Help VC++: Unresolved external symbol _GTIFNew using libgeotiff

Hi All,

I'm new in this mail-list.

I have a problem when trying to use libgeotiff.

I use VC++ 6. After making a project, I add some header files, C/C++ source files and inc files to my project, not all files included in libgeotiff zip file.

They are :

Then I include header files in my project and add some code :

When I build the project, it result in linking error :

readGeoTiffDlg.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _GTIFNew
readGeoTiffDlg.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _XTIFFOpen
Debug/readGeoTiff.exe : fatal error LNK1120: 2 unresolved externals

I search in some forum, one say that it related to library which can not be found. I look back to my libgeotiff files, there is no lib file there.

Please anyone knows about this?

Jeskynar,

I added the TIFFRewriteDirectory() and it worked fine for me, but I'm using
libtiff4 (latest from cvs). What version of libtiff are you using?

I also found I had to make an effort to clear the existing tags if I wanted
to be able to replace existing geotiff tags properly (clearing existing tags
that aren't in the new .geo file). I have attached my modified version.

If you give me permission to distribute your code under the normal libtiff
license, I'll add applygeo in subversion.

Do you mean there is a GDAL utility or something in the API?

Below is my attempt an applygeo.c, but I haven't used the libgeotiff API
"with some care" because it doesn't appear to do anything! And if I add
a call to TIFFRewriteDirectory before XTIFFClose it crashes (assertion
tif_flags&0x80000 failed). Any ideas?

I believe the -a appends a new image to the existing TIFF file.

The listgeo and geotifcp cannot be used to reset the geotiff information
"in place" as things stand though this can be accomplished using the API
with some care. GDAL does this for instance.

It would be relatively easy to modify geotifcp to have a "reset geo tags
from metadata file, but do nothing else" option or perhaps write a small
new utility called "applygeo". However, I'm not likely to do so.

Is there a way of copying a projection from one GeoTIFF to another without completely rewriting the latter?

There seems to be a "-a (append)" option to newer versions of geotifcp but it is not documented and didn't do what I expected.

:Mercator projection in GeoTiff

Good Afternoon,

How can I define a Mercator_2SP projection in Geotiff?

For many years (as far as I can tell) we have produced a header with the
ProjCoordTransGeoKey set to CT_MERCATOR and both the ProjScaleAtNatOriginGeoKey tag (set to 1.0)

and the ProjStdParallel1GeoKey tag (set to the required Latitude) as parameters.

ListGeo records both these tags in the header, but in its interpretation section records it as a CT_Mercator projection with a ProjScaleAtNatOriginGeoKey of 1.000000. (No mention of ProjStdParallel1GeoKey).

We have successfully displayed this data correctly georeferenced (as we see it) in several viewers (CARIS HPD and Geomatica Freeview for example), but version 9.1.3 of ArcMap seems to ignore the standard parallel, and displays the data using Scale at Natural Origin.

I can see that the definition of the coordinate system is ambiguous and I have tried to amend the GEOTIFF header (using geotifcp) to remove the ProjScaleAtNatOriginGeoKey from the header. ListGeo now records the tags as I would wish, but still interprets it as a Mercator_1SP projection with a scale factor of 1.000000.

Is this expected behaviour? I can obviously calculate a corresponding scale factor for the Latitude of true scale, but this seems an unnatural way of defining a Mercator projection.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Clint,

Elevation is usually interpreted as "PixelIsPoint". There is usually an
overlap pixel; hence 1201, 3601. So for instance in dted and srtm with a
one degree cell with 1 arc post spacing you have a post on both
longitude and latitude lines. If it were area, it would edge to edge and
you would only have 3600 post for 1 arc second instead of 3601.

Hello,

I’m trying to understand the relationship between the model tie point (upper left corner of the geographic domain) and the raster space (PixelIsPoint vs. PixelIsArea) to ensure I am properly assigning geographic coordinates to the data points in the file. I am extracting elevation data (NED or SRTM) for preprocessing for another program.

If someone could verify my interpretation is correct…

Suppose:

* model tie point = (0, 0, 0, -112.0, 39.0, 0),

* raster type = PixelIsArea

* pixel scale = 1 arc-second in X and Y directions (0.000277777777777778, 0.000277777777777778, 0)

I interpret this to mean the upper left corner of the first pixel (0,0) is located at lon = -112.0 and lat = 39.0. However, the elevation for that first pixel, bound by points (0,0) and (1,1) is represented at the center of the pixel derived by adding 1/2 arc-second to the longitude and subtracting 1/2 arc-second to the latitude (i.e., adjust lat/lon to center of pixel).

