Re: G2One bought by SpringSource?Congratulations!
I wonder what does this mean: " Will you introduce maintenance policies like the ones recently unveiled for Spring? SpringSource always tries to strike a balance between keeping productivity enhancing projects available to the community as broadly as possible and funding the development of new innovations for the projects. Thoughtful and practical policies are part of trying to find such as balance and SpringSource plans to engage with the Groovy and Grails users and community should such policies need to be implemented. More specifically, we anticipate that there will be no need to introduce a policy for Groovy, but since future releases of Grails are likely to be delivered alongside releases of Spring, if a policy is introduced SpringSource will work closely with the community to do what makes sense " This sounds a bit vague. Hi Alex, What is means is that there are no plans to introduce a maintenance policy right now, but that we haven't ruled it on the future. If it were to happen we would work with the community to find the best balance, which is what SpringSource did for Spring. Although the initial maintenance policy announced was flawed they addressed it and provided a solution that made everyone happy. Re: G2One bought by SpringSource?a bit OT. From Rod's blog: """Groovy has unique benefits as a dynamic language on the Java platform. It's the only dynamic language that can compile directly to Java .class files; it's the only language that can be used mixed seamlessly with Java; it's currently the only language that can process Java annotations, which are becoming central to modern use of Java; and it has a natural migration path from Java, rather than calling for a big, risky leap of faith. It's also a promising language for implementing DSLs—an increasingly important issue. We're not alone in our excitement about Groovy and Grails. Over the last year, Grails has enjoyed explosive growth in its community. Downloads have increased 10x, from around 7K/month to around 70K, as tens of thousands of developers see for themselves the benefits of programming in Grails. Developers are the toughest (and best qualified) judges of technologies, and they are showing a remarkable degree of enthusiasm, with the Grails community now one of the largest in Java-based technologies.""" JRuby cannot compile to bytecode? re. Grails developers, "tens of thousands"... he meant "see the benefits" but not necessarily "doing development in"? :-) anyway, i believe both Groovy and Grails will get better with the deal. regards, mingfai On Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 7:16 PM, Guillaume Laforge <glaforge@...> wrote: Only a bright future :-) |

Rod is referring to Java's class format, yes JRuby compiles to byte code, but it doesn't compile to the Java language's representation of a class. Try referencing a JRuby class from Java, you'll need to jump through several hoops to do so. Groovy compiles to the same class file format as Java and has a joint compiler, so there are much fewer integration issues between Java and Groovy. > > re. Grails developers, "tens of thousands"... he meant "see the benefits" > but not necessarily "doing development in"? :-) It is hard to put a number on that, but you have to assume given that tens of thousands of people are downloading Grails each month that at least a portion of those are doing development in it ;-) Cheers > > anyway, i believe both Groovy and Grails will get better with the deal. > > regards, > mingfai > > > > > > On Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 7:16 PM, Guillaume Laforge <glaforge@...> > wrote: >> >> Only a bright future :-) >> >> More thoughts about what it brings here: >> >> http://graemerocher.blogspot.com/2008/11/groovy-and-grails-join-spring-family.html >> And here: >> http://glaforge.free.fr/weblog/index.php?itemid=259 >> >> On Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 9:21 AM, Ali M. <tclwarrior@...> wrote: >> > So what does this mean to the future of Groovy and Grails? >> > >> > Regards, >> > Ali >> > >> > On Tue, Nov 11, 2008 at 10:13 AM, Jason Morris >> > <jason.morris@...> wrote: >> >> Am I the first one to spot this? >> >> http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/11/11/springsource_g21/ >> >> >> >> Congratulations to Graeme and the guys, you have worked really hard to >> >> produce a great product, and I hope that your efforts have paid off :) >> >> >> >> Jason >> >> >> >> >> > >> > --------------------------------------------------------------------- >> > To unsubscribe from this list, please visit: >> > >> > http://xircles.codehaus.org/manage_email >> > >> > >> > >> >> >> >> -- >> Guillaume Laforge >> Groovy Project Manager >> G2One, Inc.
