> PS: Thank you Bill, for the time and effort you put into sunhelp.org. You're welcome! On this note, I'm looking for an older G4 system to run OSX 10.3 and 10.4 on (dual-boot) so that I can use it to reproduce and troubleshoot problems that people send into machelp.org (I answer 10-15 questions/day lately). If anybody has an older system they'd like to donate, let me know. Barebones is fine as long as it has video - I can dig up CDROM/HD/RAM. I'm the third result for a Google search of "mac help". 8-) I've only started really doing anything with it in the past couple of years. Last April I put up a "Have problems with your computer? Email questions@... and I'll try to help" blurb. Since then I've received more than 1500 emails of people asking for help; usually minor problems that are solved by spending 30 seconds on Google. I mostly do it just to help people. I use this .sig file when I'm able to provide a response to someone's question or problem: ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If my advice has been helpful, please consider purchasing an item on my Amazon Wish List located at http://wishlist.machelp.org. MacHELP does not make any income - I run the site as a hobby and answer between 5-15 emails a day from people who need help with their Apple products. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is mostly so I might get SOMETHING back from all the time I spend running SunHELP and MacHELP (at least an hour a day). So far people have bought me a scientific calculator, some bumper stickers, five books, and a magazine subscription. The profit-to-effort ratio ain't that great, but it's better than nothing (as I don't make money from Google anymore). list, which has a very high signal-to-noise ratio, because they outright reject any question that can be answered by reading manuals, surfing existing Apple & 3rd party support sites, and the like. So the problems that end up there tend to be really 'meaty' ones. <http://www.mac-mgrs.org> I've received really useful responses to the few problems I've posted there as well. They also have a cool get-together every year in San Francisco on the evening before Macworld Expo. Same policy (management questions only, nothing that can be answered/solved via Google or RTFM, no chatting or discussions, etc). http://www.sunmanagers.org/ I don't host it, though. I did for a couple of years, but now it runs on hardware up at the University of Toronto (where the creator of the list, John DiMarco, works). Over a gig a day of outgoing email was straining my poor little Ultra5 at the time. 8-) Man, I just realized that I have a habit of spreading myself almost to thin on all this "help people" stuff. 8-) BIll -- Bill Bradford Houston, Texas _______________________________________________ rescue list - http://www.sunhelp.org/mailman/listinfo/rescue |