Similarly, if the raster values for the model tie point were 0.5, 0.5, 0, this would mean that lat/lon supplied in the model tie point already represents the center of the pixel and are the coordinates for the first elevation.

In the original example above, if the raster type were PixelIsPoint, then the first elevation is represented by the coordinates specified in the model tie point (i.e, do not adjust the coordinates by 1/2 pixel). Harley,

The libgeotiff 1.2.5 release included support .csv files with the EPSG 6.17
definitions. I'm not sure if that includes your April 2008 definitions or
not. It might be the version before that.

Note that the .inc files with coordinate system names are from the original
geotiff specification and have not been updated since. I generally consider
them secondary to the .csv files.

Shift to WGS84 on two coordinate systems.

Dear geotiff developers and users,

The finnish "KKJ" coordinate system has got officially endorsed (JHS
153) values for the towgs84 parameter. These have been added to the
Proj.4 epsg file (4123, 2391-4, 3386-7). I guess these parameters should
be added to the gcs file of libgeotiff too?

Also, Proj.4, since version 4.6.0, requires explicit towgs84 parameters
to do datum transformations. As ETRS89 (epsg 4258 and several others -
ETRS89 is a widely used new European reference system, it is endorsed by
European Commission since 1999) does not have them, it causes programs
like ogr2ogr, when used with EPSG codes, to not work as well as they should.

ETRS89 is for practical purposes the same as WGS84. This statement is
backed by NIMA TR8530.2 (http://earthinfo.
nga.mil/GandG/publications/tr8350.2/tr8350_2.html). Thus the towgs
parameters for ETRS89 should be 0's. I guess the method code in gcs.csv
should also be changed to 9603, 6 or 7 since the current 6422 leads to
ignoring the towgs84 parameters at least in GDAL.

libgeotiff / geotiff migration

Folks,

I have moved libgeotiff from CVS at maptools.org to Subversion at osgeo.org,
and established a Trac instance as a bugtracker and primary website for
geotiff and libgeotiff. The new preferred url is:

http://geotiff.osgeo.org/

The other sites (geotiff.maptools.org and www.remotesensing.org/geotiff)
now redirect there. Currently a number of the documents are still in HTML
and referenced from the trac wiki on the old sites. If someone is interested
in converting the FAQ into track wiki style that would be appreciated. I'm
not too keen on doing this for the specification itself though, so it will
likely to continue to be referenced as it is now.

Let me know if anyone has questions or concerns.

Vertical Units?

Hello All,

I’m updating an application to read/process elevation data in GeoTIFF format. I’ve come across a couple data sources that supply this type of data in GeoTIFF format but omit specifying vertical unit of measure within the GeoTIFF file (VerticalUnitsGeoKey, 4099). It seem like a reasonable expection that a GeoTIFF file that stores elevation data would include this vital piece of information.

I’m curious from you who are veterans when it comes to working with GeoTIFF files, is this type of thing is common?

It seems the data are only as good as the supporting information that identifies and describes it. I’ve run into similar issues with other types of data where a widely used distributor omitted the projection parameters. Are these common issues you typically have to deal with when building custom applications that read/process GeoTIFF files?

I can also confirm libgeotiff 1.2.5 builds with GCC 4.3.1 under Debian
Linux. However, I get 3 warnings about breaking strict-aliasing
rules in:

geo_new.c:242
geo_write.c:135

and in geotiff_proj4.c:261 dfSemiMajor is reported as likely uninitialized.

Michael,

I looked into this, and couldn't see any obvious reason things would fail.
Possibly old libgeotiff headers are being picked up at compile time somehow?

What version of gcc are you using? I'm using 4.1.3 without even any warnings
on the above files.

I'm keen to get this fixed in CVS, so let me know if you find a solution. If
you can offer a temporary ssh logic I'd be willing to try and build it myself
on your system and work through the issue.

Mateusz,

Indeed. The release is actually 1.2.5. I obviously had GDAL versioning
on the brain as I wrote the email.

Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious in libgeotiff versioning but
I am confused seeing these numbers :-)

The Release is titled as 1.5.2 but the packages use 1.2.5
Looks like a typo, doesn't it?

NSG Profile of GeoTIFF

Hi,

The US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) is proposing a profile of GeoTIFF to be used within the National System for Geospatial-Intelligence (NSG). The intent is to have some standard format for imagery where a format such as NITF is too cumbersome. I have not been involved in this work, but being aware of it and in the interests of wide community review, I pass on these documents for any review and comment. Thanks to Frank for hosting these documents.

Bear in mind that this profile is meant to be simple. So, for example, for maximal interoperability there are limitations on coordinate systems. Also the profile is only intended for georectified data. If people have comments before August 13, they can be sent to
