A course on database internals specializing in transactional design
will be taught by Pat O'Neil at the University of Massachusetts at
Boston, starting September 2, 2008 and ending December 19. The course
will take place from 4:00 PM to 5:15 PM.

= Abstract =
Database Internals (CS734) is a course that concentrates on transaction
processing as implemented on various commercial systems such as DB2 UDB,
ORACLE, and Microsoft SQL Server. Students are expected to have a DBA-
level understanding of database systems: SQL and some disk structure
design, including row layout and indexing, as well as a basic
understanding of Recovery (see the TEXT: Patrick O'Neil & Elizabeth
O'Neil, "Database: Principles, Programming and Performance," Morgan
Kaufmann, 2nd Ed., Chapters 7-10). CS734 is intended for students who
want to program at the system level at a database vendor or go for a PhD
in database systems with a practical orientation. Topics covered include
advanced serializability theory, implementation techniques for disk
buffering and indexing, and a heavy concentration in transactional
concurrency. The concurrency coverage includes a programming project in
2-phase locking, design of KVL and IM locking to avoid phantom
anomalies, isolation level considerations, Snapshot Isolation, with
recent advances, and additional material on SI Replication if there is
time.
