You are absolutely correct. Ideally, we would keep trunk in a state where we could release it within a couple of weeks if necessary. Notice the key word "Ideally". That can't always be the case, and it doesn't happen to be the case now.

Narrative Web Repairs in Trunk

Hello,

I just noticed the concerns about Narrative Web. I apologize for a lack
of participation in the last many months, but you all know how life and
a paycheck can distract you from this project.

I sent a few messages to Rob G. Healey this morning regarding what needs
to be done. We will hopefully be able to work together and stabilize the
plugin without discarding the new features that Rob has been working on.

It does look like there is some work to be done to finish what has already
been started on NarrativeWeb.

After that, it would be interesting to see if we could come up with a
design that allowed Gramplets to be reused on the web (rather than copied
and forked). To use most of the Gramplets, you'd also probably want to
have the Quick Views, too.

However, at some point it will make more sense for the Gramps Python code
to be run dynamically on the server, rather than generating (and
regenerating) all of these pages to static html for every little change to
the data or style.

At that point, it might be useful to look at PHP GED View
http://www.phpgedview.net/ and see if it would be more useful to add our
web bits there, and simply export the GRAMPS database to their SQL format.

The various issues are documented in:

along with some test databases that can be used to compare the state of trunk and the gramps30 branch.

Refactoring and the addition of new features since gramps30 was branched has broken or removed some functionality present in the branch - which should not be the case. I would rather people working on NarrativeWeb in trunk work on bringing it into line with gramps30 first before embarking on adding more new features as judging from the number of bug reports we get, this plugin is important for a lot of users who will rely on functionality being present from release to release.

Hypothetically, if we were to make a stable release from trunk tomorrow, then I feel sure we would have a riot to deal with amongst NarrativeWeb users :)

I don't know of anyone who is working those features now. And I don't think anyone will disagree with including those features some day.

However... I did notice some dissension a while back about the current state of the narrative web plugin in trunk. Some people feel like it has taken a step backwards. One person even suggested that we revert recent changes that were made to it.

If I were you, I would make sure that people are happy with the current state before you attempt to make changes to it. It would be a shame to make some legitimate changes to the report, only to have it reverted back so that we can gain back the ground we lost.

I'm not perfectly clear on what concerns some people had. Hopefully they will pipe up and someone will step up to address those concerns.

Actually, this turns out quite trivial to hack, except for one case
where only the first name is used.

My name format is

Joseph Jack William Averell (Joe) Dalton

The first name is 'Joseph Jack William Averell' but I would like to
have 'Joseph Jack William Averell (Joe)'.

How can this be achieved?

It suffices to open the verify.glade file with recent Glade, going to the verify_settings part, opening all the spin buttons in the property editor, and resaving. with page size =0 , see http://library.gnome.org/devel/gtk/2.14/GtkAdjustment.html#GtkAdjustment--page-size

Can you do that and test? A spin button has no page size, so was wrong to put a value there.

A patched version of enchant is ready for an NMU upload. It is just
waiting for testing from one of the Debian users bitten by the
