Fortress installation notes

Hi,

I'm doing my first fortress installation and, as I was working through
it I came up with these comments I figured the powers that be might
like to see:

1) I'm installing FC5 under my webroot.  So, I downloaded from
http://www.daemon.com.au/builds/beta/, extracted to /farcry under my
webroot and browsed to http://whatever/farcry and got an unfriendly
error.  I assumed the error was due to me having a mapping for Farcry
4 already, but thankfully Jeff Coughlin caught me first and pointed
out I needed to browse to /farcry/core/webtop/install.  It would be
really nice if the system could check if I'm installed and redirect me
to the installer if I'm not.

2) On step 3 of the installer it prompts me to select a skeleton.  The
only option in the drop down is "Mollio (Unsupported)".  I tried not
picking anything and was told I had to select something.  So, my only
choice is something that's not supported.

3) Step 4 tells me I can select plugins beyond what's in my
skeleton... but there are no choices.

4) When running the installer it died because, for some reason, it
decided to try to look for files under the farcry 4 application.

Can Farcry 4 and 5 not coexist next to each other?

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

Did you remove the farcry mapping in CF?
That needs to be done for farcry 5

If there are no projects created, and you browse to /farcry
you should see a page that says as much and gives you a link to the installer Page
 - you dont get that page?

Not sure way it says Molio is unsupported - feels like it is an old version to me

I downloaded from Subversion yesterday and install successfully
    http://svn1.cvsdude.com/modius/farcry/packages/mollio/trunk

This gives you everything you need - core / plugins / installer / projects / skeleton
Which is probably what is used to create the build zip,
But if you have time (and bandwidth) might be worth a shot.

Sigh.  I don't want to remove my old FC mappings because they're
required for another app.... I could create a new CF instance, if the
instance manager worked in CF 8.0.1 on Leopard.

Looks like I'm up the crick for now.

.... then again, I wonder if a per-application-mapping would make a
diff.....

Good idea on the application mapping in CF8
Please let us know if that does the trick.

If you're using a development setup where its ok to have FarCry 4 OR 5 running as needed you can add a /farcry/core mapping and just update that depending on what you're working on. CF does need to be restarted after the change though.

We originally intended to use application specific mappings, but discovered that there was an important difference between them and the mappings set up in the CF administrator. Basically: extends paths (and I think tag library paths) can only be defined once across the server. This means that the first application to claim to a mapping (e.g. farcry) would define it server wide. I think it's because of the difference between compile time paths and run time paths.

Tragically this is not possible as per-application-mappings are *not*
the same as CFIDE mappings.

Application Specific Mappings Are Horribly Broken
http://blog.daemon.com.au/go/blog-post/application-specific-mappings-are-horribly-broken

Unfortunately, you can only really run multiple FarCry versions
without restriction from 5.0 onwards and then only if you deploy
exclusively to the webroot as any CFIDE mapping takes precedence.

PS. Apparently BlueDragon application specific mappings work just like
CFIDE mappings, but I haven't tested them.  Incidentally, the release
candidate for Fortress works well on OpenBD.

Skeletons are effectively sample applications.  They can nominate
plugin requirements, sample data and a base project structure.  There
is a config that allows a developer to nominate the supported version
of the core framework. "Unsupported" simply means that the skeleton
has not been "certified" for use with that version.

We'll likely only bother to certify skeletons on official milestone
builds.  While we're still committing changes to the Fortress build
its a bit painful to keep updating the skeleton manifest ;)

Does everyone think "Unsupported" is the right label to show?  Or
should we be showing something like "Uncertified"?  Any other ideas?

All the best,

The RC build only ships with farcrycms and farcrygreybox plugins.
Essentially the installer searches the ./plugins directory for
suitable plugins and lists them.  The list of plugins available will
depend on what's been put on the server.  The final build will likely
ship with various open source plugins -- but if you want to try them
out now, you'll need to copy them into your ./plugins directory
manually.

A "plugin explorer" that lets you scan an online directory for
plugins, is high on our list of priorities for FarCry 5.1.

Matt said plugin need a manifest.cfc to be picked up by the installer

I found this out when the installer did not give me an option for farcryldap
Once I put the manifest in it did :-)
