Installing GIMP without administrative privileges

When I use GIMP in public libraries, I use GIMP version 2.2.10.
I would like to use the current version, which, the last time I
checked, was 2.4.5. I have not figured out how to do so.

Gimp-2.2.10-i586-setup.exe, and its companion file
gtk+-2.8.9-setup-1.exe, allow you to install into a directory
of your own choosing. If I change the default and choose, e.g.,
c:\tmp, I can install the software without having administrative
privileges.

When I run Gimp-2.4.5-i686-setup.exe (there seems to be no
companion file for installing the Gtk+ software), the installation
program fails immediately, with an error message telling me that
I cannot install the software without administrative privileges.
Is there any way around that? If not, is this ever going to change?
I do not have administrative privileges in public libraries.

There is another problem, of lesser importance. It is an annoyance
but it is not an insurmountable obstacle. Gimp-2.2.10-i586-setup.exe
and gtk+-2.8.9-setup-1.exe are both under 10 megabytes in size.
I have mailed them, as attachments, to an electronic address that
provides an HTML interface. When I wish to use GIMP in a public
library, I use a web browser to download and execute those
attachments. In principle I could use the same technique to run
gimp-2.4.5-i686-setup.exe (if there were any point to running
it, which currently there is not). However, many mail carriers
impose a 10 megabyte limit in the size of a mail message, and
gimp-2.4.5-i686-setup.exe is more than 16 megabytes large,
presumably because it includes the gtk+ installation files
together with the gimp installation files. I did find one mail
carrier willing to accept messages larger than 10 megabytes in
size, so this is an annoyance rather than an insurmountable
obstacle, but it is still an annoyance. Are there versions of
the installation programs in which the gtk+ installation is
separate from the gimp installation?

Thank you in advance for your reply to these questions.

                        Jay F. Shachter
                        6424 North Whipple Street
                        Chicago IL 60645-4111

                             (1-773) 7613784

How to Compile a Gimp Plugin under Windows

Hello, I'd like to compile the sources of the DBP Gimp Plugin, under Windows.

Here the sources of DBP: http://members.ozemail.com.au/~hodsond/dbp.html

What I did so far:

Phase 1) Preparation of compiling environment

I downloaded the MinGW runtime, the GCC core and c++ tarballs w32api,
the binutils etc. from this page:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=2435

I installed them and added the bin folder to my environment PATH...

I also downloaded the GTK development pack from the GTK page, as well
as gimp-dev-2.4 from http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/downloads.html
and added their lib folder to my PATH...

Phase 2) Compiling...

I unzipped the dbp 1.1.8 sources and when I run mingw32-make (inside the sources folder) I get a
lot of errors, but first of I see some not found errors:

gui.h:23:21: gtk/gtk.h: No such file or directory

In file included from op.h:26,

from gui.h:26,

from dbp.cc:68:

gimpCall.h:25:26: libgimp/gimp.h: No such file or directory

gimpCall.h:26:28: libgimp/gimpui.h: No such file or directory

In file included from op.h:26,

from gui.h:26,

from dbp.cc:68:

So I copied the gtk, gdk, libgimp folders from the developments
packages in the dbp-1.1.8 sources folder and tried again to run mingw32-make but I still get a load of errors, so I'm thinking that before going on and loosing my entire day I could ask to some kind soul to help me, maybe to setup a correct Compiling Environment (or conrfigure the makefile, no idea how to do that) so that I don't need to copy the lib folders inside the dbp sources folder or doing other dirty tries...

If you think that cygwin is a better environment I will try that.

Just guide me step by step please, I'm a total beginner in compiling C applications.

Best regards,

Paolo

Of course you are correct my friend...the version is 2.4.6, not 2.6.

I did as you suggested, and found that the GIMP plugin directory was
selected incorrectly; since I only have one PS plugin I care about, it
worked perfectly after copying that folder and content to C:\Program
Files\GIMP-2.0\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\optikVerveLabs and eliminating
the incorrect path to Adobe.

Thanks!

