JXTA technology is a set of open protocols that allow any connected device on the network ranging from cell phones and wireless PDAs to PCs and servers to communicate and collaborate in a P2P manner. JXTA peers create a virtual network where any peer can interact with other peers and resources directly even when some of the peers and resources are behind firewalls and NATs or are on different network transports.
[JXTA discuss] PLEASE READ: Important update about the consolidation of the JXTA.org site

Hi,

As we communicated two week ago (see
http://www.jxta.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=announce&msgNo=295) we are
moving at full steam on the jxta.org site consolidation. We are
currently on schedule to complete the migration by end of June.
We have at this point notified owners of akk the migrating projects
and are working with them to complete the migration of their projects.

WHEN THIS CONSOLIDATION WILL BE COMPLETED ?

We expect the consolidation to be completed by end of June. Our intent
is to perform this consolidation as quickly as can in order to avoid
potential confusion on which site users should use. As we complete
the migration of the jxta.org site, we will redirect all migrated
project URLs foo.jxta.org to their new foo.dev.java.net location under
the existing JXTA java.net community.

We expect to put in place the site redirect (jxta.org ->
jxta.dev.java.net) and all project redirects by June 20th. The old
jxta.org site will be backed up completely and after we have verified
that all projects redirects are functioning, the old jxta.org site will
be deactivated.

CURRENT STATUS:

Our decision to migrate a project was based on current and past project
activities, project owner recommendations, as well as relevance of the
code present. We have completed the migration of many projects (see
project list and status included). We are currently working with
project owners to migrate projects from the list. Please, review
carefully the provided migrated list, and let us know as soon as
possible and no later than June 20th, if you are depending on any
projects that is not in that list.

AS A PROJECT COMMITTER, OBSERVER or USER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

For the new consolidated projects that have completed their migration to
java.net you will need to subscribe to the project, apply for a project
role, and subscribe to the project mailing-lists. Unfortunately due to
legal reasons we cannot move your individual project subscriptions from
one site to the others. The click-through licenses and contributor
agreements are different and therefore not transferable. This is also
giving us the opportunity to clean up project membership and will
provide a better accounting of active users. So, it is important that
you subscribe to the projects you are interested in.

Many projects that have been migrated are looking for new project
owners. Feel free to request project ownership if you are interested
to lead and contribute to any Jxta project on java.net.

We appreciate your help and support during this consolidation process.

hi i m Arshad and doing my research from LIverpool John Moores uni. i m in final year. i m not good programmer i must say. i m struggling with my implementation at the moment. basically what i want to do that i m offering gateway service in p2p network. all the devices connected throught this gateway so when service first join network send advert for gateway recovery on successful recovery it can then ask gateway to disocover services for it. idea is gateway itself is service, and we want to run more then one gateway as in case first gateway fails so we dont loss any communications.

myself created few services and passed message between them, as i said not good with prog i want to do that show that we are running more then one gateway and drop one and rediscover alternative.
please anybody there to help me !!!!!!!!!

PLEASE READ: Important information about the consolidation of the JXTA.org site

Hi,

As some of you may have noticed we currently have two hosting sites
for the JXTA community:
   - www.jxta.org
   - www.jxta.dev.java.net

For historical reason, as the first project hosted on Collab.net,
the jxta.org website has been managed as a separated hosted
instance than the Java.net site. A couple of years ago to respond to
community demands to host projects that use a different
OSS license than the JXTA license (jxta.org can only host
projects that use the JXTA license), we created a JXTA community
umbrella project under Java.net (jxta.dev.java.net) to host these projects.

In order to reduce project management, overhead and inconsistency
between the two sites, we have just started the process of consolidating
all the JXTA projects to the jxta.dev.java.net umbrella project. When
done we will create a redirect from jxta.org to jxta.dev.java.net, so
people can access the combined site via the common jxta.org URL, as
well as an individual redirect for each *.jxta.org project to their new
location *.jxta.dev.java.net.

We see a number of compelling reasons to combine these two sites:

- The Java.net site provides a broader OSS community environment
and will bring the JXTA community closer to all the Java.net communities
increasing potential community cross-pollination between projects. We
are already seeing a few great cross-community development (the JXTA
SIP-communicator provider, the Glassfish Shoal project to name a few),
and are looking to foster even further community collaborations by
bringing all these communities under one roof and one set of common tools.

