First Successful Commute

Well I finally got up the courage to use my Electruck for my work
commute. My one way commute is 11 miles and I can charge at work. I
had taken a number of trips between 9 and 30 miles over the past few
weeks to get a feel for what the truck can handle so I was pretty
confident getting to work would not be problematic.

The charge cycle at work only took 4 hours, and I had a well attended
show and tell at lunch. No windmill on wheels questions from my
coworkers, but I did get that one over the weekend. I had been
talking to people about about my mythical conversion project for the
3 years I've worked at this company so it was good to be able to put
to rest the friendly poking that my EV project was just a story I tell.

The trip home was basically as I expected. No problems until my
Nemesis; the hill atop which live. I've tried out some (but not yet
all) of the recommendations provided by Dave, Dave, Bob and Bill at
last weekends NEEAA meetings in New Haven which helped some, but I
still ended up slowing down to 25 MPH on the 50 MPH uphill road. At
least there are a good number of places I can pull over and let
people pass.

I think the EV will be my fair weather commute vehicle until I take
more precautions to keep my components dry in wet weather or the
police pull me over for driving to slow on the hill.

  Hi John;

WAy to go! Congrats! As you get used to E-commuting, it will actually
begin to save ya a bit of money? And the satisfaction of OOGA-ing while
passing gas stations!IF you have an Ooga horn? You can use the old system
perfected by 18 wheelers, and CSX freight trains:Go like HELL DOWN, and
coast up that killer, probably 400 amp, hill? I have one of those HERE, too!

And we can chalk up yet ANOTHER EV in our Fleet? Will N.E. become the
NEXT hotbed of EV activity?NOPW If Rob Kelley can get HIS controller issues
sorted out HE woulda been last week's entry?

I successfully use this strategy during other parts of my commute,
but the final hill is to long with a stoplight and 30 mph speed limit
(often with a officer on the far side of the intersection)

I'm out of commission again because by brother stopped by and
confirmed my breaks aren't dragging but one of my wheel bearings
needs replacing. The truck is on stands in the garage until I can get
the replacement part.

   Hi John;

The Wheel bearing Thing seems to have been covered pretty well. You buy
wheel bearings COMPLETE, both races! Ready to install. No mix an' Match here
as they are machined to go as a set! OK IF you have to get out of
Trashcanistan ahead of the Talaban,no Auto Zone around, but ya do it right ,
once behind the enermy lines! Getting the INSIDE race off can be a BITCH! I
ended up with a cutting torch and VERY carefully cutting it off WITHOUT
cutting the axle! I got good on torch work at RR museums, taking apart bolts
and nuts put on about the Spanish~American war era! Usually just heating the
damn thing cherry red and beating on it with chizel and hammer ya can get
them off. EVen a Burnz- a- matic MIGHT help ya here?Rabbit ones are a REAL
bitch! Prei, too!

Oh yes, when ya get your new bearings, pop for seals too! They ya sleep
good at nite KNOWING everything's new!Don't forget to tighten, Preload them,
too. IF the wheel has ANY wobble, yur too lose!Grab the tire and push an'
pull, don't be a wimp! Tighten up the Big nut enough to get all the
looseness out and it turns freely.THEN reinstall the kotter key.Smile! Yur
done! A sorta Kentucky windage kinda thing.Just did my Bucket Trux's
bearings, same deal!

I'd also recommend putting the new races in the freezer overnight before
installing and use a race drive to drive them in easy and straight.
