Some javascript/style in this post has been disabled (why?)

I am recording a record, using an ion iTT USB turntable. I am using Audacity version 1.4; which came with the turntable. I can play through to my speakers while recording. I can play back after recording; so I know the computer is receiving and recording.

However, the Audio tracks show no waveform – just a flat line; which makes it difficult to separate & label the songs.

How do I get the program to display the waveform on the audio tracks?

Steve

Audacity "1.4" does not exist yet but is the version of the Ion installation CD
that you have. The current Audacity version is 1.2.6 (stable) which we would
recommend that you upgrade to here:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

If you can play back your recording in Audacity after making it and it sounds
fine then you must have a blue waveform like this:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/onlinehelp-1.2/track_audio.htm

or else you have accidentally silenced it with Edit > Silence after you recorded
it. Try using Edit > Undo to undo your editing actions to see if you can get
your waveform back. You can use Edit > Redo to redo the actions. Normally
you would expect to see a waveform as in the image above and a flat line
between the songs which would make the area between them easy to spot.
If all you can see is a flat line then you should not be able to hear anything
when you press spacebar to play the track.

If that does not help, could you post an image on the internet somewhere
of what you are seeing on the Audacity screen?

If you have not already seen it, we have a tutorial here on splitting long
recordings into separate tracks:

There is no such thing as audacity 1.4. 1.4 is the version number of the
CD produced by Ion, and probably contains an out-of-date version of
audacity. We recommend you obtain an up to date version of audacity 1.26
from our website to avoid problems:
  http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

You can always check what version of audacity you have under Help >
About.

If the recording is being played back from the audacity project, then
the waveform will be displayed. However it is possible that the
recording is so feint that it is not visible on the display, but can
still be heard with the output volume set high enough.

To check if this is the case, select the entire track (CTRL + A) and
then use Effects > Amplify. If the value in the "Amplification (dB)" box
is large (<10) and positive, then your recording is indeed quiet.

You can either click OK to raise the level up and make the waveform
visible, or try and re-record at a higher level.

The problem with amplifying within audacity is that noise and other
problems can be amplified with the audio, reducing the quality. There
should be a knob underneath the turntable which can be used to adjust
the level which is recorded into audacity. Try to adjust this until the
waveform nearly but not completely fills the track (there are however
many reports that this does not work at all).

Also, make sure that the phono leads from the turntable are not touching
anything metal that might short them out and prevent the recording being
made.