> As example "... since upgrading to GIMP 2.6"...Is impossible update to
> 2.6 since is not yes released, you may have updated to 2.4.6 (or to
> 2.5.x but that is less luckily)
>
> Then you may better take a screenshoot or however copy the the error
> message.
> Even better may be start gimp from command line (is not complex only
> at least on my pc the prompt "gimp" do no work ,instead you have to
> write the path for gimp.exe ...and press enter, that is it ) and then
> copy the console output
>
> I will suggest to
> 1
> move away in a back up folder all your ps plugins but not pspi exe 2
> try again, you still get error messages?
> 3
> If not move back your ps plugin ... if not one by one at least in very
> little group each time reload gimp
>
> 4that will help to locate any incompatible plugin, that you should
> move permanently away
>
> A single incompatible ps plugin may not only issues a lot of
> disturbing warning but even crash pspi, if so no other PS plugin will
> work, even if they will remain visible in the menu
>
> (that happens seldom...but seldom if you have a dozen of PS plugin
>
> become probable if you have more then hundred
> and almost certain if you have even more )
>
> Anyway better if you
> >

Color profiles & color spaces -- assignment v. conversion?

I know just enough about colour management to get myself into trouble.

On Gimp 2.4.6, there are now some new options under the Image > Mode >
menu path, namely

@ Assign to Color Profile // Actually uses Little CMS (lcms)
@ Convert to Color Profile // Actually uses Little CMS (lcms)

@ Assign colorspace // Hmmm, should be 'Color Space' for niceness?
@ Convert colorspace // Likewise!

At the moment there are no Help topics nor topics on the User Manual
site for these menu options, so can some Photoshop, graphic arts, or
prepress guru assist with these queries:

@ What does *assigning* an image to a color profile do and what
effect does it have on colour management downstream?
@ How is *converting* an image to a color profile differ from
"assigning", and what effect does it have on colour management downstream?

How is assigning or converting a *color space* different from a
*colour profile*? The options appear to be the same as for color
profiles.

Are these two sets of lcms and Gimp dialogue alternative ways of
getting the same result on the image, or is one set changing the image
file and the other is actually doing something to the profile files
(aaaarrgghhhh!)?

For example, the image I am looking at has these options ...

Assign ICC Color Profile (Little CMS dialogue)
Current Color Profile: Adobe RGB (1998)
      Assign: [ Adobe RGB (1998) V ] // drop-down list

... but ...

   Assign colorspace (Gimp dialogue)
Current colorspace: None (use RGB workspace temporarily)
      New colorspace:
         (o) Unassign colorspace
         ( ) Workspace: Adobe RGB (1998)
         ( ) Profile: [ Not selected V ] // drop-down list

The conversion dialogues have these options ...

Convert to ICC Color Profile (Little CMS dialogue)
Current Color Profile: Adobe RGB (1998)
Convert to: [ RGB workspace (Adobe RGB (1998)) V ]
      Rendering intent: [ Perceptual V ]
      [] Black point compensation

... and ...

   Convert colorspace (Gimp dialogue)
Source colorspace: None (use RGB colorspace temporarily)
      Rendering intent: [ Perceptual V ]
         [ ] Use BPC compensation
      Destination colorspace:
         (o) Workspace: Adobe RGB (1998)
[ ] Flatten image to preserve appearance

Sure hope a developer is reading this list and can assist the puzzled
and the troubled!

Dear all.

I'm not sure what exactly has happened and at what point. I use gimp
3.4.6 (also previous version 3.4.5) along with windows xp x64. All was
working fine so far, though now GIMP crashes each time I try to create
a new image providing some customised resolution, e.g. 320x240. The
same happens when I attempt resize images or save.

The alleged module responsible for this is:
AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: icm32.dll

Now, I've reinstalled gimp from scratch and this doesn't help. Any
ideas ? It's very annoying cos I don't know whether there was some
corruption of system, or new incompatible updates or what ...

Cheers,
Peter.
I'm using a windows based computer & I have difficulty printing things
out in my Epson 4800 printer from GIMP (can't adjust for large paper
size, GIMPS print menu wants to change the resolution). I'm using (and
recommending) XnView as a workaround. Is there a better solution?
Thanks,

> I was looking around for GIMP brushes. And I found some. But I didn't
> download them. I was afraid to. Because it said that they were
> converted from Photoshop. So I was wondering if it is illegal to
> download them and use them.

That depends on the license of the original works (brushes). If
somebody has created some Photoshop brushes and made them available
for anybody to download without restriction, they hardly would object
if somebody else then converts the brushes to GIMP's format and
redistributes them. But if the brushes are (part of) a commercially
licensed product, then it very probably is illegal to redistribute
them even in their original form.
   > Delete the GIMP directory
