Sorry for the silly question.......

I'm using Linux Ubuntu 8.04.  I just discovered Rosegarden.  As soon as I started the program this sign came up.....

 If you want to be able to play or record audio files or use plugins, You should exit rosegarden and start Jack server before running rosegarden again.

Any ideas?

Info about the jack-audio-server:
http://jackaudio.org/

do:

apt-get install jackd jack-tools qjackctl

then:

stop all other sound-applications and audio-servers
run qjackctl
setup jack server for your audio device
start jack server
start rosegarden

maybe you'll have to install some plugins
(there are different types of plugins: dssi | ladspa | lv2 ),
in order to use them
example:
apt-get install dssi-host-jack wsynth-dssi

maybe you'll have to add this to /etc/security/limits.conf :

@audio - rtprio 78
@audio - memlock 400000
@audio - nice -10

Or even better:

sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio

That should bring in JACK, the DSSI plugins, a realtime kernel, and a host of
other things in one shot.  You might need to hit "ubuntustudio-audio-plugins"
too, and perhaps you have to install the -rt kernel manually as well.  It's
been a long time since I did this.

Then you'll want to reboot, and make sure you pick the kernel with -rt in it.
Finally, before starting Rosegarden, run QJackCtl and piddle around with it
until JACK is up and running smoothly.  (Defaults usually work for most
people, so you could try just hitting the start button right away.)

I'm afraid I'm in a bit of a rush this morning, so I have to cut it off there,
and don't have time to get into real detail.
