Doesn't sound like a working system. Might want to start
with basic testing.

Download memtest86+ and create a CD from the .iso. Boot from
it and let it run for a few passes.

Test the hard drive. I use spinrite, which isn't free, but
drive makers give away diagnostic software.

Open the computer, and open the power supply. Check both the
motherboard and inside the power supply for bad caps as
shown here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague

(click on the photos to see closer)

Try changing the nics with other brands. Try other PCI
slots. Disable the onboard nic and substitute with a PCI
nic.

Try changing the ethernet cables and even try different
ports on the switch and dsl/cable connection.

And reinstall EFW, but don't restore the old backup to see
if you can get it to work...
>
> Hi,
>
> I have a PC set as Endian Firewall with this configuration
> - Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
> - 2GB RAM
> - eth0 (WAN) Realtek RTL-8139C
> - eth1 (LAN) Via Rhine.
> Before install Endian on this PC i had installed it on
> VMWare machine with
> few resources. Then when i had free PC i had installed
> Endian on this and
> restore the previus configuration and set as well.
> This 3 days before holidays!
> After holidays i have started to view serius networking
> problem:
> happen that the firewall do not responding by LAN, but
> responding to ping by
> LAN. Perhaps if i have established also a connection this
> cotinue to be up,
> For Ex.
> if have established a SSH connection by LAN to firewall,
> this session
> remains active, but it's impossible to establish another
> once.
> If have established a RDP connection by Internet to RDP
> Server behind
> Endian, this remains active, but i can't establish another
> once.
> I have red a post of somebody that has problem with
Realtek
> network card ...
> [..]
>
>> Does anybody have any suggestions? Will all those messages eventually
>> time-out, and if so how long? Do you believe this was some sort of Denial
>> of Service Attack?
>
> very interesting problem. since we never had the chance to see such a
> threat it is refreshingly to see that it does not really affect the rest
> ot the firewalls features.
>
> i believe you had an excessive dictionary attack, but to say exactly
> what happened i would need more information.
>
> however, a huge dictionary attack may produce this problems, since on
> the firewall there is no possibility to know whether a recipient email
> address is real or not, it must accept any email and forward it to the
> intern mail server, which is the only who can bounce the mail if the
> recipient does not exist.
> we thought about a solution by doing an ldap lookup for every recipient,
> but it slows down the entire mail proxy and hence you certainly need the
> ldap server. at the other hand, configuring each existing recipient
> address will lead you in an administration nightmare, since you need to
> configure all twice.
Hi,
POSTFIX_ADD_SMTPD_RECIPIENT_RESTRICTIONS=”reject_unverified_recipient”
at /etc/sysconfig/postfix
and
mydomain.com smtp:[IP of the internal server] at etc/postfix/transport
should do the job.

bye
Christoph
>
>
> in order to solve your problem, you may read this postfix readme:
>
> this explains pretty good what happens on the mail queues and how to
> check if a queue is "full" and which sender domains cause the problem.
>
> in short, log in and use the qshape tool, this way:
>
> qshape deferred
>
> it should give you a list with destination domains of emails which
> reside in the deferred queue, sorted by the number of emails for the
> respective domain.
>
> you may remove all mails from the deferred queue (of a specific
> recipient address) by using the postsuper command, which is described here:
>
> there is also an example how to remove mails of a specific recipient address
>
> or deleting the entire deferred queue:
>
> postsuper -d ALL deferred
>
>
> it would help us if you can report how you solved the problem, if you
> manage it to solve it following those documents.
> so we can easier imagine which future implementation could be useful in
> order to easily handle such problems, since i noticed that the flush
> queue button is insufficient.
>
>
>> Thanks so much for a great product... I can't believe how well the
>> firewall
>> held up, I didn't even notice any speed difference for http traffic through
>> the box, or accessing the administration pages on the box throughout the
>> "attack".
> [..]
>
> you're welcome! thank you for the compliments!
>
> The 8139C is 100baseT, and works fine. I don't know what
>
>

Realtek
> network card ...
> it's possible
other packages listed in the link below. Do not install

Maybe this could help you... I'm trying ipcop with urlfilter and adv proxy,
because Endian problems in 3 customers mine.
> I have a PC set as Endian Firewall with this configuration
> - Athlon 64 Processor 3000+
> - 2GB RAM
> - eth0 (WAN) Realtek RTL-8139C
> - eth1 (LAN) Via Rhine.
> Before install Endian on this PC i had installed it on VMWare machine with
> few resources. Then when i had free PC i had installed Endian on this and
> restore the previus configuration and set as well.
> This 3 days before holidays!
> After holidays i have started to view serius networking problem:
> happen that the firewall do not responding by LAN, but responding to ping
> by
> LAN. Perhaps if i have established also a connection this cotinue to be up,
> For Ex.
> if have established a SSH connection by LAN to firewall, this session
> Endian, this remains active, but i can't establish another once.
> Possible that only solution is change the network card? For me this is
> difficult becouse the firewall sites in other city.

Endian, this remains active, but i can't establish another
once.
I have red a post of somebody that has problem with Realtek
network card ...
it's possible
> Hi again,
>
> in EFW-HELP I found the following...
>
> You can assign multiple interfaces per zone. Multiple interfaces can
> be added by pressing Ctrl and clicking on the desired interfaces. The
> interfaces will then internally bridged together, so they have the
> same functionality like a switch.
>
> May this be "the" solution? Who has used this funktion?
>
> greetings

Maybe this could help you... I'm trying ipcop with urlfilter and adv proxy, because Endian problems in 3 customers mine.

When the final 2.2 release will be available, I try Endian again.

restore the previus configuration and set as well.
This 3 days before holidays!
After holidays i have started to view serius networking problem:
happen that the firewall do not responding by LAN, but responding to ping by
LAN. Perhaps if i have established also a connection this cotinue to be up,
For Ex.
if have established a SSH connection by LAN to firewall, this session
remains active, but it's impossible to establish another once.
If have established a RDP connection by Internet to RDP Server behind
Endian, this remains active, but i can't establish another once.
Possible that only solution is change the network card? For me this is
difficult becouse the firewall sites in other city.
