HI,

Would be grateful for some help please.

I've recently ripped about 500 discs to flac, following the instructions given on
jiGGafellz' Step-by-Step Guide to Secure CD Ripping. I made a cue file for each disc following the steps outlined in the tutorial, however, when I try to open a cue sheet using Burrrn I encounter the following error.

Error

---------------------------

Referenced file "D:\Flac files\Over The Hills\Lucy Kaplansky\Over The Hills\10. The Gift Lucy Kaplansky.wav" not found!

---------------------------

OK

This error occurs for all of the cue files, and always appears to be associated with the last track.

I shall include a sample cue sheet below, and would appreciate some help as I'm not familiar enough with the syntax to identify the problem.
Btw, Foobar 2k is also unable to open these cue files.

Many thanks,

Tim.

Long time EAC user, i'd like to say I'm an advanced user. However, I
recently installed v099pb4 and none of my two drives are listed in the
worked fine) and still no drive listed. I would list my specs here
but i don't believe thats the prob as none have changed from prev
>> The first thing to try is EAC's built-in burning engine. If you go
> to
>> "Eac options" dialog on the "Write" tab uncheck the "use CDRDAO..."
>> option. Restart EAC and see if it will work with your drive. If it
> does
>> then you won't have to worry about getting it to work with CDRDAO.

I have two guesses...

- I believe Windows Vista doesn't allow user data to be written to the
Program Files directory. Perhaps cdrdao.toc can't be written there, and
therefore can't be read. The solution to this kind of problem can be to
install the program somewhere else besides "Program Files", or to set
the program up to write it's data elsewhere, if possible.

- I notice there's a space in your file name, "cdrdao<space>.toc".
Maybe you have a typo in one of EAC's setup options?

Thanks for the reply.

I have been using EAC with this burner for about 15 months now. The Unhandled Exception error occurs infrequently but enough to be annoying. I don't have problems with any other ripping or burning programs such as CDex or Nero. I think my firmware is up to date.

I have changed the gap detection to Method A, accurate but this made no difference to the length of songs problem.

> Hi,

> I am using EAC v0.99 pb4 with Lame 3.90.3. My DVD burner is an LG
> GSA-H62N.

> On some CD's (very few but enough to be annoying), with the Native
> Win32 interface for Win NT/2000/XP selected I get the an Unhandled
> Exception at Native SCSI.504 -> INDEX RANGE. My DVD burner is not a
> SCSI device but is a SATA device. To cure this problem (to some
> extent) I installed the ASPI interface in the EAC directory.

Are you sure that EAC supports your burner? Do you get similar errors
when using other burner software like NERO etc?
Have you already tried to update the drive's firmware?

> Also, on some CD's the reported length of some songs is way out. This
> usually only affects 1 song title but can turn a 3 or 4 minute song
> into a 27 to 30 minute song (estimate only). Doing a gap detection
> does not help this.

Do you have the drive's gap detection mode set to A, accurate? If not it
may be worth to test this configuration. Gives the best results here
on various LG DVD writers.

Cheers
Have you tried creating your own mareo.ini file?
I did, and could not get it to work at all until I downloaded a newer
version (6b2) of Mareo.
You'll find a link to the download in this conversation:
If you still can't get it to work, repost here and I'll reply with Mareo.ini
contents that should work for you with that version.
>
> compress using --preset extreme to \mp3\[album]
> compress using flac at highest compression (-6 I think) to \flac\[album]
> delete wav
>
> I would like filenames to be %N %A - %T
> names on various artist CDs.

OK, I think I understand that. But how do you tell if a drive has
audio caching? Here's a typical spec from Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106228

All it says is that it has 2MB of cache. I don't remember ever
seeing any spec specify that the cache was anything other
than "cache".

I figure that the drives I've bought recently do have audio caching
since EAC said they did. Only the two oldest drives I have don't get
EAC to say thay - they are in W98 boxes I've had for over 10 years.
Newegg won't answer any questions at all. I've tried asking about
this from some other online retailer and the guy had no idea of what
I was talking about.

Thanks,

Conrad
> We are not talking about data caching. We're talking about audio
caching,
> which is something that you do not want a drive to do. (Do you
know of any
> drives which lack data caching?)
>
>
>
> There is no way to "disable caching" in EAC. All that you can do
is inform
> EAC that the drive caches audio data, in which case EAC will
attempt to read
> a large enough amount of data that the drive's cache no longer
contains the
> data when EAC goes back to do a re-read. That can result in far
slower
> ripping times for audio CDs and more wear and tear on the drive.
If you can
> find a drive that does not cache audio data, buy it.
>
>
>
> Given the plummeting cost of RAM, it's not inconceivable that a
company
> could produce a high-end drive which cached the entire audio CD in
RAM, in
> which case, EAC would be unable to function properly.
>
>However the problem as far as I can see is that Vista installs EAC in
>a folder called "C:\Programmes\Exact Audio Copy" and EAC looks for the

cdrdao.toc is a temporary file that EAC creates on-the-fly and passes to
cdrdao. It's a sort of cdrdao's own cue file format.