- As mentioned previously, the java.net site provides a wider set of
licenses to host projects. While we are still advising people to host
their projects under the JXTA license, the java.net site will provide
community members with the choice to select the most appropriate license
for their project.

- Having two hosting sites mean that we have to manage two
separate project databases and web sites. Many of our users have
different userID on java.net and jxta.org making life difficult and in
some cases create confusions. We want jxta.org users to use the java.net
site, but they may have a different user ID than their current jxta.org
user ID. Combining the two sites will address this issue. In addition,
we are already using java.net for the jxta wiki since jxta.org doesn't
have wikis and the requirement for two accounts has been cited as a
blocker to people contributing to the wiki.

- jxta.org being a smaller site than the main Java.net site is lacking a
number of new capabilities that are already deployed or planned to be
deployed for the main Java.net site. Having jxta.org under java.net will
allow us to leverage all the support provided for all the java.net
communities.

- Finally, this site consolidation is providing the opportunity to clean
up project database and site information. Many of you have complained in
the past that core platform projects (JXTA-SE, JXTA-ME, etc) contain a
large amount of old, irrelevant or stale information that are often
confusing and misleading for new developers and users. We are looking as
part of this consolidation to clean up the core platform and related
projects, updating project information and removing old and misleading
information.

We have worked with the java.net hosting site folks to ensure that
the combined jxta.org site under jxta.dev.java.net will receive the
same level of functionality, performance and support than community
members have experienced under the current jxta.org site.

WHEN THIS CONSOLIDATION WILL BE COMPLETED ?

We expect the consolidation to be completed by end of June. Our intent
is to perform this consolidation as quickly as can in order to avoid
potential confusion on which site users should use. As we deactivate
the jxta.org site, we will redirect all the project URLs *.jxta.org to
their new jxta.dev.java.net location.

We will keep you inform about our progress as we are consolidating the
two sites. For the time being continue to access JXTA projects as you
have done it until hearing further notice.

CURRENT STATUS:

We have started the process of migrating the core projects under the
jxta.dev.java.net site:
   - Platform (Jxta SE)
   - Jxme (JXTA ME)
   - JXTA-c
   - Spec
   - Shell
   - Guide
   - CMS
   - MyJxta2
   - bench

We have reviewed all projects on jxta.org and generated a tentative
list of projects that will be moved to jxta.dev.java.net.
Our decision was based on current and past project activities as well as
relevance of the code present. Please, review carefully the proposed
list on the attached document, and let us know as soon as possible if
you are depending on any projects that is not in the planned list.

We are in process of notifying all project owners to help migrate their
projects.

AS A PROJECT OWNER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

If your project is on jxta.dev.java.net you are done! If your project
is hosted on jxta.org and your project is in the planned migration list,
in the next few days we will contact every project owner individually to
work with them on the logistics and the process to migrate their
projects to the jxta.dev.java.net site. In the mean time if you have any
questions feel free to contact us.

AS A PROJECT COMMITTER, OBSERVER or USER, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

As this point you have nothing to do! Continue to access the jxta.org or
jxta.dev.java.net as you are currently doing it. When projects are
officially migrated on jxta.dev.java.net, we will inform you. You will
need then to re-subscribe to the project, re-apply for your project
role, and re-subscribe to project mailing-lists. Unfortunately due to
legal reasons we will not be able to move your project subscription from
one site to the others. This is also giving us the opportunity to clean
the project membership for members that are no more active and provide a
better accounting of active users.

We appreciate your help and support during this consolidation process.

The Sun JXTA Engineering Team

Kerika 1.1 released

Hi JXTA fans!,

We are pleased to announce the release of Kerika version 1.1, a JXTA-
based Java application that provides a visual context for team
collaboration, with support for process templates, document
management and sharing of large files. We released a beta version a
year ago, that some of you may have tried out, and based upon the
feedback we got we have made a bunch of improvements:

1. Sharing projects just became a whole lot easier: previously: just
add email address to the project's team list and Kerika takes care of
the rest. Other Kerika users who are online get a full set of
project information (Idea Pages, content, etc.), while a storage
server holds messages for offline users. But best of all: if your
team includes people who are not Kerika users, they get their project
updates sent to them automatically as emails. This means that you
don't have to get everyone in the team to use Kerika before you start
using it!

