Installing templates

Hello,

This is my first message in the list, so excuse any annoyance I could cause.

I have searched a lot on the web without success about this topic:
How can I install templates in the mediawiki I just installed ?
I read the docs and could successfuly create a template manually. What I
want is to find a way to quickly create a bunch of templates. For example,
I've found this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Current. I would
like to copy it (if it is legally permitted) to my own wiki. Copying a
template is not so easy because the template reference other templates which
in turn reference other templates and images. Maybe I missed something. I
imagine there is a place I can find templates I could start with.

Any advice is welcome.
Best regards,

Yes François and it can become a nightmare
You can copuy following the licence (free ou not) of the wiki
For copying a entire complex Template, you have to follow all the links
Perhaps it's easier to begin with simple Templates with no links
Then you will earn and install all the tips that construct a compex
template, by copying and correcting all the adress links that could vary

... et bonjour à la Belgique ;O)

That's what I've understood. But is copying the only way to add a bunch of
templates ?
I saw templates libraries on the web but it looks like there is no setup.
Isn't somewhere a setup to automate the process ? I can hardly understand
that each wiki owner has to create the templates himself !

Hello,
where did you find such template librairies ?

I think there could be a setup... a script which create automatically pages,
but I'd like to see.
In my wikis, I copy the template I want... or I make my own myself :) But
they are not as complicated as some on Wikipedia.

I think that trying to copy templates (and adapting) is the very best way to
learn wiki
( for this reason en.wikipedia seems somptuous, but no library known)
So you can discover what comes with basic element (common.css) or what comes
with personnal tips, or what comes with extensions, and/or with
localsettings.
Some template could need a special extension, and would not run if the wiki
is not featured with this extension ( for exemple dpl, and so on)
AND little by little you have to learn all the differents rules that are (or
not) accepted by Mediawiki
I have never speak english ( ça s'entend, je crois !) and have never learn
computing but i do it now ( I hope ?) because of templates with mediawiki ,
and that's great, thx to his community and to the software  ;O)))
