both the .1 and .2 mesh, and if one of them matches, the test
passes.

Cheers,
In terms of 64-bit support, I could install a 64bit version of ubuntu on my laptop, although then I will only be able to test in emulation mode - which may be sufficient.

Evan

Hi Carsten,

The mesh data always contains data in local mesh coordinates. Applying a
transformation to the entire mesh does not affect these. In the CGALBoolean
and MergeMesh plugins, this is solved by inserting a TransformPoints modifier
in the pipeline (automatically, at the UI level). Perhaps a similar method
could be used here, and maybe the behavior can be made optional using a "Use
transformed points" boolean.

The revolve plugin looks cool, btw!

Cheers,

Doh, you're right, of course :) Maybe allowing multiple curves to be
traversed would be good, too, i.e. take the first curve and traverse
all others along it.

good
idea, but I'm not sure of how there might be an intuitive way to input
the curves. Selecting all these which shall be traversed and specifying
the traverse-curve from hand like SelectNurbsCurveByNumber seems
reasonable, but then the user just sees the result and not which curve
he selected to traverse along.

I also committed a first try on the NurbsRevolveCurve plugin which
works fine sometimes, but there are cases where the selected curve gets
revolved around (1,0,1) instead of (0,0,1). And there are 2 more
regression tests now.

I wont have internet access from now on till sunday evening, but I'll continue working on the regression tests and plugins..

Cheers
Carsten

Hi Evan,

A small explanation about the changes I made in SVN to compile the CUDA
plugins:

- On linux-64, I ran into the error "*** stack smashing detected ***: ptxas
terminated". See
http://groups.google.com/group/cudpp/browse_thread/thread/f4b5139884aa57e5
This was fixed by upgrading to CUDA 2.0 beta on my machine, hence the
condition around CUT_DEVICE_INIT, which requires two arguments starting from
version 2.

- the subdivide edges plugin didn't compile because the edge list and
companions were 64 bit integer arrays.

Cheers,

Bart

Thanks

I will look at upgrading to 2.0 aswell - sorry that I have not gotten to getting the 64-bit version working. I will sort that out before I do anything else.

Evan

> While adding named array support to SubdivideFaces, I needed to be able to
> construct the target array in a random order. To do this, I put a variation
> of the named_array_copier in the mesh module, that has a "copy" method
> instead of a "push_back" method, so data can be copied to any position in the
> target array. Because this requires memory to be allocated, there is also a
> resize function.
>
> Is it OK if I merge the copy methods into the named_array_copier in the SDK,
> and add the resize function to named_array_operations?
>

Yep, I knew we'd need this sooner-or-later. Instead of your resize()
function however, I've added resize() to k3d::array and
k3d::named_arrays, which is much easier to implement and is consistent
with the goal of making k3d::array "just like a vector, but without the
types". I've also moved k3d::named_array_copier to its own set of
files. Good luck getting my changes though - the svn issues have gotten

Tim,

While adding named array support to SubdivideFaces, I needed to be able to
construct the target array in a random order. To do this, I put a variation
of the named_array_copier in the mesh module, that has a "copy" method
instead of a "push_back" method, so data can be copied to any position in the
target array. Because this requires memory to be allocated, there is also a
resize function.

Is it OK if I merge the copy methods into the named_array_copier in the SDK,
and add the resize function to named_array_operations?

Cheers,

Bart
>
> Nope. Made no difference.
>
> I'm also seeing this problem in ayam. The control vertices are
> gone. In blender, they are fine. You got maybe a simple opengl program
> that uses your way of displaying control vertices?. You using a
> special opengl call?.

We were using the vertex array methods (non-buffered). I've changed
the implementation to use the most basic OpenGL calls now. (don't know
why I missed that before :)

> Another thing I see, is that, if I go into face mode and try to select
> faces, it seems to select faces opposite to the one I'm clicking on.

Confirmed here on Ubuntu 8.04. I'm not seeing this with the nvidia
drivers on ubuntu 7.10, so it's possible it's a MESA problem.

Cheers,

I'm not seeing this in blender, which seems to only be a simple
vertex. I'm able to select it fine.
faces, it seems to select faces opposite to the one I'm clicking on.
the face that is facing me, the face on the other side of the cube
gets selected, red.

I'm not seeing this in blender, because there are control vertices for
each face to click on, which works fine.

Everything else seems to work fine.

You think maybe mesa-7.0.3 is fubar or is this a driver problem?

Folks:

I've updated all of the bitmap sources and modifiers to use the new
hint-mapping mechanism, which seems to be working well - this cleans-up
loose-ends in the pipeline that have been a source of inefficiency /
ambiguity / confusion for a long time. The plan is to wait awhile and
see that nothing goes wrong, then start working on (the much larger task
of) converting mesh-related plugins. Evan: this touched all of the CUDA
bitmap plugins too, you'll want to familiarize yourself with these
changes and keep an eye out for regressions.
