Is
it possible to build a machine to do archaeology? Will this machine be
capable of acting like a scientist? Will this machine be capable of
understanding how humans act, or how humans think they acted in the Past? This book tries to offer some possible
solutions to these questions and to investigate what does it means to solve
"automatically" archaeological problems.

The so called "intelligent" machines incite
instinctive fear and anger by resembling ancestral threats -a rival for our
social position as more or less respected specialists. But robots are here,
around us. So, why to have fear of a machine classifying a prehistoric tool and
deciding "intelligently" its origin, function and/or chronology? In other
scientific domains the performance of humans at a particular task has been used
to design intelligent computer programs that can do the same task in the same
manner (and as well). Consequently, the design of an automated archaeologist
should not be considered a mere science fiction tale. It is a technological
reality.

I have tried to create an analogy with an
"intelligent" machine, to understand the way we, archaeologists, think. If a
computer can be programmed to perform human-like tasks it will offer a "model"
of the human activity that is less open to argument than the empirical
explanations that are normal in philosophical debates.

The book introduces the reader to the
fascinating world of Artificial Intelligence theory, techniques and technology,
and how a new archaeology will be possible if we arrive to integrate the very best from "natural" intelligence and
from "artificial" processing.

TOPICS

Surely open is a founding principle of science? IP issues aside, a scientific "discovery" must be founded on reproducible experiments and the results of the experiments so far carried in out in testing the theory. Always been the weak point in archaeology's science armour, reproducibility. And come to think of it, providing the raw results of the work already done is not so popular either :)

Quantitative Archaeology Wiki: new Translation feature

Hi all,
last week I took some time to add a new feature to the Quantitative
Archaeology Wiki, namely the Translation plugin. This allows for easy
translation of the existing content while preserving the existing page
names and structure. Just use the translation toolbar at top-right on
each page, following the guidelines at
http://wiki.iosa.it/wiki:translation

For now I have added the following languages: German (de), Spanish (es),
French (fr) and Italian (it). If you think you need more languages, just
let me know.

I know there aren't many contributions to the wiki but the number of
readers is always increasing so maybe translating some of the pages
could be useful for making content more available.

Best regards,

Stefano
> this e-mail is to inform you about a new software project that I started
> writing recently. The project is called Total Open Station. From the
> README:
>
> """
> I started writing this program for making it easier to manage different
> models of total stations in a GNU/Linux environment. However, I try to
> develop following standards, so porting to Windows or Mac shouldn't be
> difficult.
>
> Every model has its own quirks. So, I decided to use a modular
> structure, that is based on an abstract interface. Each time a new model
> is added to the program, you create a new instance of this base class,
> with all needed data.
> """
>
> introduction to R, a detailed introduction to the 'spatstat' package,
> and
>
> https://answers.launchpad.net/openarchaeologygsoc/+question/27275
>
> Are you willing/available for mentoring? And, most important: how
> many
> different models of total station can you provide? :-)
>
> For now I have no projects for a GUI and I'll focus on:
> 1. serial connection parameters and communication
> 2. different data formats and data retrieval
>
> It's going to be modular enough to allow different kinds of output:
> DXF,
> GML, KML, GeoJSON... which other features would be a must for you?
>
> Best,
>
> """
> I started writing this program for making it easier to manage
> different
> models of total stations in a GNU/Linux environment. However, I try
> to
> develop following standards, so porting to Windows or Mac shouldn't
> be
> difficult.
>
> Every model has its own quirks. So, I decided to use a modular
> structure, that is based on an abstract interface. Each time a new
> model
> is added to the program, you create a new instance of this base
> class,
I'm sorry for the silence of the mailing list in the last months.
However, feel free to use this mailing list to exchange information as
> A full set of course notes on
>
> The course is based on the package 'spatstat'. It includes a brief
> introduction to R, a detailed introduction to the 'spatstat' package,
> and
> a discussion of statistical methodology.
con le edizioni precedenti (Grosseto 2006 -
http://www.archeogr.unisi.it/asiaa/open/, Genova 2007 -
sui vantaggi dell'uso di tali applicativi in archeologia;
comunicazione e lo scambio del dato archeologico;
c. problematiche legislative e culturali relative alla libera circolazione
dei dati;

A tale scopo è sufficiente

www.archeologia.unipd.it/workshop08/
oppure scrivendo a: workshop.archeologiaos@...

Con preghiera di massima diffusione,

il comitato scientifico:

Some days ago, the Science Commons initiative published this first
version of their memo (think of this like a sort of RFC) named "Protocol
for Implementing Open Access Data". It's not a document describing a
technical internet standard, but rather gives the minimum requirements
for releasing and distributing data and databases as Open Access, as
defined by the Open Knowledge Definition and the Budapest Declaration on
Open Access.

http://sciencecommons.org/projects/publishing/open-access-data-protocol/

It shouldn't be too hard to adapt this document to fit the need of
archaeologists who are interested in sharing their data - a recurrent
issue at least in some countries, where the legal status of
archaeological data is quite unclear.

Ciao a tutti.
http://del.icio.us/tag/qmdaa.

For not italian:

Dear all,
I want to point out two interesting sites:
1. for quantitative methods in archeology (http://www.antiqui.it/)
2. for an example of archeological data sharing (