2. We now have more tightly synchronized views for all members of a
project: whenever someone moves an item on an Idea Page, or extends a
project, or makes some visual changes, or adds content, or attaches
notes to items, or deletes items, or... these changes get reflected
for all members of the team. Which means that everyone on the team
always has the big picture, which we call "sharing content in
context". Every Idea Page has its own Trash (Recycle Bin), so if any
member of the team deletes an item from a project, any other team
member can restore it later.

3. The code is all in Java, so go ahead and try it out on Macs,
Windows and Linux. The UI looks identical on all platforms because
we built our widget set, which is based upon the Mac's Aqua style.

4. For added privacy, users can set up their own "private storage
server" on any machine they have so long as it is reliably accessible
by the rest of the team. By setting up a private server you can
create a "ring of trust": if any of your team members are offline,
updates intended for them will be stored on your private server,
which operates entirely under your control.

The popular document management feature works as before: you can
attach notes to documents, and whenever anyone edits a shared
document, this modified version is sent to everyone else on the team;
Kerika takes care of all the filing for everyone's computers.

Please take a look at one of the Flash demos we have available at
http://www.kerika.com/flash_demos.html and then give this JXTA app a
whirl! Getting started is pretty simple: signup by providing a name
and email address at https://sales.kerika.com/myaccount.php; then
click on the link in the confirmation email we send you to get your
personal License Key. After downloading and installing Kerika, start
it up and give it your License Key and you are good to go.

Your feedback would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Arun Kumar

P.S. I think the Linux version will run on Solaris as well -- can
someone with access to a Sun box help me confirm this?

JXTA JSE 2.5 "Pavlova" RC1 Release

Community Members,

The next release of JXTA Java SE, 2.5 "Pavlova", is currently scheduled
for the end of April, 2007. This release will contain important and
significant enhancements to JXTA Java SE along with the usual mix of
refinements and bug fixes. Because the JXTA JSE 2.5 release contains
major enhancements and changes to the internal implementation we are
releasing several test before the final release of JXTA JSE 2.5.

A second test version of JXTA JSE 2.5 is now available, RC1. This is the
second test release and is being offered for compatibility, performance
and regression testing. If you have not been following the CVS daily
builds or the previous beta release of JXTA JSE 2.5 then now would be a
very good time to test the upcoming release with your applications.

The first test release, Beta 1, included a complete review of the API
changes in JXTA JSE 2.5 This API review was successfully completed and
the API for JXTA JSE is now frozen. Except as required to fix critical
defects there will be no additional changes in the JXTA JSE 2.5 API.

This is a test release. It is possible that bugs and incompatibilities
still remain. It's critical that we find and fix those bugs before the
official final release. Your input is essential in this task!

Downloading and Installing
======================================================================
Prebuilt JXTA Java SE 2.5 RC1 builds can be installed from :

<http://download.java.net/jxta/build/milestone/j2se/2.5_rc1/>

You can also build from cvs, refer to the following URL on how to build
from CVS in general.

<http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Jxta/BuildingJXTA>

Remember to set cvs.version property to "JXTA_JSE_2_5_RC1" for this test
release, the command should be like this:

ant -f bootstrap.xml -Dcvs.version="JXTA_JSE_2_5_RC1"

JXTA JSE 2.5 Dependencies
======================================================================

- Java Standard Edition 5.0 Compatible VM (http://java.sun.com)
- BouncyCastle 1.34 (http://www.bouncyCastle.org)
   [Will be updated to 1.36 for security fixes before final release]
- Servlet 2.3 (http://java.sun.com)
- Jetty 4.2.25 (http://jetty.mortbay.com)

- Log4J is no longer required by JXTA JSE. Application developers using
Log4J in their applications will need to include it in their classpath.

