We always have that problem with the launchpad.net downloads. I can't
remember whether it was strictly due to https or whether there were
several layers of redirects that confused things also. I think we can
manually upload these files onto the master-mirror
(RangerRick?). Would be good if someone could talk to the launchpad
folks and get them to supply a download URL that works for bare-bones
clients.

Hmm, I just built it (still 10.5/intel) without any patch. I'll put it
into my exp dir. This version could also be built non-X.

Thanks everyone! Two people replied suggesting debfoster which I had
forgotten about and it does help. Koen suggested a script that I can't
find, but I appreciate the suggestion anyway.

Alexander's suggestion worked very well and while debfoster recovered a
couple of gigabytes, Alexander's short script recovered a couple of more
for me. (My only note here is that I also wanted to keep the newest
bash, but I simply reinstalled it.)

Beyond this, removing older versions of various developer packages and
other installers (which I tend to keep in case I need to revert) helped
recover around 10 more gigabytes.

This has been sufficient to let me run my vmware virtual machines which
is where I needed to be.

I'm not sure if "cleanup" defines .debs and sources for packages that
aren't installed, but are at the current version as obsolete or not.

You could give debfoster a try, it's in fink ... It will ask you about
whether you need each installed package (except for dependencies of
packages you already told you needed), and then remove unneeded ones.
First run might take you a few minutes, but that's worth it.

I use a script called "remove-nonbase.sh". It's somewhere on the cvs
repository, but I couldn't access that right now. But if you search
with Google, you'll get some links.

I think the problem may simply be that lftp does not support https and

protocols as lftp does, including ftp, http, fish, sftp. --I'm not
seeing https in the list.)

I'm having space management issues on my hard drive and so I'd like to
pare my fink packages down to a few essential packages, but I don't want
to have to remove all of /sw to do it.

Does someone have a convenient script that can help with this task (on
10.5.5 Intel)?

Also, will one of the cleanup commands remove uninstalled packages, or
will it only remove obsolete packages?

Barring this, I'll have to seriously consider moving it to an external
drive and I'm hoping to avoid that.

However, it seems like we keep getting incomplete builds out of it
(missing the actual "xpdf" program). If you don't need that it may
not matter.

After the xpdf package is installed, you can try to render the PDF
into a text file as in the original poster's reference:

I'm not at all sure whether the resulting file will easily be parsed
by Excel or not, though, as I've not tried this myself.

The page the the original poster referenced focused mainly on pdftotext.

I'm not sure if further mangling of the resulting text file would be
required for one's favorite spreadsheet to open it, though.

But note, the original message says something about "converting pdfs to
excel spreadsheets". xpdf doesn't do that. (I doubt there's any
program that does.) So if that's the goal, skip fink and go ask whoever
provided the pdf to send an excel file instead....

The method to get xpdf is not nearly that hard (the instructions you
describe sounds like it was gotten from several sources that didn't talk
to each other).

According to <http://pdb.finkproject.org/pdb/package.php/xpdf>, Fink
already has xpdf available for Panther, Tiger and Leopard, so all that
is needed is for you to install Fink (make sure you grabbed the correct
installer for your version of OS X from the Fink download page) and then
tell the Fink programs (either through the command line or with Fink
Commander if you prefer a graphical interface) to install XPDF.

After you install Fink through its installer, it'll ask you about
setting the Fink environment. Follow those instructions (usu something
about changes to the file .profile that it does automatically). Once
it's done, you can verify that this worked by opening
/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app and typing

which fink

If the output says /sw/bin/fink, then it's working as expected.

Now that Fink is set up and functional, you need to actually install
xpdf. You can either do it through Fink Commander or through Terminal.app.

In Fink Commander:
Binary Install > xpdf (the exact menu text may be different since I
don't have Fink Commander, but that's the gist of it. You want the
binary option since it's quicker and simpler).

OR

In Terminal.app:
sudo apt-get install xpdf
(and then type in your administrator password if it asks)

Either command will accomplish the same thing (download and install xpdf
as well as dependencies like freetype). After the process finishes, you
should have a working 'pdftotext' command that you run from Terminal.app
(unfortunately there is no graphical front end for it).

