Fwd: [services-wg] usage scenarios

Hello OMIS members.  Welcome back from Thanksgiving break (those of you
in the U.S.).   I hope you are freshly fortified for considering GENI
OMIS topics.  As you may recall, one of the elements of our working
group charter is operational use cases.  The substrate group is also
discussing use cases, which you might be interested in reading and
commenting on.  As we've discussed before, there is some overlap
between our working groups, and we will be meeting jointly at the next
GENI Engineering Conference to discuss overlapping topics.  Please
comment to both lists if you have things to add or discuss in this
area.

Another area of overlap is monitoring and data collection.  Perhaps
some of the folks in OMIS with some experience in this area would like
to send  some important  operational monitoring and data collection
requirements for the list?  I think Jim Williams message to this list
from Oct 16 brings up a lot of important points, as did the discussions
at the GENI Engineering meeting, but I know we've only started to
scratch the surface.  What do you thing GENI operations will need to
monitor and manage a network of many networks, each with their own
operations groups?  What would you absolutely need to see if your GENI
alarm went off at 3AM?  How could you avoid having a GENI alarm?

Finally, the first GENI solicitation is coming out this month, and
operations will be a focus area, as mentioned at the GENI engineering
conference.  It would be great if OMIS could give potential proposers a
concrete idea of what our biggest operations problems with current
networks are, and how we'd like our "ideal" networks to be managed.
These are the kinds of things we want GENI to address, and we need to
make sure the OMIS inputs are available soon to make that happen.  I've
been thinking that we could keep a "Top 10" list of operational issues
on the GENI Wiki by collecting the problems mentioned on the mailing
list and letting people add their yes/no to existing topics or add new
items to the Wiki.  Do you already know of similar existing lists we
should review?  Are there any other operation and management mailing
lists you would suggest we contact for more input?  Do you have ideas
for other ways for us to get the operational issues in front of
potential proposers?  Let's hear what you think.