For the optional jxtaext.jar the following are also required for the
configuration UI it includes :

- JDOM 1.0beta10 (http://www.jdom.org/)
- SwiXML 1.1 (#139) (http://www.swixml.org/)

Release Highlights
======================================================================

- NIO based TCP transport implementation. (#1583)
- Rewritten relay and rendezvous seeding implementation that connects
faster and more reliably (#1591)
- Log4J has been replaced with java.util.logging (#1537)
- Much greater use of Java 5.0 generics in the core APIs while
maintaining backwards compatibility.
- Inclusion of a new NetworkManager class to manage invoking,
configuring and shutting down JXTA. (#1539)
- Improvements to JXTA Socket reliability and performance. (#1463)

Known incompatibilities between JXTA 2.5 and prior JXTA 2.x releases
======================================================================

- A small number of classes and methods which have been deprecated for a
long time were removed as part of this release. The final release notes
for JXTA JSE 2.5 will include a full itemization of all removed items
with the current alternatives.

- A several internal interfaces (net.jxta.impl.*) have changed.
Applications which depended upon these internal classes may break as a
result of these changes.

- For the authors of Peer Group services, there have been important
changes in how services are started. Services which depended upon being
able to get references to other services in their init() method will now
fail. See <http://platform.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1600> for
more information.

Other Important Changes
======================================================================

- JXTA JSE has converted from using Log4J to java.util.logging for it's
logging functionality. If you were previously using a custom
log4j.properties file to control logging or setting logging options
using one of the JXTA configuration APIs you will need to adapt to the
new logging infrastructure.

Overall JXTA logging support is now regulated via a global system
property rather than a value in the PlatformConfig file. You can set the
default JXTA logging level when you invoke Java :

java -Dnet.jxta.level=CONFIG -jar myApp.jar

For finer grained control similar to what was available with the
log4j.properties file you can use a logging.properties file in addition
to the system property :

java -Dnet.jxta.logging.Logging=CONFIG \
     -Djava.util.logging.config.file=logging.properties \
     -jar myApp.jar

Note that depending on how your Java installation configures logging by
default it may be necessary to provide your own logging config file in
all cases due to default message filtering settings in the default
configuration. You can normally find the default logging configuration
file in the "lib" directory of your Java runtime. The default file is
also a good initial template for building your own customized logging
configuration file.

Updated Programmers Guide
======================================================================
In conjunction with the JXTA JSE 2.5 release Mohamed Abdelaziz is
leading the effort to prepare a new edition of the JXTA Programmers
Guide. (see
<http://www.jxta.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=discuss&msgNo=14725> for the
announcement and a special offer!)

This new version of the Guide will include updated examples to match the
2.5 release, several new chapters and many other updates to the existing
material. You can track the progress of the new edition on the Guide
project <http://guide.jxta.org> mailing lists and CVS. Draft versions of
the new edition are available in ODF (OpenOffice/StarOffice) format at :
<http://guide.jxta.org/source/browse/guide/src/guide_v2.5/>. The Guide
chapter authors and editors are eager to receive feedback and comments
on the new edition.

Community Members,

The next release of JXTA Java SE, 2.5 "Pavlova", is scheduled for March
12th, 2007. This release will contain important and significant
enhancements to JXTA Java SE along with the usual mix of refinements and
bug fixes.

A beta test version of JXTA JSE 2.5 is now available. This beta test is
the result of significant development and testing. Because this release
contains major changes in the internal implementation we are planning
two beta releases before the final release of JXTA JSE 2.5.

This is the first release and is being offered for compatibility and
regression testing. If you have not been following the CVS daily builds
of JXTA JSE then now would be a very good time to test the upcoming
release with your applications. The second beta release will be released
in a couple of weeks and will focused on performance and documentation
issues.

This is a Beta release. It is possible (and perhaps likely) that bugs
and incompatibilities still remain. It's critical that we find and fix
those bugs before the official final release. Your input is essential in
this task!

Acknowledgments
=======================================================================

Special thanks to all of the community members who have already
contributed ideas, reported problems, provided patches, and have helped
greatly to improve the quality, and robustness of this release.

Also, thanks in advance to all of the community members who spend time
trying this beta release, file issues and contribute to the final
release. We won't be able to do it without you!

How to Get Involved
=======================================================================

1. Download or Build JXTA JSE 2.5 Beta 1 using the instructions below in
"Downloading and Installing".

2. Rebuild your applications with JXTA Java SE 2.5 Beta 1 and test them
to ensure that they still function as expected.

3. Communicate! Share your feedback, observations, comments, criticisms
and perspectives at <mailto:dev@...>. Contribute to the JXTA wiki
at <http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Jxta/> If you are blogging about JXTA
we encourage you to add your name to the JXTA blogroll on the JXTA FAQ
Page <http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Jxta/JxtaFAQ>.

