My book _J for C Programmers_ is now available as a bound & printed
book from lulu.com.  The ordering page is

http://www.lulu.com/content/2695144

Think about it: You could buy a decent bottle of wine, drink it, &
head off for a good night's sleep.  But for the same money, you
could buy my book and be put to sleep whenever you want to!

Henry - for what I usually spend on wine, I could get three or four bottles
- but I just bought two copies of your book so I'll have one to give away.

I bought a copy too.  I'm interested to know who those people are on the cover, and why they're there.

Please post comments on this in the general forum, thanks. No need to
cross-post.

My wine purchases are more in tune with Devon's - and I find the
charming picture on the back cover an equally compelling reason to
buy a copy. It will have an honorable place alongside my existing
collection of j books.

The back cover says of the front cover, "... some personalities
related to 'J'".  I recognize: J. Jonah Jameson, Jay Leno, JLo,
The Jackson 5, Joseph McCarthy, Jay-Z, Jane Austen,
Andrew Jackson, Stonewall Jackson, Janis Joplin, ...

As Roger noted, they all have a 'J' connection.  As for why...

David's watch was not working. He remembered passing a little shop
with clocks and watches in the window, so he took the watch in for repair.
"Can I help you?" asked the man behind the counter.
"I want this watch repaired," said David.
"I'm sorry. I don't repair watches."
"Well, how much for a new one then?" asked David.
"I don't sell watches."
"You don't sell watches?"
"No, I don't sell watches."
"Clocks, you sell clocks then? How much for a clock?"
"I don't sell clocks."
David was getting exasperated. "You don't sell watches, you don't sell clocks?"
"No, I'm a mohel [a person who does circumcisions]," replied the man.
"Then why do you have all those clocks and watches in the window?"
"If you were a mohel, tell me, what would you put in your window?"

Anyway, I thought it would provide better entertainment than
most things I could put there.

Thanks Henry, just ordered it.

I have a well thumbed copy I printed off ages ago but the content is
definitely worth paying for at twice the price.

Henry,

I got my copy today - not bad for choosing the cheapest media mail
and ordering only 8 days ago. It is quite beautiful, especially the
covers. The binding seems of high quality - all around a top-notch
product. The shipping was very professional too, safely and securely
packaged.

I often look things up in the on-line version of your book, and I
often refer others to it -- but it is easy to forget the pleasures of
holding a good book and actually reading it. I think I'll probably
read the whole thing and learn points I have missed by jumping around
in the on-line version.

Thanks again for your efforts!

Henry - my belated kudos as well - I got my copies on Saturday.  It looks
great.  The end result was quite good and fairly priced but the Lulu service
was a little flaky: I got three e-mails from them - one each on Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday - telling me that my order had just shipped.  The
latter two had those days' dates but the first one told me it had been
shipped on "31 December 1969" - which looks like Unix time 0.

The other thing is that I was happy to be offered a US Postal Service
shipping option - too many on-line businesses disdain this but it's cheaper
and much more convenient for me than the private shippers as the USPS will
hold it for me in the post office across the street, instead of some place
far downtown, if they can't deliver it during the work-week.

I look forward to settling down with the book one evening soon.

Regards,

Devon

I got my copy today.  The first thing that struck me is the shape:  I like that it's square.  I also like the friendly typography and the (physical) material.   Overall the presentation is like a handbook or reference.  Well done!

I liked that shape, because it's not too tall for a normal
shelf, yet it's wide enough that all the coding examples
work without line wrap.

The binding and cover seem first-quality, too.  The paper
isn't pure white but it's acceptable.

As Joey said, a real book has its advantages.  For one thing,
the index works; but mostly I think it's easier to read paper
than a CRT.

All in all, I thought lulu.com did a fabulous job.  I've just
learned that it's a local (Raleigh, NC) company - same
guy who started Red Hat.

BTW I had no problems receiving copy (in 3-4 days, to Australia no less !)
via Lulu using base postage, which is as good as Amazon express.

Great job Henry, it¹s nice to have a paper copy also.../Rob Hodgkinson

Oh, this is a good read -- though the cover (esp. Stalin behind Leno's
ear) -- had me hooked already!

Wow, that's a hoot.

I was thinking of offering a prize to the first person to
name them all, but this is even better, partly because
number 4 is obscure enough that I might be accused of
bad faith.

Is #4 your great grandfather J.P. Morgan Rich? :-)
The person does bear some resemblance to Henry James.
