Hello, all.  I'm the new ("acting," really, until we find a permanent)
system administrator for the Documentum system at Creighton University
in Omaha, NE.

I have some "rule of thumb" questions about Documentum:

   1. At the risk of asking too general a question, what is a "good"
configuration for Documentum?  I know this depends on the kind of
problem to be solved.  Our local IKON office spec'ed out and installed
the following, which was used successfully for a pilot project (for 6
campus departments) and now for production:

Server name - "app"
Manufacturer - VMWare
Physical or virtual? - Virtual
Operating system - Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2
Processor - Intel Xeon CPU 2.66 Ghz
Clock speed- 3.34 Ghz
RAM - 2.0 GB
Disk(s) - type - Compellent SAN
Disk(s) - boot-os - C - 14.9 GB/9.50 free
Disk(s) - data - D - 74.9 GB/46.50 free
NICs - 2 x virtual NICs
Database - NA

Server name - "web"
Manufacturer - VMWare
Physical or virtual? - Virtual
Operating system - Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition SP2
Processor - Intel Xeon CPU 3.33 Ghz
Clock speed - 3.34 Ghz
RAM - 2.0 GB
Disk(s) - type - Compellent SAN
Disk(s) - boot-os - C - 14.9 GB/9.54 free
Disk(s) - data - D - 19.9 GB/19.0 free
NICs - 2 x virtual NICs
Database - NA

Server name - "db"
Manufacturer - IBM System x3550 7978
Physical or virtual? - Physical
Operating system - Unknown (presumably Windows 2003 Standard Edition SP2)
Processor - 2 x Intel Dual-Core Xeon 5160 3.00 Ghz
Clock speed - Unknown
RAM - 2.0 GB
Disk(s) - type - 2 x IBM 73.4 GB 15k Hot-Swap 2.5" SAS SFF Hard Drives
Disk(s) - boot-os - Unknown (probably RAID, configuration unknown)
Disk(s) - data - Unknown (probably RAID, configuration unknown)
NICs - Emulex 4 GB Fiber Channel Dual-Port PCI-E HBA for IBM System x3550
Database - Unknown (presumably Microsoft SQL Server 2005, service pack
unknown)

Application software:
   Server
   Client(s) - Windows
   Client(s) - Web

Notes:
   1. The app and web servers use a Compellent SAN for their disk storage.
   2. The db server uses its own disk drives for storage.

What I'm interested in is "best practice."

   2. Conversely, what is "bad" configuration for a Documentum system?

   3. We have (get this) 1 or 2 users on this system, but we're about
to have upwards of 10 in a month, and 20 by the end of 2008.  Are
there any contention or concurrency issues to be aware of, especially
when several users build batches of files for import via flat-bed
scanners?

   4. Tuning - we still notice it takes 45 seconds to start up the
.NET version of ApplicationXtender for users on our campus network.
Does anyone have any best practices to share re/tuning Documentum on
the server and client sides for best performance?

   5. Finally, is there a national users group for Documentum or is
the focus on regional users groups?  Is there a users group, or some
section of a users group, for Documentum users in higher education?

Thank you in advance for your time and help,

Mark

Hi Mark,

I presume that you will be using Documentum v6 SP1
First of all by looking at no. of users that will be added in next few
months and no. of scanned documents (in few MBs per document I assume)

I recommend to ramp up the RAM memory resources on all the servers as
follows
1) app  = 4 GB
2) web = 4 GB
3) db  = 4 GB
Note : Because D6 SP1 requires higher memory resources other if you
would use 5.3 SP4 this configuration will do for proof of concept

User RAID 5 configuration on Content and Database server

Regarding Documentum tuning ...its recommended to check document /
load that is expected from scanners or users ...e.g. 50 documents /
day with size of 2 MB per document

There are several blogs / forums available for Documentum e.g.
http://powerlink.emc.com , contology.

I'm not aware of any educational or university level user group

Hope this helps
Cheers
Sandip

Also, do we want to include HA / DR site. If yes, then you have
tweak your enviornment/configuration.

I aggree to increase the RAM size too. It all depends on the number
of concurrent users vs user logins.

Also do you have FAST/Transformation services also?

cheers