4. File bugs, propose patches using the JXTA JSE Issue Tracker
<http://platform.jxta.org/servlets/ProjectIssues>.

5. Follow the progress of issues and test fixes using the nightly
automated builds : <http://download.jxta.org/build/nightly>

Downloading and Installing
======================================================================
Prebuilt JXTA Java SE 2.5 Beta1 builds can be installed from :

<http://download.jxta.org/build/release/jse/2.5_beta1/>

You can also build from cvs, refer to the following URL on how to build
from CVS in general.

<http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Jxta/BuildingJXTA>

Remember to set cvs.version property to "JXTA_JSE_2_5_BETA1" for this
beta release, the command should be like this:

ant -f bootstrap.xml -Dcvs.version="JXTA_JSE_2_5_BETA1"

JXTA JSE 2.5 Dependencies
======================================================================

- Java Standard Edition 5.0 Compatible VM (http://java.sun.com)
- BouncyCastle 1.34 (http://www.bouncyCastle.org)
   [Will be updated to 1.35 for security fixes before final release]
- Servlet 2.3 (http://java.sun.com)
- Jetty 4.2.25 (http://jetty.mortbay.com)

- Log4J is no longer required by JXTA JSE. Application developers using
Log4J in their applications will need to include it in their classpath.

For the optional jxtaext.jar the following are also required for the
configuration UI it includes :

- JDOM 1.0beta10 (http://www.jdom.org/)
- SwiXML 1.1 (#139) (http://www.swixml.org/)

Release Highlights
======================================================================

======================================================================

- A small number of classes and methods which have been deprecated for a
long time were removed as part of this release. Details and discussion
regarding the API changes in this release can be found at :
<http://platform.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1616>. The final
release notes for JXTA JSE 2.5 will include a full itemization of all
removed items with the current alternatives.

- A several internal interfaces (net.jxta.impl.*) have changed.
Applications which depended upon these internal classes may break as a
result of these changes.

- For the authors of Peer Group services, there have been important
changes in how services are started. Services which depended upon being
able to get references to other services in their init() method will now
fail. See <http://platform.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1600> for
more information.

Other Important Changes
======================================================================

======================================================================
In conjunction with the JXTA JSE 2.5 release Mohamed Abdelaziz is
leading the effort to prepare a new edition of the JXTA Programmers Guide.

This new version of the Guide will include updated examples to match the
2.5 release, several new chapters and many other updates to the existing
material. You can track the progress of the new edition on the Guide
project <http://guide.jxta.org> mailing lists and CVS. Draft versions of
the new edition are available in ODF format at :
<http://guide.jxta.org/source/browse/guide/src/guide_v2.4/>. The Guide
chapter authors and editors are eager to receive feedback and comments
on the new edition.

Known issues in JXTA Java SE 2.5

Community Members,

The next release of JXTA-C[1], 2.5.2 "Athens"[2], is scheduled for
March 12th, 2007. As usual, we will stick with JSE schedule to make
sure interoperability between implementations.

[1] http://jxta-c.jxta.org
[2] http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Jxta/JxtaCAthens

For the first time, JXTA-C peers will be able to act as RELAY
SERVERS[3]. With the SRDI fixi[4,5] for JSE incoportated into the
upcoming 2.5 "Pavlova" release, it is possible to have JXTA C/JSE
peers in the same network together in different roles.

[3] http://jxta-c.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=271
[4] http://jxta-c.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=228
[5] http://platform.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=1619

This release also continue the effort to reduce number of threads
created/used. By introducing the NIO-based TCP transport[6,7] and
utilize thread pool, the total number of threads is now predictable. A
bonus to this is an improved transport event model[8], which enable
communication between peers have an active connection bypass the
routing process and gain some performance.

[6] http://blogs.sun.com/slowhog/entry/nonblocking_tcp_transport
[7] http://jxta-c.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=275
[8] http://jxta-c.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=286

There is another exciting progress is the TLS transport[9] for JXTA-C,
we would like to invite the community involved at this point to make
sure the API is comprehensive and work just as you would expect.

