I want to make you all aware of something that has happened to me from posting on this forum.

I recently had someone take a post from this forum and quote it on two other websites (myspace and ratemyprofessor).  It was take completely out of context and written in such a way that it made me look very bad.  Fortunately, both websites removed the quote.  I am sure it came from the archives, those are public and any one can access what we have posted.

Someone who saw it on myspace emailed me.  A few days later it showed up on ratemyprofessor.

That's too bad.  I'm sure that can happen to any of us.

What I get is a TON of spam to the email address I use here.  Reason being that they post our full email addresses on the website archive for all the spam bots to easily gather.  Rule #1 for smart webmasters is to never put your email address on your site (or even in your code).

Really, I don't think this stuff should be archived at all for the above two reasons.

I agree with Karen. When I Google myself, my comments on the listserv come
up, and they are not bad, but they do not seem worth archiving. ;-) I
really enjoy the conversations I read here, and find many of them thought
provoking and interesting. However, I think of these posts as ongoing
conversations, not as something I'd want to refer to in a historical
record. I find it somewhat disturbing that they are archived.

One of the reasons that they are archived, Kathleen, is because they are very "keyword rich" -- lots of math words in there.  This helps The Math Forum come up high in the search engine results.