What's likely happening, is Vista's UAC is not allowing this file to be
written in a subdirectory of "Program Files," because EAC doesn't have
>> >>
>> >> A cdrdao.toc file is basically cdrdao's version of a cue file,
>> >> written on the fly by EAC. Something is stopping this file from
>> >being
>> >> created. Some people using Vista have found that running EAC in
>> >> administrator mode to have solved this problem.
>> >>
>> >> Administrator mode is an operating system function, and can be
>> >> click the advanced button and select run as administrator.
>> >
>> >Thanks that has got round that problem, it has stopped showing
> that
>> >error message when I try to write a cd. Unfortunately it doesnt
> seem
>> >to want to a cd yet, also its not letting me add files onto a new
> CUE
>> >sheet.
>> >
>> >When I set it to write from a saved cue file, with no test, the
> track
>> >meter fills up, the cd meter fills up and the status stays on
> Writing
>> >Lead-In, the remaianing time counts down, and nothing happens. It
>> >also wont allow me to cancel and I have to close the program with
>> >Task Manager which tells me that EAC is waiting for a response but
>> >hasnt given me any text box. Any ideas?
>>
>> The first thing to try is EAC's built-in burning engine. If you go
> to
>> "Eac options" dialog on the "Write" tab uncheck the "use CDRDAO..."
>> option. Restart EAC and see if it will work with your drive. If it
> does
>> then you won't have to worry about getting it to work with CDRDAO.
>>
>> Michael J. Russell
>> mrussell57@...
>>
>
> Thats got it, thanks to all who helped me with it!
>
> cheers

We are not talking about data caching. We’re talking about audio caching,
which is something that you do not want a drive to do. (Do you know of any
drives which lack data caching?)

There is no way to “disable caching” in EAC. All that you can do is inform
EAC that the drive caches audio data, in which case EAC will attempt to read
a large enough amount of data that the drive’s cache no longer contains the
data when EAC goes back to do a re-read. That can result in far slower
ripping times for audio CDs and more wear and tear on the drive. If you can
find a drive that does not cache audio data, buy it.

Given the plummeting cost of RAM, it’s not inconceivable that a company
could produce a high-end drive which cached the entire audio CD in RAM, in
which case, EAC would be unable to function properly.

You have to think that CD drives most of the time are used to read data
instead of musical CDs.
Cache is very useful to avoid continuous access to same sectors, that is
very common during data reading.
Drives that cache data are more and more lifelonger compared to ones who
don't.
This is because I STRONGLY recommend NOT to buy drives without data
caching. The only case should be a burner NEVER used for reading.
Ase you already now, caching is a problem when EAC reads in secure mode,
because of false matching response from cache instead of disk surface.
Simply disabling cache IN EAC following Zoltan correct advice solves any
problem.
 Subject: [eac] disk caching

I've been a bit confused about this for a while & have just been
trying to figure out the answer. I'd appreciate someone telling me
if this makes sense and correcting me.

While setting up EAC (VO 95 beta 4) on an XP system for a new drive
(Philips SPD 2413) I got, it told me that it couldn't give me
completely accurate rips because the disc was using caching. This is
because EAC, when double checking, reads what's in the cache rather
than reading the disc again to double check. It seems that this is
becoming more common. The last couple drives I've bought have had
caching and it's been difficult for me to determine if a drive has it
 before buying.

But, from reading stuff on the EAC site, it seems to me that newer
versions of EAC are able to get around this problem in the secure
mode. The site says, "In newer versions, it will overread sectors,
so that the cache contains sectors from a position elsewhere on the
CD." I don't really understand that. Does this mean that EAC no
longer fears the disc caching problem?

I asked about this a while back and someone told me to disable
 caching.

I haven't updated EAC because of the if it ain't broke principle but
I guess it (VO95) is broke. I'm going to install the latest EAC
version. But do I need to worry about disc caching when buying a new
drive (something I seem to have to do more often than I'd like)?

 Thanks,

>
> This is rather a quick treatment, but I hope it will serve.
>
> Remember, please, that the purpose is to find the best recording speed -
> the one with fewest errors. It is not to have a go/nogo decision on a
> specific recording.
>
> Scan Disc gives only very high-level information; any medium/speed
> combination which gives yellow blocks should be regarded as
> unacceptable. Even if the disc plays back well initially, it is likely
> to degrade more quickly than one which is 'clean'.
>
> Disc Quality is the real test - and here you are dependent on the
> properties of the drive. The inherent error rate of optical media is
> high, of the order of one bit in ten thousand. To deal with that, two
> layers of error correction apply in audio (and a third for data). C1
> errors are those which get through both layers; there should be none of
> those. C2 errors are caught in the first layer and will always be
> present. Clearly, the 'best' speed for any medium and drive is the one
> that has the fewest C2 errors. If your drive reports C2 errors, then
> that is the only measure you need.
>
> Unfortunately, few drives do report C2. Also unfortunately, it takes a
> pretty poorly recorded disc to have C1 errors - the ECC is quite strong.
> So the best information you can get is from looking at the line showing
> speed of reading. It should be smooth with no downward spikes - or at
> least few of them. Each of those shows re-reading to get correct
> information. The more and the deeper those spikes, the poorer the
> recording.
>
> Again unfortunately, most drives buffer the data before CDSpeed can read
> the results. In that case, there will be few spikes from which to make a
> judgement, but usually one can see at what speeds they become more
> numerous and split the difference. Thus, at 4x and 24x, there may be
> noticeably more spikes than between those two and optimum recording
> speed might be in the range of 8-12x.

what governs rip speed (or, does CPU have an effect)?

I've been using EAC on and off for years now, but I'm finally getting serious about ripping my entire 500+ CD connection to disk. I've been doing it on my four-year-old P4 machine at home, and with an HP 1040i drive, I've been getting speeds of about 2.0x in secure mode.

I decided to jumpstart the process by bringing a stack of CDs with me to work and running extractions in the background. I do have a faster PC at work (Core 2 duo), but it's just a commodity Dell desktop. I was very surprised to get consistent 6 - 8x extraction speeds.

I know my home desktop is getting on in years, but it works fine for me. I thought the drive was the main limiting factor in ripping speed. My HP drive does everything else faster than the no-name drive in my work machine. Does CPU speed have that much of an effect on ripping speed? On neither machine do I see much CPU activity in task manager.
From forum: Exact Audio Copy (EAC) - User