[9] http://jxta-c.jxta.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=284

A Beta test version of JXTA-C 2.5.2 is now available. This Beta test
is likely very close to what the final stable release will be. If you
have not been following CVS branch then now would be a very good time
to test the upcoming release with your applications.

This is a Beta release, it is possible (and perhaps likely) that bugs
still remain. It's critical that we find and fix those bugs before the
official final release. Your input is essential in this task!

How to get involved[10]:

1. Build the beta from the CVS tag "JXTA_C_2.5.2_BETA" or download the
source package[11].
2. Rebuild your applications with JXTA-C 2.5.2 Beta.
3. Test with your applications.
4. File bugs[12], propose patches, provide comments[13]

The JXTA-C Release Team

New Features & Significant Changes
====================================================================

Nonblocking TCP transport
--------------------------------------------------------------------
No more one thread per connection, TCP transport is now using
nonblocking I/O. With the poll interface introduced in endpoint
service in previous release and thread pool support, the process of
messages is still in parallel but each message is conducted by a
single thread without hand over between threads.

Relay server support
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Relay server code have been committed and now JXTA-C peers can act as
relay servers. This implementation is fully compatible with JSE
implementation, i.e., both C and JSE clients are supported.

Transport events enhancement
--------------------------------------------------------------------
With new transport event types supported, Endpoint Service now cache
messengers in both physical transport address and peer ID. When
sending out a message, if there is a connection, the routing process
is skipped and go directly to the messenger.

Issued Closed During JXTA-C 2.5.2 Beta
====================================================================
286 DEFECT P1 Endpoint/TCP refactoring with NIO and messenger cache
122 ENHANC P2 Incorrect handling of framing headers counting in tcp
transp
271 FEATUR P2 Relay server implementation for current relay protocol
270 DEFECT P3 openned tcp connection won't close until shutdown the peer
275 ENHANC P3 TCP transport connection to use poll instead of thread
228 DEFECT P3 Incompatibility between SRDI in JXTA-C and JXTA-JSE

to take place during

17th IEEE HPDC (High Performance Distributed
Computing)
June 25-29, 2007, Monterey Bay, California,
USA

HPDC'07
-------
High-Performance
Distributed Computing (HPDC) combines the advances in research and technologies
in high speed networks, software, distributed computing and parallel processing
to deliver high-performance, large-scale and cost-effective computational,
storage and communication capabilities to a wide range of applications.
The
intent of this meeting is to provide a forum in which researchers report on new
ideas and technical insights, application teams express the challenges of
constructing wide area or scalable high performance applications, and technology
creators report on future developments.

UPGRADE-CN'07
-------------
Content
Distribution Networks (CDNs) have emerged to improve the efficiency of static,
time-dependent and rich media content delivery atop large-scale IP-based
networks. The main objective of current CDNs is the efficient delivery and
increased availability of content to the consumer. However, modern applications
do not just perform retrieval or access operation on content but also create
content, modify and manage content, and actively place content at appropriate
locations. To deal with such new requirements, the more general Content Networks
(CNs) are being introduced. Design and implementation of robust and efficient
CNs in large-scale computing environments demand for emerging paradigms and
software technologies. Agent, P2P and GRID computing paradigms have already
demonstrated their suitability in supporting the development of high-performance
systems over large-scale, dynamic and heterogeneous environments. Therefore
their integrated use, which accounts for dynamism (P2P), robustness (GRID), and
intelligence (Agents), can augment the effectiveness and boost the efficiency of
future content distribution infrastructures.

Areas of interest
-----------------
In
this workshop we are interested in the combined issues of using P2P, GRID and
Agent paradigms and technologies to support effective design and efficient
implementation of high-performance content networks. In particular, the areas of
interest are the following (although this list should not be treated as
exclusive):

* architectures for general-purpose content
networks
* architectures for streaming content distribution networks
*
protocols and mechanisms for content management
* protocols and mechanisms
for content delivery
* protocols and mechanisms for content discovery
*
protocols and mechanisms for content distribution
* platforms and tools for
content production
* mechanisms for content-based request redirection
*
mechanisms for cooperative caching
* frameworks and toolkits for the
development of CNs
* novel applications based on CNs

Project announcement: JuMP - the Jxta Management Project

Dear all,

It's with great pleasure that I announce to you the creation of a new
Jxta project entitled "JuMP - The Jxta Management Project".

