I though this may be of interest to members of the list, sorry if it is
inappropriate.
A short while back I had a problem with my Back-UPS RS 500, in that, it
slowly discharged over time and would not charge even with no load
attached. I replaced the battery (thinking it had reached end of life)
and found it also exhibited the same symptoms.
After a little research I found the problem was a faulty capacitor in
the charging circuit of the UPS. The following web page -

(step-by-step) how to repair the UPS for only a few pence.
Please note, as suggested, I did use a higher rated capacitor - 22uF
100V 105C.
