First time user of GIMP,need help

[JOE-202]

Hi all,
    I just down loaded Gimp Yesterday. And I am in a bind;  I cannot
open any pics in GIMP!?   It is saying they are the wrong file type?  
All the pics I am trying to work on are JPEG.   What am I missing??
I would appreciate any help.

Check in preferences that the path to the plug-ins is set properly.
GIMP comes with some plug-ins that allow it to handle JPEG, and other
formats.
If it can't find those plug-ins,
then those formats that rely on one or more plug-ins will refuse to load.