This new project, defined as a core one, aims at providing a management
framework for the Java implementation of Jxta. Large pieces of work have
already been done. Mainly:
(1) the definition of a management information model designed as a CIM
extension;
(2) its implantation in a manager/agent framework;
(3) the design of a graphical management application which provides
monitoring capabilities.

All the implementation work is centered on the Java technology (Jxta
java implementation, JMX, Mof2MBean, JGraph, ...)

We think that this project can be very helpful for people who want to
develop new Jxta applications and for administrators who host Jxta
applications too.

Source files are available (under CVS) on the web site of the project:
http://jump.jxta.org

A lot of work still has to be done and people who would like to get
involved in this project are welcome (and can contact me at the
following email address : guillaume.doyen@...).

Community Members,

We are pleased to announce the availability of a new JXTA Java Standard
Edition release, 2.4.1 "Eso Fafao".

The JXTA JSE 2.4.1 provides a small number of critical bug fixes and is
designed to be fully backwards compatible with the APIs of previous JXTA
Java SE 2.x releases and the fully complies with the JXTA protocols 2.0
as defined by the JXTA specification.

JXTA JSE release names are all of the names of celebration food dishes
from many cultures from around the world. Anyone is free to nominate
dishes for release names. You can see a list of past and future release
names at : <http://platform.jxta.org/java/currentwork.html>. "Eso Fafao"
baked papayas stuffed with meat. You can find a recipe here:

New Features & Significant Changes
======================================================================
- None

The JXTA JSE 2.4.1 release provides only critical bug fixes, performance
optimizations and additional compatibility with the other JXTA language
bindings. No new features or significant changes are part of this release.

Downloading and Installing
======================================================================
Prebuilt JXTA Java SE 2.4.1 builds can be installed from :

You can also build from cvs, refer to the following URL on how to build
from CVS in general :

<http://wiki.java.net/bin/view/Jxta/BuildingJXTA>

Remember to set cvs.version property to "JXTA_JAVA_2_4_1_00" for this
release, the command should be like this:

ant -f bootstrap.xml -Dcvs.version="JXTA_JAVA_2_4_1_00"

Known incompatibilities between JXTA 2.4.1 and prior JXTA 2.x releases
======================================================================
N/A

Implementation Compatibility Testing
====================================

During this release cycle JXTA JSE has undergone extensive compatibility
testing with the JXTA-C, JXME JXTA Micro Edition CLDC/MIDP and CDC
implementations. We've made significant progress all around as a result
of this effort and the assistance of the JXTA-C and JXME developers and
community has been very much appreciated.

In recent tests we have been able to successfully exercise all basic
JXTA functionality with diverse mixed networks of implementations and
configurations. For future releases we hope to further extend the JXTA
functionality across the multiple implementations and configurations and
further improve performance and interoperability.

Impacts to Current Users : LOW
====================================================================

JXTA JSE 2.4.1 is a drop-in replacement for any application currently
using any prior release of the JXTA JSE 2.4 series (with the exception
of the removed deprecations discussed in the "Impacts to Developers"
section).

Impacts to Developers : LOW
====================================================================

- Pay careful attention to the deprecation messages generated when
compiling your application. Methods which have been deprecated for two
or more releases may be removed in future releases. The JXTA JSE Javadoc
for the deprecated methods and classes will always provide information
on how to convert your code to avoid the deprecations.

- Be very careful to avoid importing any "impl" packages
(net.jxta.impl.*). The classes and methods in these packages may (and
will) change from release to release and no effort will be made to
retain compatibility of programs which depend upon "impl" packages. YOU
HAVE BEEN WARNED! If there is no alternative available to importing from
"impl", please file an issue against the platform so that an alternate
mechanism can be developed.

Impacts to Deployers : LOW
====================================================================

- This release contains a small number of performance and stability
fixes. Deployers should consider JXTA JSE 2.4.1 as a drop in replacement
for previous JXTA JSE releases.

JXTA JSE 2.4.1 Dependencies