XPDF-3.02 seemed to me to be a walk in the park from reading the
special nice gentlemanly note

on how to do it on Macintosh OS-X-- 10.3 or OS-X -- 10.4 (panther and
tiger respectively).

Well, what was not told was long and dirty and complicated. I found out
that I had to have freetype 2.02 installed and then freetype has its
readmes spread out among the install notes and then I found out I had
to have GNU and not any GNU will do, only GNU 3.78 or higher.

To get GNU, I had to get FINK.

To get FINK to work, I had to download and further clutter my desk with
FILES AND FOLDERS that CAN NOT BE MOVED, so I got

FINK COMMANDER.

Well, given that I WAS just some fat AND happy retired man in
woodsy old Florida, it got frustrating.

I still do not have a simple or complex and cheap method of converting
spreadsheets in pdf to excel.

So, what I need and if there is one pure soul out there looking for a
sure ticket to heaven, they will tell me where it is, is a
super-idiot flow chart that tells me what I have to do and in what
order to get XPDF to work on Panther or Tiger or both.

Assume I have no background in these programs.

James, i'm a member of the OOo users listmail, and this is the first
i've heard of a fix. Is it contained in a new XQuartz release, or

To say that there will PPC releases is not the same as saying any
such will be available from the OpenOffice.org web site. AFAIK, the
last officially sanctioned build for PPC is 2.4.0 [in English]. I
know that PPC builds are available from http://ooopackages.good-
day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/ , but those are only release
candidates - there is no final release. In any case, OOo is
unwilling to even acknowledge the existence of this repository. Is
good-day Mr. Nakata's site, or does he have another?

I used to be the lead for testing of the Mac OS X version of OpenOffice.org, just as a background.

If you visit the site and look for the timeline, the release date for OpenOffice.org 3.0/StarOffice 10.0 was set almost six months ago. It has been a great deal of work to get to the release.

There should be an announcement of the release sometime this weekend, if not today.

Also, there will be PPC releases as well. There is a fine gentlemen, Mr. Maho Nakata, who has graciously been building PPC versions and submitting fixes to allow for the differences between the two.

As to your problem with X11 not working properly, I agree with A. Hansen that installing another program destroyed your xinitrc file. I've been using OpenOffice.org and building it for over three years. Never once did my X11 stop working. I've also been tracking the MacOSXforge XQuartz effort and not one of their builds caused problems with OpenOffice.org other than a known problem with MacOSX 10.5 and the startup script which has been fixed.

That's a matter for another thread; and a more specific error message
transcript. It may be a permissions problem; but it's hard to say.

Not directly.

It's remotely possible that the Fink "xinitrc" package, which is in
the dependency chain for kopete, might have altered how X11 starts
up and produced this issue. You might try removing xinitrc via "apt-
get remove" and see if your oo.org is happy.

Fink does _not_ (barring a broken package, which is not the case here)
modify your system area in any way.

DID try to install kopete, which, by the way, always gave an error trying to
connect to a folder and DCOP, and I never got it working. I wonder if that
apt-get install tried to install or modified my X11 configuration???

my machine--i.e. Oo.org worked after I installed Fink, and stopped after I
did something else, namely update to an unofficial X11 server from
macosxforge.org . There seems to be an incompatibility with that.

My workaround is to use the release candidate for the Aqua-based Openoffice
3. The other option is to launch the oo.org apps manually rather than
through the app bundle, e.g.

/Applications/OpenOffice.org\ 2.4.app/Contents/program/soffice.bin

I've recently installed the binary fink for OS X 10.5. Openoffice.org 2.4
WAS working (as installed from the dmg from the openoffice.org web site) and
now just comes up to the openoffice menu with no writer screen and a
perpetual spinning icon. In other words, there seems to be some
incompatibility between OOo and fink for 10.5. Has anyone else seen this
problem, and possibly have some solution?

oops, sorry, hadn't finished editing the message before I sent. I
followed the additional instructions in the log following the
"inconsistent dependencies" message and installed the offending
package (pango1-xft2-dev) separately using apt_get, and then tried
fink update-all again. It's still going... fingers crossed for a
error-free completion!

Not fishy, but very old, ca November 2005, xcode-2.2.1.
I would recommend to download a contemporary xcode - at least 2.4.1,
better 2.5 - from the Apple developer site.
