Inkscape is an open source drawing tool with capabilities similar to Illustrator, Freehand, and CorelDraw that uses the W3C standard scalable vector graphics format (SVG). Some supported SVG features include basic shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending, transforms, gradients, and grouping. In addition, Inkscape supports Creative Commons meta-data, node-editing, layers, complex path operations, text-on-path, and SVG XML editing. It also imports several formats like EPS, Postscript, JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats. Inkscape home is here.
>> Bulia, just curious... is there any hope for the cairo switch during
>> this release cycle (whether the goal is end of the year or spring)?
>> Would anyone be able to assist you with it? Just wondering as it's one
>> of the most beneficial things to refactor in the codebase it would seem.
>>
>
> We'll see. The work I'm doing right now on PS/PDF export has direct
> relation to that, as it also uses cairo to render the document, and I
> think we will be able to reuse much of that code in the screen
> rendering.
>

So now a side question based on your response. For people that want to
see us move to cairo, would the most helpful thing they could do be to
improve/troubleshoot/bugfix our PS/PDF export? Obviously that provides
no guarantees that code can be reused or that it would speed up
cairofication, but perhaps it would seem more bite-sized and doable for
other contributors to submit small fixes and patches. Plus we get better
PDF export which is good in itself. :)

Dunno if this would be of help, but Gimp can import Inkscape paths, and it tends to separate out each individual path, so you might be able to just import the .svg into the paths menu from Gimp and then make selections, etc. Kind of awkward and cumbersome, but that might work.
> Date: Saturday, September 6, 2008, 4:34 PM
> Hi,
> I have been thrashing around the net looking for a solution
> and thought to ask
> here because I can't get no satisfaction ;)
>
> I want to draw the frames of a small animation (ajax
> throbber) with Ink.
> Ideally I would do this:
> 1. Draw the frames - all on one layer. Use tricks like
> interpolate etc.
> 2. Select everything and press *magic button* which would
> a. Split each object to it's own layer. So I can at
> least pull it into Gimp
> and animate/export from there.
> OR
> b. Allow me to export each to a png *without* anything in
> the background so I
> can go directly to imagemagick to make the final gif.
>
> The problem with things as I find them now (and I hope I am
> missing the
> obvious) is that exporting includes stuff that's
> underneath the bounding box.
> I want a clean single object/layer in my PNG per frame,
> not one including all
> the stuff around/behind it.
>
> A kind of 'batch export each item while hiding *all*
> others each time' option.
>
> Any hope ?

> Hello,
>
> The latest win32 build from modevia:
> crashes when you try to import either a jpg or a gif file. A png is
> imported fine.
>
> OS: Windows 2000 SP4
>
> Steps to reproduce:
> - Launch Inkscape (create a new empty document)
> - Select Import from the menu
> - The standard Windows dialog opens
> - Click on a jpg or gif file name
>
> Result:
> Message. Runtime error, Inkscape encountered an error and will now
> close (or something)
> Crash.
>
> If you already have an open document opened with stuff in it, the
> import dialog doesn't make Inkscape crash, but it does nothing.
>
>

I tried it, and the same happens here. Here is the backtrace I was
able to get.

Load() seems to work. But maybe the native preview code is having trouble
with the 2.14 API.

The explanation for why this is
happening is at:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/179988/comments/47

Before the GTK+ update, Inkscape was scaling the printer DC and creating
it's own cairo_win32_printing_surface. Now Inkscape needs to rely on
gtk_print to set the scale. Inkscape is correctly setting the gtk_print
units to points. The problem is that Inkscape is getting the target
surface from the print context then passing this to the renderer. As a
result the scale that gtk_print sets on the print context is not used.
One solution would be to use cairo_get_matrix() to get the scale from
the print context and set it on every new context created from the
target surface.
> > Ah! just thought of something. lpe Spiro can also create
> Geom::appendNew<> (through
> > SPCurve)...
>
> Hmm, how is that possible? IIRC, the appendNew API was
> specifically designed to prevent that...

I know! I still don't know why it happens, I've checked the lpe spiro code over and over, really strange. It seems to happen for spiro paths that spin out of control (chaotic, creating really big paths that maybe go to inf?)
The fix back then was to multiply the path with identity matrix, which would trigger the continuity error, catch it and stop spiro calculation. Note that I had to explicitly run operator* to trigger the exception. appendNew didn't.
The full switch over to cairo is a pretty big change, right? If Bulia
has progress toward this goal, is there someway we could get those
changes into git or a branch in svn where more than one person could
> Our goal is, before all, a stable and usable release. Right now the
> codebase is VERY destabilized, probably more so than ever before, due
> to all the refactorings. As I wrote recently, even I sometimes have to
> go back to older stabler build to do some work. If we really focus on
> this, we probably can stabilize it enough for releasing within the
> year, but we have to work hard for that.
>

Yeah, the destabilized codebase was my main reason for thinking it
didn't seem likely for this year. However, it sounds like there is some
interest in getting a release out by the holidays. Given that not only
refactoring was a goal, but that stability and bug fixing were cited as
significant goals as well... if people are really interesting in this
timeframe, we should lay out a timeline with dates for when various
goals need to be met relatively soon.

Personally I'm less concerned about an end of the year release, but
would like to see a release come out in time for the spring linux distro
release cut off dates.

Bulia, just curious... is there any hope for the cairo switch during
this release cycle (whether the goal is end of the year or spring)?
Would anyone be able to assist you with it? Just wondering as it's one
of the most beneficial things to refactor in the codebase it would seem.
>
> Our goal is, before all, a stable and usable release. Right
> now the codebase is VERY destabilized, probably more so than
> ever before, due to all the refactorings. As I wrote
> recently, even I sometimes have to go back to older stabler
for Sep 23, when Adobe CS4 will be announced, and see what they come

Since I was a release warden for 0.46 and will be the one moving forward
for 0.47 as well I'd like to touch base.

First, it seems like patches intended for 0.46.1 have died down

Hi,

I'm a great fan of Inkscape and like testing new versions but no one seems to compile for OS X anymore.
It's 2,5 months since any build came out... while the win builds are allmost made daily.
I've tried to follow the guide for compiling but i just get errors and just don't know how to do what.

If someone could make a screencast on how to install what and how to do things i'd be happy to help out and compiling.

Cheers
From forum: Inkscape - Dev

> Nodes are awkward legacy, they should be hidden and not affect
> anything. All new tools we've been adding recently go in this
> direction: Tweak tool does not care about nodes; Spiros use nodes but
> they are much less clumsy than bezier nodes and easier to move around

Beziers are clumsy, that's true. At this point I'd like to advertise my
patch [1] which introduces automatic maintained handles. I think such
nodes are even more intuitive than Spiro splines, and they still can be
mixed with normal smooth/cusp nodes in the same path.
> That sounds a bit like you could be saying the code that is
> the consumer of the 2geom lib would be doing something
> incorrectly, and not 2geom itself. Is that correct?
>
> That is what the issue has been looking like to me.

It is hard for a 2geom consumer to do this kind of thing wrong. Curves in paths are well protected and nigh impossible to change outside of 2geom. When changing or adding to a path outside of 2geom, 2geom always checks the continuity.

We had problems with all matrix transforms a while back, fixed by no longer inlining the operator*= method. I do not know the cause for the bug back then (and I think it only happened on Windows).
Maybe we have a similar problem now.
