GIMP 2.4.4 crashes constantlySince I downloaded 2.4.4 a month or so ago I've seen many mysterious
crashes. During text editing, during standard filter usage, and especially during Script-fu usage, where it's roll your dice as to whether it works or not. I've excellent memory structure; I use XP Professional, and I'm very knowledgeable about PC functionality. There are no physical reasons, memory or hardware wise, for this well-documented series of crashes to occur. I think 2.4.4 is a step level down in reliability from previous versions. Is there a way to revert to the earlier (less buggy) version? |

Is there a way to revert to the earlier (less buggy) version? I can't tell about the mysterious crashes you encounter : we have been looking for explanations to build GIMP WIN , but couldn't find any : doesn't the GPL license makes obligation to the GIMP development staff to educate us on the way to build it ? You can download the previous releases from the http://gimp-win.source.forge.net Releases page. > I can't tell about the mysterious crashes > you encounter : we have been looking for explanations to build > GIMP WIN , but couldn't find any : doesn't the GPL license > makes obligation to the GIMP development staff to > educate us on the way to build it ? There is documentation about how to build it, easily found by doing a straight-forward google query like "gimp build windows". The hard part is getting a build environment together *and* to be able to maintain it (this is out of the scope of most, if not even all tutorials about this). The build itself is the default configure && make // make install. BTW, I'm usually unable to reproduce the more weird problems, both with the installer versions and my own builds. You can find these on SourceForge's project page (they're intentionally missing from gimp-win.sourceforge.net pages because I was getting too many "what to do with .c files?"-type questions when they were there). -- < Jernej Simončič >< http://deepthought.ena.si/ > < Contact address: >< jernej simoncic at isg si > |

"development staff"...that sounds awfully corporate. You do know that GIMP is developed actively by maybe half a dozen people at this moment, in their spare time, do you? And those working on Windows-specific issues are even fewer. The GNU licenses only require the sources to be available on the same media (or from the same distribution site) as binaries. (Or a written offer to provide the sources.) There is no requirement to provide free education or technical support. That said, there is a wiki page about it, http://wiki.gimp.org/gimp/HowToCompileGimp/MicrosoftWindows . Start with that. The more people that can build GIMP themselves the better. GIMP needs more developers. And it is a wiki, so feel free to improve it. The above page is about using the GNU toolchain ("mingw"). That is what is used to build the GIMP in the official installer. It is also possible to use Microsoft's toolchain to build GIMP, if you prefer. I don't think anybody has written up any instructions for that. Ask the GIMPVS guy? You might also find some useful tricks on the page http://www.go-evolution.org/Building_Evolution_on_Windows . But that page is not GIMP-related, so you must understand yourself what is relevant for GIMP and what is not. If you ask specific technical questions on the gimp-developer mailing list or in the #gimp channel on IRC (irc.gimp.org) (and not just complain in general that you don't understand what to do), I for instance will be glad to answer your questions. Please be patient when waiting for somebody to reply. Please don't use this list for development questions. This is after all the *users* list. --tml |

Oh we are all aware that , say ... , Cygwin developpers do this in their spare time. Thanks for your advices. Serge |

Re: GIMP 2.4.4 crashes constantlySearch archives of this group for GimpVS - its another build using
different tools than the "standard" gimpwin. At least a couple of crashes for which bug reports were filed that I was able to replicate on my system (WinXP Sp2 - Gimp 2.4.4) did NOT manifest when I tried the same thing on the GimpVS 2008 install. Of course there may be other problems with GimpVS that aren't manifest with the standard. YMMV Regards ...
