I sent a message to audacity-users Saturday asking if anyone had any success with any version of Audacity on an Intel Mac (both stable and beta have serious problems for me) and I still don't see the post. I haven't seen any traffic from that list since Feb 21 when there was a long thread about the now defunct audacity-help.

Is there an email address for audacity list issues so I don't have to spam the lists that seem to work for me? ;-)

Hi Steve

-users list is broken - I've been on at SF for nearly a month now
to fix it.

audacity-feedback@... is a list we set up to
partially replace -help list. It does not normally offer any response
or personal support, but is a no-subscription list you can write to
for reporting a problem like a broken link or list problem, or
things like perceived bugs (after contacting the Forum first):
http://audacityteam.org/forum/

Unfortunately, -feedback broke at the same time as -users, so that only
leaves our developers list  audacity-devel@...
(a subscription list), or write to the owner of the broken list (which
is me as regards the -users list).

There should not be too many problems with stable and Intel Mac
if you run 1.2.5 (not 1.2.6, which is for PPC). As for the Beta
there are numerous problems, I recommend you try this test
version  (requires OS X 10.4):

I have a pretty gross problem with 1.2.5 which is hard to understand if no one else sees it. I create a simple project by importing two mp3 files and I am broken because every menu item of interest is greyed out. audacity acts as if nothing is selected, however no matter what I do to select something (click on track, select all from the menu etc.) everything stays greyed out. I am dead in the water and can't do anything.

I've been using the beta because at least if works most of the time but like any beta project it tend to degrade with time and I eventually have to delete my projects and start over. I'll try the new beta you point to. Maybe it will work better. Thanks for the pointer.

My 1.2.5 problem is so gross and so repeatable (I try again every couple of months every time he beta fails me) I am amazed that others haven't reported it. Of course these days how would they report it if sf is failing us. There are probably not that many intel mac users anyway. Maybe we should just create a yahoo group for the open membership lists. Yahoo groups always work. I don't think sf has anything to add there. sf tends to work better for closely managed developer lists.

It's pretty tough not to be able to ask for help when the software on the web site gives such significant problems. I'm sort of left with giving up on Audacity as my only choice. After all these years of swearing by Audacity and selling its virtues to my singing pals it is not a choice I am happy with.

The policy is to use the Forum as the first port of call, Steve, unless
you're already on -users list (and it's working). We can't sustain the
old -help list method of working where the majority of the job
is answering the same questions over and over, and half the time
you get the answer back that they just worked it out anyway (human
nature being to jump at an easy no-subscription way to email
that promises an answer, then try and fix it yourself).

Once -feedback gets under way, I may change it so that the auto response
invites the user to write back if they still need help, after which one-to-one
support will be given.

I'll reply off list to you about the rest of it.

Thanks

Gale

What is this "Forum" you mention? I've heard it mentioned before but up till now I assumed that it was just the email list. "Forum" is not a noun that pulls up any specific Internet connotations for me. It is a commonly used generic word to describe a place to exchange information. Unlike "email list" "forum" doesn't point to any specific functionality that I know of. What does it mean in the Audacity context? I wonder if other people are equally confused by the reference. Maybe you should call it something that is more informative of what it is and how to find it. Especially because it seems to be aimed at Audacity beginners.

Like most Forums on the internet, you have to read and post messages
online in your web browser (and explicitly log on when you want to post),
whereas on the mailing lists you can (if you wish) read and post
entirely within your email client.  See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_forum

The Audacity Forum and mailing lists are described here on our main web
site:
