Hi Ronald,

> thank you Dave !
> that tip worked. Should have been that clever myself. DUH !
> without the wifi board it shows output and I can login to it !
>
> I guess my first task now is to find a pre-built and proven image "+ wifi",
> and
> put it on the gumstix. then try again with the wifiboard installed.

Actually, if you get console output with the console-vx + gumstix and
all you do is add the wifi board and then you get no console output,
then you've got a bad wifi board and you'll need to RMA it.

> ps: you're into Rov's aren't you ? I plan to build this thing into a model
> submarine,
> to play with telemetry, sound and video. sort of a phase-B of the project.
> Currently
a Makefile designed to work as part fo the kernel build, and not
trying to call gcc yourself. For example, the above looks like you're
using a user-mode makefile to try and compile kernel sources, which
won't work.

The makefile included with gpio-event have two Makefiles wrapped into
one. When you do

make kernel-module

it then does the appropriate invocation of make to build the kernel
module using the kernel build system:

kernel-module:
        $(MAKE) -C $(KERNELDIR) M=$(PWD) ARCH=arm
CROSS_COMPILE=$(CROSS_COMPILE) modules

and the kernel side of the Makefile consists of just one line:

obj-m := gpio-event-drv.o

> I have included the header file for the interrupt i.e. <linux/interrupt.h>.
> Before it could not recognize "IRQF_TRIGGER_RISING". What should I do with
> the variables "irq" and "dev_id" in the gpio_irq call? As in your codes in
> gpio-event-drv.c, I used the term (void)irq. Is this ok?

Casting to void tells the compiler you're not going to use the
variables and eliminates the "unused argument" warnings.

Actually, loading directly to a3f00000 is probably a bad thing since
that's where the copy of the 1.1.4 version of u-boot is running from.

You should be able to load it to a2000000 and then do
go a2000000

to start executing it. It should then relocate itself to a3f00000 and execute.

The above is for the connex. If it doesn't run, then I wouldn't
program it into 0.
My connex currently has 1.2.0 on it, and I did the following successfully:

cp.b 0 a2000000 40000
go a2000000

and I was also able to download the 1161 bootloader (1.1.4) to
a2000000 and run it.

I think something different needs to be done on the verdex, since some
versions of the verdex u-boot run from a3f00000 and some run from
5c000000

Hi Ronald,

I just bought and got a verdex with wifi-EU and console-vx.

I assembled them, connected to serial with the crosscable I ordered
and powered up.

two amber lights light up (on console vx and on wifi-EU).
No output to be seen on the serial at all. totally nothing.
But I just setup Ubuntu as build system, so I have no absolute proof
that the serial does work at all (I have no other serial device laying
around to test with)
nevertheless, kermit is not complaining. and while /dev/ttyS0 works,
ttyS1 does not.
so, it should be the right port on my PC I connect to.

Did you get the null-modem serial cable? IIRC, the ones with a green
end on them are straight through, and the ones with a gray end on them
are null-modem.

I have a few questions :
- in general, how does the boot sequence look like ?

Something like this:
<http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.distributions.gumstix.general/38996>

- should there be a led burning on the verdex itself ?

No - there aren't any LEDs on the gumstix motherboards.

- should any led be green instead of amber ?

There are also LEDs for the link/activity on ethernet, and one for the
wifi, but I don't recall if they light up without the gumstix fully
booting or not.

- which of the three serial ports on the console-vx is actually the
console ?
( I tried all three...)

The middle one is the console.

Try booting it up with no Wifi card plugged in (i.e. just the verdex
and the console-vx).

thank you Dave !
that tip worked. Should have been that clever myself. DUH !
without the wifi board it shows output and I can login to it !

I guess my first task now is to find a pre-built and proven image "+
wifi", and
put it on the gumstix. then try again with the wifiboard installed.

I must say that I am a bit disappointed by a company that does not
bother to put the right software
on the configuration they sell, or at least inform you that you
should expect troubles...
But then again, this is my hobby ;-)
maybe I start adding to the wiki, as there is not nearly enough info
for newbies (methinks).

Regards,
Ronald

ps: you're into Rov's aren't you ? I plan to build this thing into a
model submarine,
to play with telemetry, sound and video. sort of a phase-B of the
project. Currently
still busy creating the hull though.

Subject: Re: [Gumstix-users] Interrupt service routine in gumstix

Hi Peck,

> I will greatly appreciate if anyone can enlighten me on how I can
implement
> an ISR on one of the GPIOs line on the gumstix. I am hoping to initiate an
> high priority interrupt whenever a trigger edge is detected on the GPIO
line

> (from GPIO(58) to GPIO (73)). I am using the function "gpio-event" (which
> has been developed by Dave Hylands) to detect the GPIO events.
>
>
>
> I have been advised by Dave to look at an example code in gpio-event-drv.c
> for hints on implementing such interrupts. I was also reading the archive
> and I found this:
> http://www.nabble.com/PXA270-Interrupt-Help-td16275103.html which directed
> me to the command "request_irq" to register an interrupt. Am I right to
> assume that all the gpio monitoring events have to done within the

interrupt
> dispatch function when the request_irq is called up. What I do not
> understand is the procedure to set up an interrupt properly, like having
the
> need to initialize the interrupt ID and stop all other interrupts and
> proceed the ISR by using "spin_lock_irqsave" and "free_irq". Also how
> should I define the gpio line number in IRQ_GPIO and device ID?

To register an irq for GPIO 58, for example, you would do:

static irqreturn_t gpio_irq( int irq, void *dev_id )
{
... Do stuff in response to IRQ ....
}

and you'd register it using:

request_irq( IRQ_GPIO( 58 ), gpio_irq, IRQF_TRIGGER_RISING, "MyName", NULL
);

All of the setup stuff which is mentioned in the link you sent is only
needed if you do "to the metal" PXA programming. When using linux,
linux already takes care of all of those details, and you just need to
call request_irq (which is exactly what gpio-event-drv.c does).

> I will greatly appreciate if anyone can direct me with some basic examples
> to set up the ISR to start with? In fact, I just need a simple ISR to
> execute a specific function (which then reads the gpio-events). Also does
> gumstix allows Non-Maskable Interrupts? Is any of the GPIOs line
> configurable to NMI? I assume that it will set the GPIO line to the
highest
> priority, because I am hoping to detect the GPIO trigger pulses at a
> relatively high rate.

If you're trying to integrate this with gpio-event functionality, then
you should just modify the gpio_event_irq function that exists in
gpio-event-drv.c

I don't believe that there are NMIs on the ARM.

Hi Peck,

> I will greatly appreciate if anyone can enlighten me on how I can implement
> an ISR on one of the GPIOs line on the gumstix. I am hoping to initiate an
> high priority interrupt whenever a trigger edge is detected on the GPIO line
> (from GPIO(58) to GPIO (73)). I am using the function "gpio-event" (which
> has been developed by Dave Hylands) to detect the GPIO events.
>
>
>
> I have been advised by Dave to look at an example code in gpio-event-drv.c
> for hints on implementing such interrupts. I was also reading the archive
> and I found this:
> http://www.nabble.com/PXA270-Interrupt-Help-td16275103.html which directed
> me to the command "request_irq" to register an interrupt. Am I right to
> assume that all the gpio monitoring events have to done within the interrupt
> dispatch function when the request_irq is called up. What I do not
> understand is the procedure to set up an interrupt properly, like having the
> need to initialize the interrupt ID and stop all other interrupts and
> proceed the ISR by using "spin_lock_irqsave" and "free_irq". Also how
> should I define the gpio line number in IRQ_GPIO and device ID?

To register an irq for GPIO 58, for example, you would do:

static irqreturn_t gpio_irq( int irq, void *dev_id )
{
... Do stuff in response to IRQ ....
}

and you'd register it using:

request_irq( IRQ_GPIO( 58 ), gpio_irq, IRQF_TRIGGER_RISING, "MyName", NULL );

I assume that it will set the GPIO line to the highest
> priority, because I am hoping to detect the GPIO trigger pulses at a
> relatively high rate.

If you're trying to integrate this with gpio-event functionality, then
you should just modify the gpio_event_irq function that exists in
gpio-event-drv.c

I don't believe that there are NMIs on the ARM.

#3 hit it on the head. I did a search on ebay for "USB ADC" and found a small board that will give me plenty of digital and analog IO over a USB connection. I plan to hook that up through a USB hub to the Breakout-vx.

I will look into the other GPS solution. I read your comment about extra circuitry on the GPSstix as needing more power, something I'm trying to minimize.

Responding to your points in reverse order:

1. I guess it should be feasible to use the ADCs on the GPSstix but it doesn't sound like "plug and play".

In this post http://www.nabble.com/patch-for-audiostix-UCB1400-ADC-access-via--proc-td15984339.html#a15984339 there is info from someone who has done it - but it looks far from simple!

2. With respect to the GPS, I was just making the point you didn't need the GPSstix (and all the additional circuitry) if all you want it for is the GPS unit itself. The one I mentioned comprises just the ublox module and a USB / serial converter - it's the same module as on the GPSstix though so is not in any way "better".

3. On the question of using a daughterboard to provide A/D (and also GPIO if you want), it sounds like you want a prebuilt solution if possible that needs minimum configuration. The robotics guys are probably the experts on this but there are a number of SOC solutions that come with a prebuilt board that you would just need to configure and connect up.

I personally like this one http://www.rev-ed.co.uk/picaxe/ but there are quite a few around. This is a PIC microcontroller with an onchip BASIC interpreter that is easily set up over USB and can "speak i2c". Depending on what version you get, they come with 1 to several 10 bit A /D converters, GPIO pins etc. If you get their board you won't need to produce your own, and they are a doddle to get up and running. The potential downside is the interpreter slows everything down quite a bit so they can't do very high speed - but I would guess speed is not that critical for your application. However this would get you a pre built device which you could get working in half an hour - and which could always be replaced later by a bespoke PIC or AtMega if you want / need the extra speed.

Hope this helps

That's almost there. I had figured worst case I would need to create a daughterboard for USB on the 24-pin flex and use Robostix for ADC, or create a daughterboard for ADC via Breakout-VX and use USB on the Breakout-VX as well. Do you know if there is a module that I could simply plug into the I2C interface that would come with multiple ADCs? I do need analog input and I'm trying to avoid custom PCB work as it is more expensive than COTS.

That is interesting about the USB GPS solution. I forgot to mention that the electronics will be inside of a pressure housing and break out through underwater connectors to the outside. I don't think the USB GPS would like being in salt water and it wouldn't get a signal inside the pressure housing (I don't think). I might be able to pot the unit in urethane much like I had intended for just the antenna. Then I would just need a 4 pin connector to get the USB signals back inside the pressure case. In any case, that's very close to the same situation I have now with the GPSstix.

I have read a bit about using the four ADCs on the UCB1400 on GPSstix. Searching this forum showed a few requests for this function but I don't recall seeing any success on the subject. Does anyone know if this can be done?

I think your problem here is you can't combine the cards with USB with the Robostix.

If you used the verdex, NetWifiMicroSD and breakout-vx, that would get you USB, Wifi, a writeable card, and lots of GPIOs together with a i2c interface. So your best bet might be to forget about the Robostix and either use a custom daughterboard with i2c A/D convertors on it (I believe there are lots of single chip such devices) or use i2c equipped sensors.

You don't need the GPSstix to get GPS, Conrad Electronics (for example) sell a USB GPS module based on the same ublox device as in the GPSstix.

I see you have successfully configured your system according to the gumstix networking HOWTO option 1. I have also configured my system in the same way and have made all the changes necessary to the hcid.conf and other bluetooth and network interface files as far as I've read, but since I was still not able to recognize my gumstix on my PC, I tried using DHCP (subnets) and have taken additional advice from ubuntu forums for setting up Ubuntu for networking with bluetooth devices.

It seems I am missing some steps in the server side configuration or in making the gumstix bluetooth visible/discoverable because they simply do not recongnize each other. How do I make sure the gumstix is visible? How do I set up the proper addresses for this network?Any help would be great.

One Solution to a Bluetooth Problem:
For those not able to get bluetooth device recognized on the gumstix, here maybe be one explanation:
After turning off lcd and touch screen in the preferences in gumstix-oe/user.collection directory files, and reflashing my gumstix, I forgot to turn on a MACHINE variable in user.collection that allows bluetooth function. I am fairly sure this was the problem since while working with multiple gumstix, those that were flashed with this variable turned on worked and the ones that didn't have the change made did not initialize its own BT device.

<quote author="jbchong">
Mark,

Thank you for your response. If possible can you tell me what specific revisions of OE and Buildroot you were able to get bluetooth working on? Currently, I'm have have a buildroot 1584 and I'm also using a prebuilt image of OE 309. What I essentially need to do is just have a bluetooth network of just the gumstix and one pc so perhaps your configuration would work for me. Also, out of curiosity, is there an advantage to using the NAP on the master instead of GN?

Thanks,
Justin
Sorry to here that you are having problems. I have Connex 400xm-bt
motherboards with pba31308 radioes and I have no problem getting a
bluetooth PAN setup. I have done this with both the "buildroot" and the
"OE" build environments.

When I use the buildroot environment (which uses bluez 2.24) I can get
one master (NAP) and upto 7 slaves (PANU's) to participate in the PAN.

When I use the OE environment (which uses bluez 3.24) I can get one
master (NAP) and one slave (PANU) to particpate in the PAN. (I am still
struggling with get more than one slave to be able to participate
successfully in the PAN).

In both of these cases my configuration is quite similar to what you
have identified. There is a HOWTO on the gumstix.net wiki:

   http://gumstix.net/wiki/index.php?title=Category:How_to_-_bluetooth).

My config is quite similar to the discussions regarding the
"Networking: pan access point" and "Networking: pan client" sections of
that HOWTO. My only difference is that I did not use DHCP. All of my
deveice have static IP addr'.

If this config. setup does not work for you, then perhaps there is
something else wrong with your boards.

Good luck
work.
I was able to again connect manually but it only stayed connected for
about
1 min and now still can't connect at all. Also, almost everything I
have read on this mailing list about bluetooth involves a verdex model.
I there any difference in how the module should be configured on the
basix model gumstix. By looking at the bluetooth chip on the board it
appears that I am using an infineon pba31308 so I seems to me that the
latest firmware should work based on the posts in the thread you
mentioned. Could this intermitent operation be a hardware issue? If
so, is there a way to test it to verify it?

Brian
<quote author="JPiskura">

Does anyone know if this can be done?

briany wrote:

Subject: [Gumstix-users] best way to get audio and LCD

I am wondering what is the best way for me to get audio (just output is what
I am concerned with) and an LCD.
If I use the consoleLCD16-vx, I have to write/find a driver to perform PWM
using a GPIO line for audio output and build a board to process that signal
and produce an audio signal.
However, if I use the audiostix2 board, I still have to do wiring for the
LCD. It seems to me that this would be much harder.
> You should be able to go directly to 1.2.0. I like to test a new
> u-boot first (by loading it into address A3F00000 (on the connex) or
>> sensitive Bluetooth chip, which only work with VERY old buildroot
>> versions (that's partly why I am stuck in r549).
>
> The newer u-boot should work just fine with the older buildroot.
> You'll just need to modify the bootargs and bootcmd
> thing to note though is that you'll have to upgrade u-boot to version
> 1.2.0 (you'll have version 1.1.4) before you can reflash a recently

I've been thinking of using it as a status monitor for both intra-vpn and extra-vpn applications so that whenever I have to check up on the status of a database, or production system, I can do so through the gumstix/samsung monitor/etc., in coordination with bluetooth DUN through my cellphone (I'm a QA guy/coder that basically has to keep up on this stuff, and since I spend my days in perl lately, writing admin tools, etc., gumstix seems like the perfect fit).
HI Steven,

>>> - which of the three serial ports on the console-vx is actually the
>>> console ?
>>>
>> The middle one is the console.
>
> What are the others mapped to? Just plain old serial ports in /dev?

The one in the corner is the STUART (/dev/ttyS2) and other one is
BTUART (/dev/ttyS1)
