Hi everyone,

The GMOD meeting was a chance for the Architectural Working group to
present to the rest of GMOD what we have done and what we are working
on.  A summary of the meeting is on the wiki
http://gmod-dev.wikispaces.com/SummaryFall2005 It was a good opportunity to
discuss what we have done (even though many of the major contributors thus
far were not present).   One great piece of news came out of all of
this:  GMOD is redoing the website and has agreed to adopt our testing
recommendations into the official documentation for GMOD developers.   If
you have anything to add, (especially some code snippets to the Java
testing recommendation (http://gmod-dev.wikispaces.com/Testing)) please do
so soon.

Also, I had a conversation with Lincoln Stein after the meeting.  He is
very pleased with what we have done so far.  He wanted to know more about
the Java OR mapping tools IBatis and Hibernate.   If we can get some common
use cases implemented in each platform, we can see as a group the
differences between the two frameworks. He also suggested evaluating
different middleware designs for deciding on the middleware that GMOD will
officially use and maintain.  This is a huge task and will require greater
participation than we have had thus far, and the current task of deciding
on a Java OR layer is only one smaller part.   Since the decision affects
so many people, we will need to implement a method for evaluation and
voting on various solutions.  Lincoln suggested having one member from each
MOD/project have a vote and we try to get a 2/3 majority for various
decisions.

Anyway, that's enough to think about for now.  I encourage you to visit the
wiki to read the meeting summary and start thinking of ideas for
middleware. For Example:
         XML middleware layer  (XORT)
Object API over ORM database layer
         Object API over XML layer,

Thanks again for everyone's time.  The quality and credibility of a
recommendation depends on widespread participation.

Eric
