So is anyone working on better IDE support for grails?  I just took a look at ruby on rails through netbeans and was quite blown away at how nice it was to do development with juby.

Would love to see something similar for grails...and would love to help development if someone is already working on it.

I am working with the Groovy on Grails plugin for IntelliJ, its not
perfect, but it is usable.

I reference the plugin from my blog: http://grailsframework.blogspot.com/

The support for Groovy and Grails in Intellij Idea should at least equally blow your mind.  My personal opinion is that it's the best IDE for a Dynamic language ever created and just getting better.  Also, it makes it almost completely seamless working with a mixed Java/Groovy project.  In addition, the Netbeans people have been putting resources into building a plugin although I didn't find it to be anywhere near the capabilities of intellij yet.  Eclipse has a plugin with some decent capabilities but it's a bit buggy.  But if you really want a good IDE there is no beating Intellij.

lacks of a very good open source/free IDE for Grails hinders its adoption. I hope the situation will improve in the future.

Yeah, I've used both Intellij and Eclipse plugin.....neither of them are very good compared to netbeans and ruby.  And Intellij is NOT worth a $500 license fee.

Hi,

Let's not start the 10 billionth 'my IDE is better than yours' discussion,
but please provide some arguments in the claims you make. I personally like
JetGroovy a lot, because of the refactoring support and the integration
between Java and Groovy.

So maybe you can make some points you currently miss in the IntelliJ and
Eclipse plugins, so maybe they can be added in future versions!

IntelliJ support for Groovy and Grails not good? Are you kidding me?

I know that you state that in your opinion it is not good *compared* to netbeans and ruby, but what are you missing then in IntelliJ?
Please give some aruguments and maybe the good folks at IDEA will pick it up and add it to the plugin.

Cheers,
Marcel

Ok, so we have established that Intellij supports groovy/grails and that there is plugin for eclipse but it is bugged.  So my next question is, is anymore actively working on the eclipse plugin...I would be interested in helping out because although it is said that Intellij has a nice plugin I just don't think it is worth paying $500 for it.  Same question applied to netbeans.

Actually, an IntelliJ IDEA license is only $249, student or teacher license is only $99.  With that said, the plugins for Eclipse, NetBeans, and I believe, JDeveloper are all being actively developed.

>  IntelliJ support for Groovy and Grails not good? Are you kidding me?

Oh, common !!!! Don't let me started:

- GSP support sucks (where is autocomplete for tags?) - text
highlighting is not much of a support nowadays.
- Domain object's auto-completion is non existent and so is most other
artifacts' autocompletion
- Refactoring is almost non-existent.

Not groovy/grails related but annoys the hell out of me:
- The IDEA's porject layout is the least intuitive ever - I would say
really stupid. I am still looking for ways to move thongs from source
folder to another source folder. (Just dragging does not work).
- How do you create a linked folder in the project?
- It takes forever to figure out how to check things into SVN.
- Copy/Paste between idea and OS file does not work.

....

The list of irritations goes on. I am not sure why all of you IDEA
lovers out there think it is the best IDE ... I think it sucks big
time.

IDEA is the best we got - it does not mean it is any good.

If big heavy IDE's are not your bag, and you want to try something a
little more nimble (and are on a Mac), have a look at TextMate <http://macromates.com
 >. It has pretty decent support for Groovy and Grails.

Disclaimer: I look after the Groovy and Grails support.

I am happily developing using MyEclipseIDE + Eclipse Groovy Plugin. Groovy support in Eclipse does not suck. Then again, My most valued feature in an IDE is syntax highlighting.

The things that would make me even more productive would be:

  - Graphical webflow editor
  - Graphical form editing for GSP pages

Features that would blow me away, would be :

  - Graphical editing / layout support for the gwt-extjs Plugin
  - Support for graphically binding gwt-extjs controls to domains or "datasets"
  - In case it's not obvious where I'm going with the above,
it's a RAD environment akin to Delphi/C++ Builder for Rich Internet Apps.

I think the Groovy Eclipse guys have done a great job until now, and the latest speed improvements have made me a very happy coder indeed. Keep up the good work guys! :)

There is auto completion for tags in the latest 1.5 release

True.

Err? JetGroovy has the most complete refactoring support of any
dynamic language IDE I've seen. Rename, extract method/variable etc.
its all there and it works from Groovy->Java->Groovy

This is a matter of religion. To me when I move things i think of F6
in IntelliJ using the mouse is not my thing

Why would you need this?

Intellij's version control support puts pretty much every other IDEs
to shame. I'm still astounded at how poor the Eclipse SVN plugins are

Depends how you work with a project, but I rarely need this feature
