How are ldap users authorized in Linux?

Hi

I'm trying to get pam_ldap working on my SLES 9 system.  I've found the /usr/share/doc/package/pam_ldap directory, and have read the text files therein.  But I haven't found a document that explains how a user in LDAP gets authorized on the Linux system.  Said another way, what uid/gid/privileges, etc. does the LDAP user get on Linux?
